Chapter 509 Deceived Harshly
After Nathan left, Clara collapsed onto the bed, feeling utterly defeated.
Her eyes were unfocused, her face blank.
She sat there, motionless, for several minutes before pounding the bed with her fists in frustration.
Even then, the suffocating feeling in her chest didn't ease.
Clara gritted her teeth, unable to understand why the compatibility results were the same as before.
Both she and Nathan had sensed something was off. So why did the results come back unchanged?
She even began to suspect that Nathan was lying to her because he didn't want to donate his kidney.
But what reason would he have to deceive her? If he didn't want to donate, he could have just kept quiet about the discrepancies from the start.
Could it be that he was toying with her?
Did he find it amusing to put on this elaborate act just to humiliate and disappoint her?
The overwhelming mix of pain and anger in Clara's heart led her to think the worst of Nathan. But no matter how much she speculated, it couldn't undo the hurt she felt.
A surge of resentment and sarcasm welled up inside her, all pointing to the conclusion that Nathan never truly intended to save her.
Not just Nathan, but the entire Manners family too!
The Manners family, who outwardly seemed to treat her so well, didn't value her at all!
The more she thought about the endless search for a kidney donor with no results, the more her frustration and bitterness grew uncontrollably.
And just when she was at her most agitated, Ryan had the nerve to call her.
Seeing Ryan's name on her phone again, Clara didn't hesitate to hang up.
The feedback from a hung-up call is different from an unanswered one, so Ryan immediately realized Clara had deliberately ended the call.
"Clara dared to hang up on me?"
Ryan's face twisted with anger as he redialed, only to be met with another cold hang-up.
He called several more times, but Clara had no intention of answering.
Finally, under the watchful eyes of the police officers, he sent Clara a threatening text message, mentioning some photos.
He was confident that this threat would force Clara to comply.
But to Ryan's surprise, Clara didn't respond to his text.
When he tried calling again, he found that she had blocked him!
Furious, Ryan quickly opened his photo album.
To his shock, the photos he had taken were all gone!
Panic set in, but no matter how frantically he searched, the photos were nowhere to be found.
"Time's up, hand over your phone."
At that moment, a police officer demanded his phone.
Ryan, seething with rage, couldn't help but lash out, "Did you delete my photos? Did you?"
His sudden outburst startled the officer, who took a step back.
"What's your problem?" The officer, now wary, pulled out his baton and struck Ryan.
In an instant, Ryan was on the ground, the baton delivering a shock, and the phone was confiscated.
"Give it back! I have something to say! The drugs aren't mine, or Katniss's—they're Clara's! Clara made me frame Katniss!" Ryan shouted desperately as the officer started to leave.
The officer paused briefly but continued walking. Another officer entered and said, "Your lawyer is here. Do you want to see them?"
Ryan was taken aback. He didn't have a lawyer. He hadn't contacted anyone except Clara, so how could there be a lawyer? But with Clara unreachable, a lawyer was just what he needed.
"Yes! I want to see my lawyer!"
Soon, Ryan was brought to meet his lawyer. The man who entered was a middle-aged professional, carrying a briefcase. The officer introduced him as Ryan's lawyer.
But Ryan didn't recognize him. He had never seen this man before.
The man, wearing glasses, sat across from Ryan and said, "Mr. Martin, hello. I was hired by Ms. Manners to assist you."
"Clara?" Ryan shot up, leaning over the table, ready to punch the man if not for the table's width.
The officers beside him quickly restrained him, shaking their batons, "Sit down."
After the warning, Ryan sat back down, subdued.
"Do you have any grievances with Ms. Manners? Rest assured, Mr. Martin, I will prioritize your interests and defend you."
The man's calm smile showed no other emotion.
Ryan's brow furrowed deeply. After a long pause, he asked, "Are you sure?"
"Yes. But I need your full cooperation, detailing everything."
"Fine, I'll cooperate." Ryan, recalling how Clara had guided him to implicate Katniss, felt a chill of fear. His previous statements had dragged Katniss into the mess, almost sealing his fate.
"Sir, I need to speak with my client alone."
The man addressed the officers, who then left the room.
Noticing the lack of surveillance, the man smiled at Ryan. Ryan felt a shiver down his spine as the man began analyzing his situation. He expected a barrage of questions but was shocked by how much the man already knew. Even the details of how he had hired the thugs were known.
The more Ryan listened, the more terrified he became. He interrupted, "Are you sent by Clara?"
He couldn't believe it! He couldn't believe Clara knew so much. Even though the kidnapping of Katniss was done for Clara, she couldn't possibly know the specifics. He had never told her.
"Mr. Martin is a smart man." The man smiled, continuing despite Ryan's horrified expression, "I won't repeat the details; you know them well."
"What do I know?" Ryan was deeply unsettled.
The man said quietly, "You've avoided contacting your family, only reaching out to Clara. Do you think your family is unaware?"
Ryan's nerves tightened instantly.
"You!" He was now certain this man wasn't sent by Clara! He realized he had been deceived! Deceived thoroughly! The worst part was, he didn't know who was behind it all.
"Who are you?" Ryan demanded, glaring at the man, his teeth clenched.
