Chapter 495 A Fool and a Waste
Seeing the man drenched in cold sweat, his face pale as if he was about to faint, Emma shot him a glare.
"If you're gonna die, do it somewhere else. Don't show that face in front of me."
The man flinched and quickly tried to pull himself together.
He stammered, "Ms. Kate, Ryan messed things up. Should we still mess with Katniss's scores?"
He had previously suggested manipulating Katniss's scores but hadn't received a clear response from Emma. Now, he had no choice but to ask again, as he couldn't think of any other solution.
When Emma first learned that Katniss was undergoing training and was eager to advance to the next round, she had ordered them to ensure Katniss wouldn't get her wish.
So, when Ryan took a group to intercept Katniss today, the plan was originally to kidnap her and keep her locked up for half a day, making her miss the exam.
He had sent Ryan to do this, confident that it would be foolproof. If Katniss missed the exam, she couldn't advance to the next round.
But Ryan would surely face retaliation from Katniss and Maximilian.
Emma had even praised him for this clever plan when he told her about it, and he had felt quite proud.
But who could have guessed that Ryan would mess up such a simple task?
Ryan was an idiot, a complete failure!
The more he thought about it, the angrier he got, especially after hearing Emma's words. He felt that Emma's disdain for him was all Ryan's fault.
Emma said, "It's just a score. Do you expect me to personally intervene and change it?"
As the future heir of the Kate family, she could easily influence many things with just a word. But in her original plan, she hadn't intended to leave any trace of her involvement.
The man was almost on his knees, his tone humble and sincere as he apologized, "Ms. Kate, this is my fault for misjudging people."
Emma stared at him irritably, waiting to see what he would say.
The more he spoke, the lower he bowed his head, and his voice grew quieter.
Suddenly, he thought of something and quickly said, "Ms. Kate, although Ryan was foolish this time, the other side wasn't completely unprepared. That's why Ryan couldn't delay them at all."
After all, Katniss not only didn't miss the exam but also arrived early.
Ryan's failure was beyond ordinary.
"Prepared?" Emma's cold eyes narrowed. "Are you saying someone leaked information, and they knew in advance?"
Hearing Emma's guess, the man hesitated but nodded slightly.
Emma snorted, "Evidence? Or are you just guessing?"
Her subordinates were all from the Kate family. Since they came under her command, she knew they wouldn't dare do anything against her, but she couldn't prevent some from being two-faced.
Emma was usually arrogant and treated her subordinates based on her whims, not caring much about their opinions of her.
Now, her sarcastic tone showed her growing displeasure.
The man quickly denied, his voice trembling, "Ms. Kate, it's not a guess. It's likely the truth."
After saying this, he hesitated, afraid Emma wouldn't notice his hesitation, so he sneaked a few glances at her.
Emma crossed her legs and kicked him lightly with her toe, snapping, "Spit it out."
The man finally spoke as if facing death, "Ms. Kate, this time Katniss went to the Amber District for the exam, and unlike last time, she had Maximilian with her. They also brought more bodyguards, so Ryan couldn't even delay her."
Otherwise, the dozen men he sent with Ryan could have easily handled Katniss's usual bodyguards.
"Maximilian? He went to the Amber District, too?"
Hearing that Maximilian had accompanied Katniss to the Amber District, Emma's already unpleasant expression turned even darker.
The man didn't dare say a word, only nodding vigorously.
Emma's current state terrified him. He feared that one wrong word would lead to a beating from Emma's other subordinates.
They had all learned Emma's temper since she returned to the country.
When Emma was annoyed, they knew to play dumb and blind.
Seeing him nod, Emma angrily kicked over a small ottoman nearby.
The round ottoman rolled a bit before stopping, and Emma spoke again.
"Fine, use my name to handle it. As soon as the scores are out, make sure they get changed. Don't let Katniss get smug!"
Just thinking about Katniss taking the exam in the Amber District, with Maximilian accompanying her for just a few days, made Emma furious.
After all, she had specifically requested a project from the Kate family to collaborate with Maximilian's company, scheduling the meeting for today and tomorrow.
She had even demanded that Maximilian be present for the collaboration talks.
But now, Maximilian had gone to the Amber District with Katniss! This infuriated her!
Maximilian's actions meant he was giving up on the collaboration.
She was offering benefits to Maximilian, and he didn't even want them! Emma couldn't understand what spell Katniss had cast on Maximilian.
Did Katniss know that Maximilian had given up a hugely beneficial project for his company just to accompany her?
If Katniss knew, she would probably be very pleased with herself.
The thought of Katniss being smug made Emma even more frustrated.
"Why are you still here? Go handle it! Don't let Katniss get smug!"
Hearing Emma's urgency, the man scrambled to his feet, "Yes, Ms. Kate, I'll personally oversee it and change the scores as soon as they're out!"
"Make it a zero!" Emma was fuming.
The man's face stiffened, his steps faltered, and his lips moved as if he wanted to say something but didn't dare.
Emma, still angry, didn't notice his hesitation. Seeing he hadn't left, she snapped, "Why are you still here? Go!"
Finally, the man lowered his head and said, "Ms. Kate, their scores aren't numerical, just different grades. Should we mark Katniss as failed?"
Emma felt like her subordinate was as useless as Ryan.
She glared at him and rolled her eyes, "Stop wasting time! Just make sure she can't advance to the next round. Now go!"
