Chapter 430 Entangled
Starhaven, Dylan's face darkened as he hung up the phone with Desmond.
He never expected Desmond to return to Luminous City.
What troubled him the most was how to break the news to Clara.
If Clara found out Desmond had returned to Luminous City at this time, she might overthink things.
He stood at the end of the hallway, hesitating, trying to figure out how to tell Clara without upsetting her.
But no matter how hard he thought, Dylan couldn't come up with a good solution.
Just as he was racking his brain, Clara's voice suddenly came from behind him.
"Dylan?"
Clara's voice was clear and bright, not as downcast and sorrowful as before, indicating she had composed herself.
Dylan took a deep breath and turned around, seeing Clara's pitiful face.
Clara, so kind and sweet, how could she have gone through such a thing?
Feeling a pang of heartache, Dylan responded, "Why are you out here? Shouldn't you be resting?"
"I have to go to class," Clara said, her face pale. "I only have classes in the afternoon today, so I need to go to school."
Dylan's heart ached again, seeing how uncomfortable she looked just taking a few steps.
He quickly said, "Clara, let me take you home to rest. I'll call the school and get you excused."
In her current state, she shouldn't be going to school!
Besides, he was worried about her.
Clara seemed to hesitate, and Dylan waited respectfully for her to make up her mind.
After a moment of hesitation, Clara bit her lip and said resolutely, "Dylan, I can do it. I should go to class."
Dylan was about to persuade her further when Clara suddenly asked, "Dylan, when are you going to ask Desmond for me?"
Though Clara didn't say it out loud, she was still upset about Desmond breaking his promise.
But there was no way she would contact Desmond.
In the past, even if she didn't reach out to Desmond, he would always contact her.
But for some reason, after she coldly responded to his text, Desmond hadn't reached out again.
This realization made Clara anxious.
That's why she had mentioned Desmond breaking his promise to Dylan earlier.
She had been waiting inside, thinking Dylan had gone out to contact Desmond for her, but when she came out, Dylan hadn't mentioned Desmond at all.
Did Dylan forget?
Clara looked at Dylan expectantly.
Unable to withstand her gaze, Dylan hesitated but ultimately decided to tell the truth.
"Clara, I just contacted Desmond."
Clara was taken aback, then asked, "Did you ask him why he suddenly stopped coming to the hospital? He had promised me."
Her tone carried a hint of petulance and blame, but she knew Dylan wouldn't mind.
Sure enough, Dylan didn't feel any resentment.
Instead, his dislike for Desmond grew stronger because of Clara's tone.
"Desmond went back to Luminous City," Dylan said through gritted teeth.
"What? Did Desmond go back to Luminous City?" Clara froze.
Her blood seemed to run cold. She looked at Dylan, her voice trembling, "Dylan, does Desmond know something?"
She recalled the phone call that morning and the numerous missed calls from Desmond the night before, feeling a wave of panic.
Dylan frowned but admitted, "He was looking for you last night. He was the first to notice he couldn't reach you, and..."
Dylan felt guilty and couldn't continue.
Although Desmond was the first to notice that Clara was unreachable, it was Dylan who had answered the call.
If he hadn't been so anxious and told Desmond everything, Desmond might not have known.
"It's my fault for being too anxious and letting it slip," Dylan said, feeling dejected and guilty.
Clara trembled, glaring at Dylan, realizing he had told Desmond.
Of course, Dylan was the only one who had called her phone yesterday.
And Dylan had mentioned talking to Ryan.
Although Ryan hadn't said much, it was easy for Dylan to guess what had happened.
Filled with hatred, Clara knew she couldn't show it and lowered her head to hide her emotions.
She pinched her arm hard to calm herself.
"It's not your fault," she said hoarsely, then looked up at Dylan and threw herself into his arms, crying.
Dylan, flustered and heartbroken, held her.
Clara was indeed the kindest person, not blaming him even in such a situation.
He comforted her, knowing that crying would help her feel better, so he didn't try to stop her.
After a while, Clara choked out, "Dylan, I want to take a few days off. Can you help me get an excuse?"
Hearing Clara change her mind about going to school, Dylan was momentarily stunned but quickly reassured her, "Don't worry, Clara. I'll take care of it."
Clara, still in his arms, sobbed softly, calming herself.
Dylan comforted her some more, then took her home to rest, seeing how pale she was.
Clara watched Dylan leave, feeling deeply gloomy.
As the time Ryan had given her approached, Clara decided she had to go.
Ryan had compromising photos of her, and she couldn't risk it.
Even if it meant facing harassment, she had no choice.
Clara changed into more concealing clothes, put on a mask and hat, and went to the movie theater.
As soon as she arrived, she saw Ryan waiting by the roadside.
She shuddered, feeling a wave of nausea and wanting to turn around and leave.
But Ryan spotted her and called her phone.
Clara quickly took out her phone and hung up, but Ryan had already seen her and walked over.
"Why are you all bundled up?" he sneered, looking her up and down with a disgusting expression.
Clara didn't respond and turned to leave.
She was there to talk to Ryan about getting her photos back, but the theater entrance was too crowded for a conversation.
Seeing her leave, Ryan grabbed her, "Where do you think you're going? You came, so let's go watch the movie. I bought tickets!"
His breath reeked, making Clara feel even more nauseous.
"Let go of me!" she hissed. "I'm not watching a movie. Let's talk outside."
Who said she wanted to watch a movie with this disgusting person?
Ryan threatened maliciously, "If you struggle, I'll print your photos and post them all over your school!"
Clara panicked and froze, not daring to move.
