Chapter 439 Reinforcements
Hearing Nathan's response, Elodie finally felt a sense of relief.
But remembering what Hugo had told her about Nathan's tendency towards depression, she felt a pang of worry and anxiety.
Elodie instinctively wanted to comfort and distract Nathan, so she started rambling about the past.
At first, Nathan seemed lost in thought, letting her talk while he quietly listened.
As she continued, mentioning their life in Luminous City before Katniss caused trouble, Nathan was reminded of some scenes he had seen in his dreams.
Whenever Elodie mentioned Katniss, her mood soured, blaming Katniss for their family's current situation.
The more she talked, the less she could control her words, and her initial attempt to comfort Nathan turned into a rant.
"Mom, I'm tired. I need to sleep."
Suddenly, Nathan interrupted Elodie's rambling.
Elodie snapped back to reality, realizing she shouldn't have brought up unhappy topics.
Seeing Nathan's exhausted face, she stopped talking, tucked him in, and left the room.
Nathan watched Elodie leave, staring at the door as it slowly closed.
He recalled Elodie's anxious expression when she had denied the matching results, feeling more certain that his and Clara's match was successful.
It seemed he needed to start contacting other hospitals to prepare for the kidney transplant.
However, he didn't plan to tell Clara in advance; he wanted to secretly handle everything first.
But he wondered why Clara hadn't contacted him.
Just as he was thinking about it, Dylan's phone on the bedside table suddenly rang.
He quickly picked it up and heard Clara's voice.
Nathan didn't mention the kidney donation, instead briefly explaining that Dylan had been taken away and wouldn't be back for several days, asking Clara to take care of Elodie's emotions.
Clara was stunned, "What? What happened to Dylan?"
Nathan didn't want to elaborate, telling her not to worry before hanging up.
Meanwhile, Elodie, after some thought, called Lucas.
"Lucas, Dylan will be detained for a while because of Katniss. There's no use in looking for her. Can you come to Starhaven?"
Though she spoke in a negotiating tone, she didn't want Lucas to go against her wishes.
After being set up by Oliver, Elodie had changed significantly, often handling things more firmly than Oliver ever did.
Lucas asked why Dylan was being detained, and Elodie exaggerated the story before asking him to come to Starhaven again.
She wasn't resigned; she wanted Katniss to forgive Dylan.
Elodie's plan was simple: she thought Lucas could persuade Katniss to show some leniency.
Lucas finally agreed after her persistent persuasion.
Elodie breathed a sigh of relief and left the hospital.
As soon as she got home, she saw Clara.
Clara immediately came to greet her, "Mom, you're back."
Seeing Clara, Elodie felt a rare softness in her heart, but thinking about Nathan's intention to donate a kidney to Clara, she felt distressed.
She thought for a moment; she had managed to dissuade Nathan, but she also needed to comfort Clara.
"Clara, Nathan's match with you wasn't successful. Lucas will help you find another kidney donor."
Clara blinked, looking relieved. "Thank goodness Nathan's match wasn't successful. He shouldn't be as down as before, right?"
"I've advised him to stick with the treatment. He should listen," Elodie sighed.
She wasn't sure if this was the right thing to do, but she knew it would make everyone feel better.
Clara observed Elodie's expression, feeling suspicious.
She had a strong intuition that her match with Nathan was successful.
Otherwise, Nathan wouldn't have suddenly called her.
Although she hadn't answered the call at the time and Nathan hadn't mentioned the match when she called back, her intuition was usually accurate.
She trusted her intuition but couldn't bring up the kidney transplant herself.
However, the thought of Nathan and Elodie hiding the successful match from her made her angry.
Nathan had pretended to be willing to match, but now he was reluctant to donate his kidney.
Elodie felt relieved that Clara didn't question further.
Clara helped Elodie into the room, suddenly asking, "Where's Dylan?"
Elodie's expression darkened, her eyes filled with resentment. "Katniss caused Dylan to be taken by the police. He'll be detained for several days."
Clara looked shocked, as if she had just learned the news, and quickly asked for details.
"What did Katniss do?"
No wonder Nathan didn't want to say much earlier; it was related to Katniss.
She felt uneasy, remembering Nathan's sudden defense of Katniss recently.
"Katniss accused Dylan of slandering her, and the police took Dylan without investigating properly. Dylan would never do such a thing! But the worst part is, Katniss even had someone forge handwriting and bribed someone to identify Dylan."
"Even if the accusation was true, it was that person who posted it! How did it end up being Dylan's fault? I think it's all Katniss's scheme, maliciously framing him!"
Elodie was furious, having not received Nathan's support, she had an endless desire to vent.
Clara listened intently, growing more anxious.
She remembered sending Ryan to deal with Katniss.
Clara had wanted to make Katniss suffer and also give Ryan some trouble.
Whether Ryan succeeded in causing trouble for Katniss or not, Clara would benefit.
But now, hearing Elodie mention Dylan being caught for posting stickers, she felt panicked.
She worried Ryan might get caught and expose her.
She tried to calm herself and comfort Elodie. "Mom, don't be upset. It's bad for your health. We'll find a way to get Dylan out! Or I can go talk to Katniss."
She was comforting both Elodie and herself.
She thought she must ensure Ryan was careful and left no evidence of her involvement.
Elodie, soothed by Clara's gentle touch, said, "Clara, you're so considerate."
"Mom, so don't be angry. I'll go talk to Katniss and get Dylan released."
Clara's words were not very convincing, as she didn't get up while speaking, but her stance touched Elodie's heart.
Elodie instead held her back, comforting her. "It's okay, Clara. You don't need to worry about this. Just focus on school and getting better. I've already asked Lucas to handle it."
Clara felt slightly reassured and nodded silently.
She had things on her mind and didn't talk much with Elodie, soon returning to her room.
