Chapter 385 Elodie Woke Up
Emma seemed to sense Maximilian's intention and quickly said, "Max, don't hang up. I need to talk to you about something important."
Maximilian didn't respond, just frowned while holding his phone.
Emma was the most shameless person he had ever encountered, and he certainly didn't like her repeated attempts to probe him.
If it weren't for her status as the heir to the Kate family, he would have lost his patience long ago.
"It's about my brother's funeral. I want to invite you, Max. You wouldn't refuse, would you?"
Maximilian's frown deepened. He had no desire to get involved with the Kate family, but they did hold a certain status in Starhaven.
Thinking about Emma's ulterior motives, Maximilian simply said, "I'll think about it."
Emma didn't push further, made a few jokes, and then hung up the phone.
Maximilian knew Emma Lucas's funeral was in three days, so there was no rush. He decided to take a break in the office lounge.
Meanwhile...
Katniss arrived in the Amber District, sent Maximilian a message to let him know she was safe, and then went to sleep.
It wasn't until late at night that she received a reply from Maximilian.
The next morning, she saw the time of his reply and guessed he had stayed up late dealing with matters.
Before heading to her test, she called him.
They didn't talk much, but both could sense each other's concern. After hanging up, both had a faint smile on their lips.
Katniss handed her phone to Conrad, took a deep breath, and entered the testing area with Ethan.
"Don't be nervous," Ethan noticed Katniss was tense and tried to comfort her.
She smiled at him, and they each went to their respective testing points.
Soon, Katniss received her research topic for the day.
She calmed herself and proceeded step by step, methodically. Only after completing the final step did she breathe a sigh of relief.
Elsewhere, Clara woke up early and went straight to find Desmond instead of going to school.
She knew where Desmond lived, but his appearance when he opened the door shocked her.
"Desmond, what happened to your face?"
Desmond hadn't expected Clara to be at the door, so he stood there stunned.
He wasn't wearing a mask because his face was too injured from the beating last night, making it unsuitable to cover or go out.
He had already taken a few days off from school to rest at home.
But he hadn't expected Clara to come looking for him.
Seeing no response from Desmond, Clara asked again, "Desmond, what happened to you?"
Realizing he couldn't hide it anymore, Desmond pulled her inside.
"Clara, don't worry. I'll explain everything."
Though he said he'd explain slowly, he was very anxious and didn't know where to start.
Seeing Clara's concerned eyes, he felt a pang of guilt.
"Desmond, take your time," Clara said, her voice choked with emotion, tears welling up in her eyes.
Desmond thought of Emma, that despicable woman, and told Clara about the events of last night, though he left out details about Dione and Violette.
Clara, upon hearing Desmond had been beaten at a bar, suddenly asked, "Desmond, what were you doing at a bar?"
Desmond hadn't mentioned Dione and Hutch before, and now he felt awkward about whether to bring it up.
Clara noticed his discomfort and quickly said, "Desmond, if you don't want to talk about it, you don't have to."
"I'm sorry, Clara, but please know that my heart is only for you!" Desmond didn't explain further.
He needed to keep Dione on his side to help him find a kidney donor.
After returning home last night, he told Gabriel that his meeting with Dione went well and that Dione seemed to accept him.
Gabriel was pleased with his tactfulness, and Desmond took advantage of Gabriel's good mood to subtly mention he had a friend needing a kidney transplant, asking Gabriel to keep an eye out.
Fortunately, Gabriel, in his good mood, didn't scold him and casually agreed.
Though the agreement was offhand, Desmond knew Gabriel would have someone look into it.
Clara frowned upon hearing Desmond's words.
She had undergone several tests at the hospital yesterday. Though she didn't feel unwell, she was deeply uneasy.
Seeing Desmond in this state only heightened her anxiety.
Just as she was about to say something, Dylan called.
"Clara! Mom woke up."
Dylan's joyful voice came through the phone.
Elodie woke up!
Clara was instantly overwhelmed with joy, "Really?"
Desmond, hearing Dylan's words, was more surprised than joyful.
Clara, eager to get to the hospital, said, "Desmond, I need to go see my mom," and hurried out.
Desmond, considering his current state, suppressed his desire to accompany Clara and said, "Clara, I'll visit Ms. Smith another day."
Clara knew Desmond couldn't go out looking like this, so she quickly reassured him, "Desmond, you rest at home. I'll go see my mom and then come back to take care of you."
She said this casually, knowing Desmond would likely refuse.
As expected, Desmond replied, "We'll talk about it later. You go see Ms. Smith first."
He then saw Clara out the door.
Meanwhile, downstairs at Maximilian's company.
Emma, accompanied by several people, entered the building and headed straight for the elevator.
"Miss, who are you here to see?" The receptionist quickly came out to stop her.
Emma's bodyguards blocked the receptionist, prompting the company's security to intervene.
As the bodyguards prepared to force their way through, Emma clapped her hands, signaling them to stop, and said leisurely, "I'm here to see Mr. Hamilton."
With security by her side, the receptionist gathered some courage and asked, "Do you have an appointment, Miss?"
"Appointment?" Emma chuckled, "I never need an appointment to see someone."
She then signaled her bodyguards, who moved forward, while the others engaged the security.
Seeing the commotion, the receptionist quickly said, "Miss, please have your people calm down. I'll call Mr. Hamilton for you."
Emma smirked, signaling her bodyguards to stop, and said, "Tell Mr. Hamilton that Emma is here."
If she hadn't been unable to reach Maximilian by phone, she wouldn't have resorted to this method.
She was impatient and disliked waiting.
