Chapter 351 Didn't Expect You Two to Progress So Fast
"Yeah," Clara said, her voice a mix of excitement and shyness. "So Ethan didn't know?"
Hearing Ethan's question, Clara immediately realized that Katniss hadn't mentioned her to Ethan.
She felt a wave of relief, but also became more determined to get Katniss away from Ethan.
Even though Katniss hadn't dared to say much before, there was always a chance she might slip up!
She couldn't let someone as dangerous as Katniss stay around Ethan, and she definitely couldn't stand to see Katniss living a good life.
"I didn't know, but it's okay. I'll find out eventually," Ethan said, frowning as if he felt he was missing something.
Clara noticed Ethan's furrowed brow and felt a bad premonition.
She sensed that Ethan's reaction was off.
And with him saying he'd find out later, she grew even more uneasy.
Just as Clara was feeling anxious, Ethan suddenly asked, "What's this about you leaving the Manners family that Katniss mentioned?"
He wanted to hear Clara's side first before verifying or investigating further.
Subconsciously, he didn't want to ask too many questions of others, so apart from the few questions he asked Katniss that morning, he hadn't pried much.
But just now, when he saw Katniss and Clara downstairs, he sensed some tension between them, which made him decide to ask Clara first.
Clara bit her lip and looked at Ethan with teary eyes. "It's like this, I was taken to the Manners family by mistake, which is why Katniss mentioned me leaving the Manners family."
As she spoke, she hinted that she was unhappy in both the Manners and Baker families, implying that Katniss bullied her, trying to prepare Ethan for the worst.
Ethan listened to her with a frown, not interrupting, lost in his thoughts.
Upstairs, Ethan and Clara were talking, while downstairs, Katniss had just hung up Scarlett's call when Tyler returned with Scarlett.
Scarlett tried to get rid of Tyler, but others gathered around, concerned about her.
Some girls, guessing her thoughts, said things to comfort her, while the boys were clueless, not understanding why Scarlett had suddenly run out.
Among those who didn't understand was Tyler.
He even thought Scarlett had simply had another disagreement with Katniss, and he kept trying to convince her not to misunderstand Katniss.
Scarlett quickly dismissed those who were concerned about her and went to Katniss. Once she was sure no one else was around, she asked, "What you said on the phone, is it true?"
Katniss replied, "It's true."
Clara had disgusted her once, so she had to give Clara a little payback, right?
Besides, Ethan was her friend, and Clara was not good enough for him.
She didn't mean to be malicious; she just felt Ethan deserved to know the truth.
Scarlett's eyes were red as she grabbed Katniss and asked, "What should we do? She's about to get engaged to Ethan!"
Just thinking about Clara, who had appeared out of nowhere, made her anxious.
What made her even more upset was Ethan's attitude.
He had personally said Clara was his fiancée, so he must have accepted Clara into his heart.
"What's there to worry about? They're not engaged yet," Katniss said, trying to calm Scarlett down. "Clara's got a bad reputation in Luminous City. Just get a few old newspapers from there, and you'll see."
She didn't plan to tell Ethan directly, just wanted them to see Clara's past in the newspapers.
How they judged her would be up to them.
Scarlett looked at Katniss and said, "Newspapers? Fine. I'll have someone get them from Luminous City."
In these times, information wasn't as accessible, and getting old newspapers required someone to go there.
But her family had money, and getting a few newspapers from Luminous City reporters was doable if she asked her dad.
"What do the newspapers say?" Scarlett couldn't contain her curiosity.
Katniss shook her head. "I don't know the specifics, but they expose Clara. That's why she came to Starhaven."
She and Ethan were in Starhaven for training, but Clara and Desmond were there to lay low.
The Elise family had made their issues public, and they would be talked about in Luminous City for a while.
The Boleyn and Manners families had sent them to Starhaven to avoid the scandal.
She had heard all this from Cecilia.
Not getting any specific information from Katniss, Scarlett stopped asking and looked around. "Where's Ethan?"
After running out, she had hoped Ethan would follow her. But not only did he not follow, she hadn't seen him since she returned.
Looking around, she didn't see Clara either, which made her nervous.
Only Ethan and Clara were missing. Where had they gone?
Katniss pointed to the spiral staircase. "They went upstairs."
Scarlett immediately wanted to go upstairs, but as she took a few steps, Clara came down with Ethan.
Seeing them come down, Scarlett breathed a sigh of relief.
"Why were you up there so long? Whispering secrets?" Tyler teased as he approached them. "I didn't expect you two to move so fast, already talking about engagement."
"Yeah, it is pretty quick," Ethan said calmly, while Clara looked shy.
"What happened to Scarlett?" Ethan asked, noticing her red eyes.
Scarlett shook her head, gritting her teeth. "Nothing, just a misunderstanding. Katniss and I talked it out."
Ethan nodded, about to say something, when his phone rang.
He excused himself to take the call in a quieter spot.
Clara was left behind, but she wasn't afraid. She walked a few steps towards Katniss.
In front of everyone, she shyly said, "Katniss, I want to prepare a gift for Ethan. You know him well, can you tell me what he likes?"
Katniss didn't respond, just watched Clara's performance.
Clara wasn't embarrassed and continued to ask questions.
Katniss didn't want to stay with Clara, but since Tyler had organized the gathering, she didn't want to spoil the mood. Leaving was the best solution.
Clara had already made a fuss once, and Katniss didn't want to deal with her again.
Just then, Maximilian texted her, asking if she needed a ride.
She replied, asking him to wait outside for a minute.
Clara saw Katniss engrossed in her phone and felt angry, but didn't say anything.
As she waited for Katniss to finish with her phone, she noticed someone watching her. She looked up and met Scarlett's gaze.
