Chapter 429 Returning to Luminous City to Escape
"What?" Dylan was momentarily thrown off by what Desmond said.
Desmond, sensing the disbelief, repeated, "I'm not in Starhaven anymore."
Dylan shot back, "If you're not in Starhaven, then where the hell are you?"
Desmond took a deep breath, knowing he couldn't dodge the question, "I went back to Luminous City."
He didn't offer any more details, just that blunt statement, which left Dylan momentarily stunned.
Dylan's voice turned icy, "You went back to Luminous City? What about Clara? She still needs a kidney. Do you even care about what she's going through?"
Suddenly, Dylan remembered what happened last night.
He furrowed his brows and, not waiting for Desmond to respond, demanded, "Are you avoiding Clara because of what happened last night? Is that why you went back to Luminous City?"
Desmond quickly denied it, "No, it's not that..."
The timing of his return to Luminous City was indeed suspicious.
Clara had just gone through something, and he left right after, which didn't look good.
But he was genuinely innocent.
"Dylan, I won't abandon Clara. I'll do everything I can to find a kidney for her!"
He had just made a few promises when Dylan coldly snorted, "Why are you telling me this? If you care about Clara, explain it to her yourself!"
Desmond was left speechless.
He wasn't sure how to face Clara right now, and according to Emily, Gabriel would probably give him a beating when he got back.
His situation was a mess, so he hadn't gone to comfort Clara yet.
Since Dylan brought it up, he could only agree, "Dylan, I get it. But my dad is pretty pissed, so I might need a few days."
However, before he could finish his sentence, Dylan hung up on him.
Staring at the disconnected call, Desmond frowned.
"Desmond? Are you hungry? I had someone make some food." Emily's voice came from behind, filled with concern.
Desmond's tension eased a bit.
Although Emily was overly concerned because she hadn't seen him in a long time, he could feel her love.
"Mom, I'm starving," he said.
Emily quickly and lovingly led him downstairs, "Come on, I'll take you to eat. You haven't been eating well in Starhaven, have you? You've lost weight."
He had been beaten by Emma's people before, and his injuries hadn't fully healed.
Fortunately, he was wearing long sleeves and pants, so the bruises were hidden.
Otherwise, if Emily saw the injuries, she would be even more distressed.
Desmond followed her downstairs and sat at the dining table.
Looking at the food, his eyes welled up, "Mom."
Emily immediately responded, "Yes?"
"Mom, you're so good to me."
Emily served him some food, "I'm your mom, of course I'm good to you. I missed you so much while you were away."
As Desmond ate, tears streamed down his face.
This scared Emily, who quickly asked what was wrong and tried to comfort him.
But instead of calming Desmond, she ended up crying herself.
When Gabriel came home, he found the two of them hugging and crying.
He had received the news shortly after Desmond returned home, and came back immediately.
"Why are you crying? Knock it off!" Gabriel stormed over and slammed the table.
Desmond, startled, hiccuped a few times and turned to see Gabriel's angry face.
He hadn't seen Gabriel in a while, though he had been scolded over the phone often. Seeing Gabriel, he choked out, "Dad."
Gabriel's expression softened a bit.
Emily stopped crying out loud, but still had tears streaming down her face.
She stood up and looked at Gabriel weakly, "Gabriel, you're back. Desmond must have gone through a lot recently. Can we not send him back to Starhaven?"
Gabriel glanced at her, seeing her fragile state, sighed, and then glared at Desmond, "He couldn't go back even if he wanted to!"
Desmond felt a chill down his spine from Gabriel's glare.
Emily also flinched but didn't care about the anger in his words.
She smiled through her tears and said to Desmond, "Desmond, did you hear that? Your dad said you don't have to go back to Starhaven. You can stay home."
Gabriel shot Desmond a look and coldly said, "Come to the study."
Desmond knew that look meant he was in for a beating.
Hesitating, he didn't follow immediately.
He didn't want to be hit by Gabriel.
"Mom," he whispered to Emily.
Emily stood in front of Desmond and looked at Gabriel's back, speaking softly, "Gabriel, whatever you have to say, say it here."
Gabriel paused, his expression complicated.
But seeing Emily's state, he sighed and glared at Desmond, "It's all because of you!"
In the end, the three of them sat on the couch.
"Desmond finally came back. Don't be so harsh on him." Emily gently persuaded, seeing Gabriel's fierce expression.
Gabriel liked it when she spoke to him in that soft voice, and Emily knew how to use her advantage well.
"Harsh on him? When have I been harsh on him since he came back?" Gabriel was furious.
Just thinking about the information Maximilian's people had sent him made him even angrier.
Desmond had some nerve.
He had even dared to provoke the Kate family.
And not only provoked, but he had also seriously offended them.
The more he thought about it, the angrier he got. Gabriel slammed the couch. "Ask him why he was sent back!"
If he didn't know Desmond had been beaten by Emma's people and was still injured, he might not have been able to stop himself from hitting Desmond.
Desmond, unaware that Gabriel knew everything, was scared by Gabriel's outburst and moved back a bit.
Emily felt a pang of sympathy, but didn't forget to follow up on Gabriel's words.
"Why else would Desmond come back? He must not have been able to get used to Starhaven. He hasn't been there long, and he's already lost so much weight."
She spoke while tenderly touching Desmond's face.
Gabriel, speechless, threw the documents he had brought back next to Emily, "Take a good look at this! Then talk to me!"
Emily was startled by the thrown documents, but relaxed when she saw they were just papers.
"Come upstairs with me. I won't hit you today!" Gabriel stood up and grabbed Desmond's arm, pulling him up.
Desmond, hearing this, finally followed.
Emily wanted to follow, but Desmond stopped her. "Mom, don't worry."
She sat back on the couch, still looking worried.
