Chapter 504 Allies of the Same Camp
The two of them didn't say much outside before heading back to the room.
Inside, Clara was on the verge of a nervous breakdown, even though she hadn't been waiting long.
She kept replaying the conversation in her head, wondering if she had said something wrong or if she had been too hasty.
Maybe she shouldn't have mentioned Katniss directly.
When Clara saw them come in, she tensed up, almost standing up in a rush.
The two seemed oblivious to her anxiety, calmly sitting across from her.
"Can I see Mr. Martin now?" Clara asked, trying to keep her voice steady since they didn't seem inclined to speak first.
Clara was worried that the earlier incident might affect her meeting with Ryan, and even more worried that she wouldn't be able to complete the task Emma had given her.
Emma still had the negatives of those photos, and Clara didn't dare challenge her authority.
Thinking about how she could return to Luminous City according to Desmond's plan once she completed Emma's task, Clara was eager to get it over with.
"Yeah, sure."
Clara breathed a sigh of relief at their response.
Soon, Clara was brought to see Ryan.
The two who escorted her left immediately, giving Clara and Ryan some privacy.
But Clara glanced at the corner of the room and, sure enough, saw a surveillance camera.
Cameras weren't widespread yet, but the police station had a few installed.
The place where Clara and Ryan met was not only separated by iron bars but also monitored by a camera.
Ryan looked terrible, with red eyes. As soon as he saw Clara, he rushed to the bars, gripping them tightly and leaning as close to her as possible.
"Clara! You finally came!"
Ryan's emotions surged the moment he saw Clara. He had been waiting so long that he had begged the police to urge Clara to come again.
He had started to think Clara wasn't going to show up.
Ryan had even been counting down in his head, ready to spill everything about Clara if she didn't come.
If he was going down, he wasn't going alone!
Luckily, he hadn't sold Clara out yet, or she might really not have come.
Clara took a small step back, her face calm despite her inner disdain, and asked directly, "Ryan, did you call me here to bail you out?"
Ryan immediately sensed something was off.
But looking at Clara's face, he couldn't pinpoint what it was.
"Yeah! Of course, I need you to bail me out." Ryan couldn't afford to think about anything else; he clung to Clara as his lifeline.
After all, he had done everything against Katniss under Clara's orders!
He had been helping Clara all along!
In a way, they were allies.
Seeing Ryan's urgency, Clara remained composed and said, "But Ryan, your situation is different this time. You know, getting involved with those things makes it hard to get out."
Though she spoke vaguely, Ryan understood perfectly.
Sure enough, at the mention of "those things," Ryan became agitated again.
"Clara, I didn't touch them! I'm being framed." Ryan still couldn't understand why his fingerprints were on that bag, feeling both wronged and panicked.
Clara sighed, "Ryan, telling me won't help. You need to tell the police and clear your name before I can bail you out."
Ryan had already told the police everything, but it hadn't helped at all.
"What am I supposed to say? I don't know what to say." Ryan couldn't help but hit his head in frustration, like a trapped beast.
This was exactly what Clara was waiting for. She quickly said, "Ryan, let me ask, and you answer."
Ryan was stunned for a moment but quickly nodded.
Seeing no objection from him, Clara relaxed a bit and began asking questions.
At first, Clara asked relatively unimportant questions, each filled with hints, even casually mentioning she had plans to go shopping with the Anderson family later.
Ryan, confused by the questions, suddenly remembered Clara's connection to the Anderson family.
If he followed Clara's lead, could she get him out?
With this thought, Ryan answered Clara's leading questions, hoping she could use her connection to the Anderson family to bail him out.
If Clara couldn't get him out, he would ruin her reputation!
He still had dirt on Clara!
Thinking about the leverage he had over Clara, Ryan became even more cooperative.
Clara, pleased with Ryan's cooperation, smoothly shifted the topic to the drugs.
"Were the drugs the police found in your car given to you by Katniss?"
Ryan hesitated but quickly responded.
"Yeah."
Clara felt a surge of joy inside but remained outwardly calm, confirming once more, "Are you sure?"
"Yeah. The drugs were from Katniss." Ryan said through gritted teeth, anger rising, "Are you done yet? I've told you I'm innocent! Hurry up and get me out of here!"
After admitting the drugs came from Katniss, Ryan felt a pang of regret.
He had never admitted any connection to the drugs before, but now he had followed Clara's lead and confessed.
It was almost like admitting he was involved with the drugs.
He felt uneasy but still hoped Clara could use the Anderson family's influence to get him out quickly.
Clara, instead of being angry at Ryan's outburst, felt a sense of satisfaction.
Ryan had admitted that the drugs came from Katniss!
She had completed Emma's task and successfully implicated Katniss in the drug case.
Whether Katniss would be convicted or not, Clara felt immensely pleased at that moment.
Feeling so pleased, even Ryan's angry expression seemed more tolerable.
For once, she spoke to comfort Ryan:
"Ryan, don't be angry. It's good to clear things up. Since the drugs aren't yours, I'll explain to the police and do my best to bail you out!"
