Chapter 456 She Does Not Allow
When Ryan heard that Katniss was heading to the Amber District for a test, he immediately wanted to know the exact location.
Clara had already done her homework, so she answered without hesitation.
Ryan's curiosity was piqued even more.
Clara continued to coax him, "She won't be able to take many people with her for the test, probably just three like last time. Mr. Martin, if you bring a few more people than last time or catch her off guard, you can capture her."
Clara's words were light and easy, and Ryan found himself imagining the scenario.
Last time, when he tried to intercept Katniss, it might have been just for profit.
But now, the thought of going after Katniss again made him want to avenge his previous failure.
The last attempt was too embarrassing. If there was another chance, Ryan wanted to redeem himself.
And Clara was right; he was quite familiar with the Amber District.
The area Clara mentioned was not unfamiliar to him.
Seeing Ryan remain silent, Clara used a taunting tactic.
"Mr. Martin, are you going to let the last defeat slide? If it were me, I'd make sure Katniss pays."
Hearing Clara's words, Ryan slammed the table, "No way! Not only will I capture her, but I'll do it before her test, making her trip a waste!"
His words were firm, and Clara was very pleased.
Emma's people were also thinking about ruining Katniss's test.
Emma was leisurely listening to her subordinates' reports at home when one of them mentioned that Katniss had a test.
"A test? What test?" Emma asked, puzzled.
What did Katniss's test have to do with her?
Her subordinate was momentarily stunned but quickly explained, "Ms. Kate, you previously instructed us to make sure Katniss doesn't advance to the next round."
Hearing the explanation, Emma understood why Katniss was being brought up now.
However, she genuinely couldn't remember when she had given such an order.
But it was something that could continue.
"So, how are the arrangements?" Emma asked lazily, playing with her fingers, looking slightly bored.
She was indeed bored.
Her mind was on Maximilian, but he wasn't giving her any chances, so she had to wait for Clara to lure Desmond to Starhaven.
Clara had worked all morning and only got a vague promise that Desmond would come to Starhaven to pick her up, with no specific time.
She had considered going to Luminous City to capture him, but the Kate family members were being strict, claiming there were issues within the family.
They wouldn't let her or her people leave Starhaven during this time.
"The arrangements are almost complete, absolutely foolproof."
"Foolproof? Katniss won't get hurt, right?" Emma asked.
She didn't plan to injure Katniss at this time; otherwise, how could she compete with her?
"No, absolutely not!" the subordinate assured.
Seeing his confidence, Emma didn't bother asking for details.
She only cared about the result.
After making love with Ryan, Clara tried to figure out the password to his phone.
In the end, she left disappointed.
After leaving, Clara planned to go to the hospital to test and persuade Nathan.
Returning to Luminous City was her backup plan, and taking Nathan with her was her lifeline.
Emma's people were still following her, and Clara couldn't get her phone back unless she contacted Desmond or he called her.
When Clara went to the police station, she took a cab, with Emma's people tailing her in their car.
When she went to Ryan's house, they followed her there too.
Now, Clara had had enough of the cat-and-mouse game and approached the two men.
"Gentlemen, I need to go to Serenity Health Institute. Why don't you give me a ride?" she said, flashing a confident smile.
The two men exchanged glances before one of them said, "Get in."
Clara climbed into the car, smiling.
"Gentlemen, since I'm in the car now, can I use my phone for a bit?" she asked, hoping to push her luck.
The men ignored her, one of them saying, "You'll get your phone when Desmond calls."
Clara didn't push further.
When they arrived at the hospital, she spotted Elodie handling some paperwork.
"Mom," Clara called out.
Elodie looked up, surprised to see Clara.
She quickly walked over.
"Clara? Aren't you supposed to be in class?"
Clara remembered she was being watched by Emma's people and was skipping class, so she quickly covered, "Mom, we have a day off today. Otherwise, I wouldn't have gone to a friend's house yesterday."
Elodie didn't question further and continued with the paperwork.
Clara glanced down and saw that Elodie was handling Nathan's discharge papers.
"Mom?" Clara asked, puzzled, "Nathan's not fully recovered. How can he be discharged?"
Elodie seemed to remember something and stopped, not answering Clara's question but instead asking her own.
"By the way, Clara, why didn't you answer your phone earlier? When I called, you were always on another call. Who were you talking to?"
Elodie's questions left Clara momentarily stunned.
But she quickly realized Elodie had called her earlier.
She had been contacting Desmond, and after talking to him, Emma's people had taken her phone. They wouldn't let her answer other calls.
Clara thought for a moment and said, "I was talking to Desmond."
She knew Elodie didn't like Desmond, so mentioning him would likely stop further questions.
Sure enough, Elodie frowned at the mention of Desmond.
Desmond had previously suggested that Clara and Nathan be tested for compatibility and had secretly done the tests.
The successful match made Elodie feel disgusted.
What upset Elodie more was that Desmond wanted Nathan to donate a kidney to Clara.
She wouldn't allow it.
She wouldn't let anyone target Nathan.
"Desmond is up to no good! Clara, you should avoid him," Elodie warned, frowning.
Clara nodded obediently and helped Elodie with the discharge paperwork.
However, her health wasn't great, and the hospital lobby was crowded.
After a short while, she felt short of breath and couldn't continue.
Seeing Clara's condition, Elodie quickly helped her to a seat.
"Clara, are you okay? Where do you feel unwell?" Elodie asked, concerned.
Clara shook her head, "I'm fine, Mom. I just need to rest for a bit."
Elodie didn't feel comfortable leaving her alone and sat beside her.
Clara leaned on her and asked, "Mom, why did you suddenly agree to discharge Nathan? Isn't he still sick?"
Elodie sighed and hesitated, "Nathan insisted on being discharged. He said he wanted to see the sights of Starhaven. And Lucas also persuaded me."
Elodie felt helpless about Lucas's stance.
If Lucas hadn't persuaded her, she wouldn't have agreed to discharge Nathan.
