Chapter 386 We Are Very Happy Together
Emma waited for just half a minute before the receptionist hung up the internal line and said, "Ms. Kate, Mr. Hamilton's in a meeting, but Mr. Peterson will be down shortly."
The receptionist glanced at Emma, who stood there, expressionless, waiting.
Chris came down quickly.
It wasn't Maximilian who came down, but Chris, because Maximilian was busy dealing with Yasmin, who had just arrived at the company.
When Chris reached the lobby, he could sense something was off despite Emma's attempt to keep her cool.
"Ms. Kate, are you here to see Mr. Hamilton?" Chris immediately noticed Emma surrounded by bodyguards and asked.
"Who are you?" Emma's tone was icy towards anyone other than Maximilian.
Chris didn't take offense and introduced himself politely.
Upon learning that Chris was a friend of Maximilian, Emma skipped the small talk and asked, "Can I go up now?"
Chris, not one for unnecessary words, smiled and said, "Sure, Ms. Kate. But your bodyguards..."
Before he could finish, Emma cut him off, "They'll wait downstairs."
She was here for a private conversation with Maximilian and had no intention of bringing her bodyguards along.
Chris breathed a slight sigh of relief and gestured for her to follow.
However, the bodyguards behind Emma were uneasy about letting her go up alone, worried about her safety.
Emma, not one to tolerate defiance, shot them a look. "Stay here!"
Receiving her command, they lowered their heads and stood like statues near the reception.
The receptionist looked nervously at the bodyguards, but Chris gave her a reassuring smile before leading Emma to the elevator.
Emma was taken to a meeting room, and after seating her, Chris said, "Please wait here, Ms. Kate. Mr. Hamilton will be with you after his meeting."
He then arranged for coffee and snacks to be brought in, ensuring everything was in order.
Emma frowned, uninterested in the refreshments, and asked, "How long will it take?"
Chris, considering Emma's status and knowing Maximilian was meeting with Yasmin, hesitated before asking, "If you're in a hurry, Ms. Kate, I can go and check for you."
Emma, of course, told him to hurry.
Within a few minutes, Maximilian arrived.
As soon as she saw him, Emma stood up, "Mr. Hamilton."
Chris, following behind Maximilian, noticed a stark difference in Emma's demeanor from their previous encounter.
Even her previously cold voice had turned sweet, making Chris wonder if he was hearing things.
He looked at Emma suspiciously.
Emma glanced at him and rolled her eyes.
Maximilian spoke coolly, "Ms. Kate, what brings you here?"
Before coming in, Chris had already informed Maximilian about Emma's arrival and the scuffle with the company's security.
Emma was the newly returned heir of the Kate family, and her grand entrance at his company was anything but simple.
"Can't I come without a reason?"
Maximilian frowned, his expression darkening, and his words were blunt. "Ms. Kate seems to enjoy talking nonsense."
Last night, she had called him out of the blue, starting with some inexplicable small talk.
His words made Emma frown as well, but she suddenly smiled, "Yes, I do."
Though she said that, Emma couldn't help but think, 'I was flirting, not talking nonsense.'
Chris, however, picked up on Emma's interest in Maximilian.
He had heard about last night's events from Patrick and thought Patrick was joking, but now he realized Emma was serious about Maximilian.
"If Ms. Kate has no important business, we should get back to work," Maximilian said, ready to leave.
Emma quickly interjected, "I do have important business, but it's only for you."
Since Chris had followed Maximilian in, she hadn't said a word without him giving her a strange look.
She didn't want an audience and asked Chris to leave.
"Mr. Hamilton, I'll attend to other matters," Chris said, leaving decisively before Maximilian could respond.
Maximilian's straightforward departure surprised Emma.
But what surprised her more was Maximilian saying, "If Ms. Kate has important business, let's discuss it in my office."
He suspected Emma had nothing serious to say and headed straight to his office.
Emma followed him, puzzled, and once inside, Maximilian told her to make herself comfortable before sitting down to read his documents.
"Mr. Hamilton, your office is quite nice," Emma commented, not feeling bored but rather evaluating his office.
Maximilian responded absentmindedly.
"Aren't you curious about why I'm here?" Emma asked.
Maximilian, suspecting she had nothing good to say, wasn't interested.
"Not really."
Emma didn't mind his cold attitude and continued, "I'm here because I missed you."
Maximilian's expression turned colder, disapproving of her words, "Ms. Kate, we're not that close."
Emma, enjoying his distant demeanor, laughed boldly, "Why not? I like you. If you want, we can get married today."
Maximilian felt a surge of disgust and responded icily, "Ms. Kate, please have some respect. I'm already married."
"Married? Where is she? I haven't seen her."
Emma's fearless attitude masked her inner resentment. She knew about Maximilian's wife.
Last night, Maximilian had mentioned his wife before leaving. Emma, intrigued by him, had investigated and confirmed he had a wife.
A woman she could easily deal with.
But she hadn't planned to target the wife yet.
She wanted Maximilian to handle it himself.
So, with a confident smile, Emma said, "You could always get a divorce."
Her brazen suggestion made Maximilian's gaze turn icy.
"My wife and I are very happy together. We won't divorce."
Emma felt a chill under Maximilian's intense stare, momentarily intimidated.
"If you have nothing else to discuss, please leave," Maximilian said bluntly, his tone unyielding.
Emma narrowed her eyes, her expression unreadable, "We'll see about that."
With that, she left before Maximilian could show her out.
Her mood was noticeably worse as she descended, and her bodyguards didn't dare make a sound when they saw her.
Upstairs, after Emma left, Maximilian called Katniss.
Conrad answered, informing him that Katniss was still in a test.
Hearing this, Maximilian felt somewhat relieved. He asked when the test would end the next day and then hung up.
Rubbing his temples, he couldn't shake the feeling that Emma's trouble would affect Katniss, making him worry.
