Chapter 355 This Car Accident Was Not an Accident
When Clara asked, Ethan thought for a moment and said, "How about today?"
Clara looked at him, surprised. "Really?"
She hadn't expected Ethan to agree so easily to take her to the Anderson Villa to meet his parents, let alone decide to do it today.
Ethan nodded. "Yeah, let's go."
Clara wanted to say something more, but held back.
As they headed to the Anderson Villa, Katniss got a call from Scarlett and found out Scarlett had been in a car accident the night before.
By the time she hung up, she was already outside the school gates.
Conrad took her bag and asked, "Mrs. Hamilton, are you heading home or to the office?"
Katniss's schedule had been pretty regular these days, either going home or meeting Maximilian after her training sessions, so Conrad's question was routine.
Katniss replied, "To Serenity Health Institute, to visit a friend."
She had learned from the call that Scarlett was quite seriously injured, and as a friend, she decided to visit her in the hospital first.
Soon, Katniss arrived at Scarlett's ward, carrying fruit and gifts that Conrad had bought.
"Katniss, you're here," Scarlett said weakly, smiling when she saw her.
Katniss noticed that one of Scarlett's legs was heavily bandaged and suspended, with other signs of injury on her body.
"How did it get this bad?" Katniss asked as she approached the bed. "Did they catch the person responsible? Was it an accident?"
Scarlett replied, "They caught him. He was driving drunk and will be sentenced."
She wasn't someone to be trifled with.
Although the accident didn't result in a fatality, escaping legal consequences was nearly impossible.
However, Scarlett felt that the car accident was suspicious, as if the driver had intentionally aimed at her.
Katniss asked, "What did the doctor say? Is your leg seriously injured?"
Although Scarlett's leg was heavily bandaged, Katniss couldn't be sure of the severity.
Despite her pale face, Scarlett's emotions were remarkably stable.
Even when she mentioned the accident over the phone, there was no emotional fluctuation.
"It's not too bad, but I feel like it wasn't an accident." Scarlett hesitated before sharing her suspicion.
Katniss immediately understood her implication and was about to speak when there was a knock on the door.
The two exchanged a glance and didn't continue the conversation.
Katniss went to open the door.
When she opened it, she found herself face-to-face with Sophia.
Sophia looked surprised. "Katniss? What are you doing here?"
Katniss stepped aside to let her in and said, "I'm here to see Scarlett, too."
Sophia then remembered her purpose, placed the gifts she was holding aside, and began to comfort Scarlett.
Scarlett was happy to see Sophia.
Katniss listened to their conversation while peeling an apple.
It didn't take long for the conversation to shift to Ethan.
One was Ethan's sister, and the other liked Ethan, so they had plenty to talk about.
But after a few sentences, Sophia suddenly slapped her forehead and said, "Oh, I forgot to tell Ethan. I'll call him now to let him know to come see you."
She had rushed over as soon as she got Scarlett's call and only now remembered she hadn't informed Ethan about Scarlett's injury.
Scarlett wanted to stop her, but Sophia had already hurried out of the room to make the call.
Katniss handed the peeled apple to Scarlett and said, "I should get going, too."
Scarlett took the apple and hesitated before speaking, "Katniss, wait."
Katniss looked at her in confusion.
Scarlett hesitated before saying, "Last night, I had an accident after getting a newspaper. When I was taken to the hospital, the newspaper was lost."
The reason Scarlett had gone out so late was that someone had delivered a newspaper she needed.
But she hadn't expected to be hit by a car right after getting the newspaper, and it had slipped from her hands.
When she woke up in the hospital, she had asked a friend to look for the newspaper at the accident scene, but it was nowhere to be found.
Katniss asked, "Do you want me to help you find the newspaper?"
Scarlett shook her head. "I asked a friend to look for it after I woke up, but it was already gone."
Katniss immediately understood her implication and tentatively asked, "So you suspect the car accident is related to the newspaper?"
Or perhaps, related to Clara.
Although Katniss didn't think Clara had that much power, she remembered the middle-aged man she had seen standing next to Clara at the previous party.
Scarlett nodded and said, "Katniss, do you think Clara could have orchestrated my accident?"
"I'm not sure," Katniss replied. "But we can investigate the driver and the people who have been around Clara since she arrived in Starhaven."
Seeing Scarlett's puzzled look, Katniss explained, "She wouldn't have done it herself. She likely used someone else's help."
With the explanation so clear, Scarlett quickly understood and nodded, "Thanks, Katniss."
Just as she finished thanking her, Sophia returned from making the call.
"Sorry, Scarlett, Ethan can't come right now. He said he has something more important to do."
Although Sophia didn't know what Ethan considered more important, she disapproved of his decision.
Scarlett's car accident was a significant event, and Ethan's excuse of having something more important was hurtful.
So, when Sophia relayed Ethan's message, she couldn't help but lower her head.
Scarlett nodded and said, "It's okay, I understand."
She had already guessed Ethan's reaction, which was why she hadn't informed him about the accident.
After all, they had already had a falling out over Clara's fall.
Ethan probably still believed that Clara's injury was her fault, even though she had learned from the doctor that Clara's injuries weren't severe and had tried to explain it to Ethan.
Moreover, Clara seemed to cling to Ethan constantly.
Ethan likely didn't have time to visit her.
And since Scarlett suspected Clara might be involved in her accident, she didn't want Ethan to come.
Thinking about the lost newspaper and the wait for a new one, Scarlett felt anxious.
Feeling irritable, she dismissed the two visitors.
"I'm fine. You can go. I want to sleep for a while."
Hearing that she needed rest, Katniss and Sophia left the room together.
But after they left, Scarlett couldn't sleep and felt increasingly agitated.
