Chapter 398 No Will to Survive
Dylan didn't answer Clara's question right away.
He bent down to whisper something to Elodie, then pulled Clara aside. "Clara, you need to stay away from Desmond."
Clara's heart sank.
She had a feeling this was about Desmond. She looked down and asked, "Why?"
Dylan sighed. "Clara, he's been secretly seeing women from Starhaven."
Clara replied, "Dylan, I know."
She had known from the start that Desmond's dates were set up by Gabriel, not something Desmond wanted.
Desmond had also explained to her that he was asking Gabriel to find a kidney donor, so when Desmond got beaten up last time, it was almost because of her.
How could she possibly avoid Desmond?
Dylan was taken aback and fell silent.
Just as he was about to speak, he saw a doctor coming out of the emergency room.
Clara saw the doctor too. She didn't want to continue the conversation with Dylan, so she quickly ran over.
"Doctor, how is Nathan?" she asked urgently.
The doctor replied, "He's out of immediate danger, but he really can't keep going like this."
Dylan walked over and heard this too.
"We understand, Hugo," he said.
The doctor glanced at them and left.
Elodie let out a heavy sigh of relief and then told Dylan about how they had asked Katniss for treatment but were coldly rejected.
"Katniss is trying to kill Nathan!" Elodie said, tears welling up.
Dylan sighed deeply. "If she won't treat him, there's nothing we can do. Mom, don't cry. We still need to see Nathan."
Elodie sobbed for a while longer.
When Nathan was wheeled out of the emergency room, she followed alongside him, pushed by Dylan and Clara.
At that moment, Hugo walked up to Dylan and whispered something.
Dylan looked up at him, and Hugo said, "Let's talk in the office."
Realizing it was about Clara's kidney donor, Dylan quickly followed Hugo.
Soon, they were in Hugo's office.
Dylan couldn't hide his excitement. "Hugo, did you find a suitable kidney donor?"
Hugo shook his head.
Dylan's excitement turned to visible disappointment.
"Then why did you say that?" he asked, feeling dejected.
He had thought Hugo's whisper was about Clara's kidney donor.
Hugo sighed and hesitated before speaking, "This isn't my place to say, but..."
Dylan pressed, "Why did you use the kidney donor to get me here?"
Hugo didn't answer immediately.
After a pause, he said, "Let's not talk about that now. Do you know Nathan's current condition?"
Dylan was confused.
Why was Nathan being brought up suddenly?
Seeing his confusion, Hugo continued, "If Nathan goes back into the emergency room, he likely won't make it."
"What do you mean?" Dylan felt a sense of dread.
Hugo sighed again. "Nathan suggested the kidney transplant."
Dylan immediately understood.
He stepped back, feeling unsettled. "Are you saying Nathan wants to donate his kidney to Clara?"
And it was Nathan's idea?
His health was already so poor; he wouldn't survive donating a kidney.
Did he have no will to live at all?
Dylan felt a wave of darkness wash over him.
Seeing Hugo nod, Dylan felt his breath catch.
But thinking about how a kidney transplant could save Clara and Nathan's dire condition, he hesitated before asking, "Can it be used?"
"Not necessarily. We need to do a compatibility test first. If it's compatible, then we can proceed," Hugo said. "You should do the test."
Hearing that a compatibility test was needed, Dylan let out a sigh of relief. "I'll consider it."
After talking to Hugo, Dylan left the office feeling lost.
He went to see Nathan, who was awake and talking to Clara.
Dylan instinctively walked over quickly.
Hearing they weren't discussing the kidney transplant, he relaxed a bit.
Elodie noticed Dylan's troubled expression and asked anxiously, "Dylan, what did Hugo say? How is Nathan?"
Her question made Clara and Nathan stop talking and look at him nervously.
Dylan felt a headache coming on. "I'll go talk to Katniss again."
Hugo had even mentioned the kidney donation, indicating Nathan was in critical condition, but Dylan couldn't bring himself to say this in front of everyone.
If he had to say it, it would be in private.
Hearing this, no one pressed further.
Nathan smiled at Dylan and said, "Dylan, Katniss probably won't change her mind."
Dylan felt uncomfortable. "Take care of yourself. I'll be back."
With that, he left the room.
He tried calling Katniss again, but still couldn't get through.
He decided to look up Scarlett's contact information from the hospital records and called her.
Katniss had visited Scarlett at the hospital before, and Dylan had noted their connection.
Now he could use Scarlett to reach Katniss.
"Who's this?" Scarlett answered, seeing the unlisted number.
Dylan, worried Scarlett might hang up if she knew who he was, didn't introduce himself directly. "Ms. Lewis, I'm trying to reach Katniss."
Scarlett, hearing Katniss's name but no introduction, didn't hold back. "Who are you?"
Dylan hesitated, unsure whether to reveal his identity.
While he was hesitating, Scarlett hung up.
Scarlett was having dinner with Sophia and Brynn.
After hanging up, she complained, "I don't know who it was, calling me to reach Katniss."
Sophia said, "If he didn't say who he was, he must be suspicious."
Brynn thought for a moment and said, "If he didn't contact Katniss directly but called you, Katniss probably doesn't want to talk to him."
Scarlett agreed. "Let's ignore him."
Just then, the phone rang again.
It was the same number.
Scarlett pointed at the phone and said to the others, "It's the same person."
Brynn reached out. "Let me ask who it is."
Scarlett handed her the phone.
Brynn answered, mimicking Katniss's voice. "What do you want?"
Dylan was stunned, then delighted.
He hadn't expected Scarlett to be with Katniss.
First Scarlett answered, now Katniss.
Sophia and Scarlett watched Brynn in surprise, not expecting her to mimic someone else's voice.
