Chapter 458 Playing Dumb
Lucas wasn't surprised to hear that Clara was okay.
Elodie had already reassured him after seeing Clara.
Clara was back and mentioned that school was out for the day.
"Oh, and Clara bailed someone out this morning," the person said, noticing Lucas was lost in thought and pointing to the documents in his hand. "I looked into him for you. Take a look."
Lucas flipped through the pages and found the information on a man named Ryan.
Seeing the unfamiliar name, Lucas frowned but didn't ask further.
"You're not curious at all?" the person asked, noticing Lucas's expression.
Lucas frowned, "Clara has her own life. Even though I'm her brother, I can't control everything she does."
Hearing this, the person didn't press further and got up to leave.
Lucas quickly stopped him. "Dennis, I need another favor."
Dennis asked what Lucas needed. "What do you need me to do?"
"Keep an eye on Nathan. If he tries to contact the hospital for anything, let me know," Lucas said.
Having Dennis watch Nathan would be more efficient than doing it himself.
Dennis nodded quickly. "Sure, I'll keep an eye on him."
With that, Dennis left.
Alone in the room, Lucas reviewed Clara's activities again.
Then, he contacted Elodie and, upon learning that everyone was heading home, said he would join them in the evening.
But before heading home, he needed to contact Katniss.
After all, his main reason for coming to Starhaven was Dylan.
If Dylan could be safely released, their family could return to Luminous City together.
If Katniss agreed to treat Nathan, maybe Nathan would stop thinking about donating his kidney to Clara.
And he would endeavor to locate the source of the kidneys.
Lucas called Katniss again around noon.
"Who is it?" Katniss's voice was lazy and casual.
Lucas composed himself before speaking. "It's me."
"Who?"
Lucas could tell Katniss was playing dumb, but he had to swallow his pride.
"Lucas," Katniss seemed pleased by his discomfort and asked. "What do you want?"
"I want to talk about Dylan," Lucas said, feeling awkward and unsure of what to say next.
He had never used a pleading tone with Katniss before and didn't know how to start.
Katniss laughed. "I don't have time to talk."
Lucas was infuriated by her laughter.
Struggling to contain his anger, he heard her cold refusal, and his expression darkened.
"I won't take much of your time. I just want a chance to bail Dylan out."
Lucas quickly said everything he needed to, fearing Katniss would hang up on him again.
His words caught Katniss off guard.
"Dylan can't be bailed out? That's not my problem."
Dylan couldn't be bailed out?
But this situation seemed familiar.
Did Dylan offend someone?
Lucas's tone was already harsh. "Katniss, stop playing dumb. If it wasn't you, it was Maximilian. Who else could it be?"
Katniss was helpless. "It wasn't me, and Maximilian wouldn't do that. Think about it. Did Dylan offend someone else?"
She thought the Manners family was crazy, always coming to her with their problems.
After saying that, she lost interest in talking to Lucas and hung up.
Lucas listened to the busy tone, his expression complicated.
If Katniss said it wasn't them, then who could it be?
Lucas thought for a moment before heading straight to the police station.
He needed to find out if Dylan had offended someone else.
At the Starhaven Medical University cafeteria.
After hanging up, Katniss faced two curious pairs of eyes.
"Katniss, who was that?"
"Who dares to bother you? Need our help?"
"No need," Katniss quickly shook her head, seeing Scarlett and Tyler's eager expressions.
Ethan, sitting next to her, also chimed in. "Katniss can handle it. You two don't need to get involved."
Katniss nodded in agreement.
But just as she nodded, Ethan said, "Ryan was bailed out. Katniss, be careful."
Katniss was surprised Ethan would warn her about Ryan and asked, "How do you know he was released?"
Ethan hadn't been to school yesterday, so he shouldn't know about Ryan.
Unless Tyler told him.
She glanced at Tyler's surprised face and heard him say, "Ryan's out? I haven't heard anything."
He checked his phone as he spoke.
Ethan nodded. "Yeah, he was bailed out around ten this morning."
Tyler was astonished. "No way, how do you know that?"
Ethan's calm response was. "I had someone watching Clara."
"What?" Tyler was confused, not understanding why Ethan mentioned Clara.
He looked at Ethan for an explanation, but Ethan just gave him a lazy look, as if waiting for him to figure out something simple.
Tyler scratched his head in confusion.
Just as he was about to ask, Scarlett smacked his head. "Did you forget we saw Ryan with someone at the movies?"
Tyler suddenly understood.
Ryan was with Clara then.
