Chapter 438 Severe Depression Tendency
The nurse asked Elodie for more details, but Elodie's face darkened, clearly reluctant to answer.
After all, airing family issues in public was the last thing she wanted to do.
Seeing Elodie's hesitation, the nurse explained, "The patient is not only physically unwell but also mentally distressed. We need to comfort him, so we need you to share as much information as you can."
Elodie's face turned pale. "What? Mentally distressed too?"
The nurse gave her a puzzled look. "The patient has been mentally unwell for quite some time, with severe depression. You didn't know?"
Elodie panicked. "Let me in, I can help calm him down. I'm his mother."
The nurse stopped her. "The patient hasn't fully recovered yet. Seeing you might agitate him further. It's better to wait until he's more stable."
Elodie waited outside, distraught, muttering to herself, "Severe depression, severe depression?"
She wasn't clueless like Ella; she knew how terrifying depression could be.
Back in Luminous City, she had heard about young people succumbing to depression and taking their own lives.
They had lamented over it at the time.
But Elodie never imagined Nathan would suffer from depression, let alone severe depression.
She waited outside for a long time, almost losing patience, when the door to the room finally opened.
Hugo and the nurse, who had been attending to Nathan, came out. Elodie rushed to them.
"Dr. Graves, how is Nathan? Is he okay?" she asked cautiously, her voice softer as if afraid of startling Nathan inside.
"He's calm now. Try not to agitate him," one of them said to Elodie.
Elodie nodded repeatedly, seeing the others about to leave, she quickly asked about the depression.
Hugo stopped to answer, "His condition is very serious. We've prescribed medication, and he's been taking it. You need to be more attentive."
Elodie listened, her heart pounding, her eyelids twitching.
Hugo said more, but Elodie didn't catch it.
She felt like Hugo was sentencing Nathan to death.
But Nathan was so young; how could he die?
Elodie didn't notice when Hugo left.
She only knew Nathan's current state was all Katniss's fault.
If Katniss had been willing to help Nathan, his illness would have been cured long ago.
Elodie had forgotten how Katniss had saved Nathan multiple times before, even managing to stabilize his condition to a barely manageable level.
Her mind was filled with hatred for Katniss, wishing she could rush to Katniss and make her suffer countless times over before dying.
"Mom, are you still out there?"
A weak voice came from the room, and Elodie's malicious thoughts vanished instantly.
"I'm here," Elodie responded quickly.
Despite Nathan defending Katniss before, Elodie still deeply cared for her frail son.
Nathan coughed twice, making Elodie's heart ache.
She quickly pushed the door open and went in.
"Nathan, if you're not feeling well, don't talk. I'm here, I'll stay with you."
Seeing Nathan's pale face, Elodie felt even more heartbroken.
She spoke while sitting by the bed, looking at Nathan with love.
Nathan let her hold his hand, his eyes downcast. "Mom, Dylan will be detained for a few days."
He had been too impulsive before, arguing with Elodie and almost passing out.
Although Hugo had treated him, Nathan knew his own body.
He could endure physical pain, but the mental torment was becoming unbearable.
Especially since the mental torment was worsening day by day.
He didn't know how much longer he could hold on.
But at least, before that, he wanted his family to wake up.
Now, he wanted to persuade Elodie not to harbor such hatred towards Katniss.
"Detained for a few days?" Elodie had thought Dylan was taken for investigation, but now she was both surprised and angry to hear the result.
But thinking of Nathan's condition, she quickly controlled her emotions, lowering her voice as much as possible. "What did Dylan do? Why is he being detained?"
Nathan didn't answer immediately. He carefully observed Elodie's face.
Seeing Elodie less agitated, he continued, "Dylan wrote a defamatory letter and had it posted in Katniss's training classroom. It caused a lot of harm to Katniss."
His tone remained calm, watching Elodie as he spoke.
Elodie's brows furrowed uncontrollably. She opened her mouth to say something but stopped herself.
She couldn't believe Dylan would do such a thing, but she didn't want to upset Nathan.
Nathan saw her conflicted expression and said softly, "Mom, so this isn't Katniss's fault."
"Even if this isn't her fault, Katniss isn't a good person. Nathan, stop defending her."
She didn't intend to upset Nathan, but speaking too much inevitably revealed her thoughts, so she stopped talking.
Nathan's sigh scared Elodie, and she quickly asked, "What's wrong? Are you uncomfortable? I didn't mean anything by it, I'm just afraid you're being deceived by Katniss."
Nathan weakly waved his hand, no longer trying to say more.
Seeing this, Elodie said, "Nathan, cooperate with the treatment, and you'll be fine."
Nathan closed his eyes, not responding.
Elodie fell silent too.
Just when Elodie thought Nathan was about to fall asleep, he suddenly asked, "Mom, did the match succeed?"
Elodie was caught off guard, instinctively responding, then realizing her mistake, she stood up abruptly.
"No!" she shouted, denying it loudly as if that could retract her previous response.
Nathan said, "Since it succeeded, let's arrange the surgery soon. Clara's kidney is still functioning, but delaying it won't be good."
Clara's kidney issue was detected early, and she had been taking medication to control it.
Because the control was decent, the transition from early to late stage shouldn't be short, so they were looking for a donor but weren't in a rush.
"No!" Elodie said, realizing she should deny the match result, not the surgery, quickly adding, "The match didn't succeed!"
"Really?" Nathan looked at her.
Elodie insisted, "It didn't succeed! So, your kidney can't be used for Clara!"
Nathan stared at her.
Elodie was nervous but remained firm.
Seeing Nathan still doubtful and persistent, Elodie continued, "You don't need to worry about this! Lucas is looking for a kidney for Clara! Just focus on recovering."
Nathan sighed softly, barely audible.
