Chapter 389 The Same Look

Maximilian took Katniss to a cozy hotel that offered both dining and lodging.

From the outside, it looked pretty ordinary, but once inside, it was like stepping into a different world.

A waiter led them to the room Maximilian had booked in advance, which even had a private hot spring.

After a quick soak in the hot spring and a hearty meal, Katniss finally felt the tension of the past two days melt away.

Meanwhile, Emma was fuming after yet another failed attempt to catch Maximilian.

Her expression was as dark as a storm cloud.

The more she thought about it, the angrier she got.

She glared at the man beside her and snapped, "This is your plan? We didn't even see him!"

The man was sweating bullets, unable to understand how Maximilian had completely dodged their stakeout.

"Maybe he's staying at the office?" he stammered.

It was the only explanation he could think of, given that he had stationed multiple people at different exits.

Emma was seething with frustration. "Is there any other way to meet him?"

Over the past two days, she had realized that Maximilian was deliberately avoiding her.

Whenever she went to his office, he was conveniently absent.

She had tried waiting for him outside his office building, but somehow, he always managed to slip past her people.

Emma was completely unable to find an opportunity to meet with Maximilian.

The shrewd man beside her was equally helpless. "Ms. Kate, it seems he's not interested in the business we proposed. There's nothing we can do."

Emma shot him a glare. "Nothing you can do? Can't you come up with something? Useless."

The man didn't argue, just lowered his head.

After a while, Emma said irritably, "Tomorrow is my brother's funeral. He should be there, right?"

"He should be. The Kate family has invited him."

Emma had previously extended a verbal invitation to Maximilian, but it wasn't formal enough.

After Emma suggested inviting him, the Kate family sent him an official invitation.

Hearing this, Emma finally let go of her resentment and left with her entourage.

While dining with Katniss, Maximilian received a text from Chris.

Chris informed him that Emma had left with her people, but the company was still under surveillance.

"What are you looking at, Maximilian?" Katniss asked, adding some food to his plate.

Maximilian set his phone aside. "Just an update from Chris about the situation at the company."

Katniss didn't press further, as she wasn't very familiar with Maximilian's business affairs.

"How did the test go?" Maximilian asked.

"Great!" Katniss nodded and shared many details about the test with him.

Maximilian listened with a smile, creating a harmonious atmosphere.

After a while, Katniss noticed Maximilian's gentle gaze and felt her heart skip a beat. "How have the past two days been for you, Maximilian?"

"Not bad," Maximilian replied, then added, "I have to attend a funeral tomorrow. I'm deciding whether to go."

"A funeral? Whose?" Katniss asked, curious since Maximilian had mentioned it deliberately.

In her mind, apart from Patrick and Chris, Maximilian didn't seem to have many close acquaintances in Starhaven.

"Mr. Kate's."

Maximilian had initially received only a verbal invitation from Emma and hadn't decided to go.

But before picking up Katniss, he received a formal invitation from the Kate family, making him reconsider.

Katniss frowned, thinking back to what she knew about the Kate family in Starhaven.

She hadn't had any dealings with them and knew very little.

"Do you want me to go with you?" she offered, sensing that Maximilian felt obligated to attend.

Maximilian thought for a moment and then nodded. He didn't feel comfortable leaving Katniss at home, so it was better to keep her by his side.

Plus, with Katniss having two days off after her test, he planned to keep her close.

The next morning, they woke up, freshened up, and returned to their place.

In the afternoon, they headed to the Kate family estate together.

The Kate family had guests at the Kate Villa for the funeral, but aside from the mourning segment, the event felt more like a regular party.

After paying their respects, Maximilian and Katniss headed to the banquet hall.

Unexpectedly, they ran into Emma.

As the Kate family's heir, Emma wasn't greeting guests but wandering around.

Upon seeing Maximilian, she walked straight toward them without any hesitation.

"Mr. Hamilton, glad you could make it," Emma greeted Maximilian.

Maximilian responded politely, tightening his arm around Katniss's waist.

"And who is this?" Emma asked, though she already recognized Katniss from the information her subordinates had provided.

Maximilian, however, dropped his usual distant and cold demeanor. He glanced at Katniss and introduced her to Emma. "This is my wife."

Katniss smiled warmly at Emma, trying to be friendly.

But to Emma, Katniss's friendly gesture felt like a blatant challenge.

"Mrs. Hamilton."

"Ms. Kate," Katniss replied, feeling that Emma was acting strangely.

Emma didn't say anything else but stood in front of them, blocking their way.

Katniss glanced at Maximilian, who gave her a reassuring look.

Only then did Katniss take a closer look at Emma, sensing something odd in her gaze.

Before she could analyze it further, Emma abruptly turned and left.

"Maximilian, who is she?" Katniss asked once Emma was out of earshot.

Maximilian led her toward the banquet hall, explaining, "She's the heir to the Kate family, Emma."

Katniss nodded.

Recalling Emma's gaze, she tried to ignore the strange feeling and noticed Ethan nearby.

Ethan saw them too and, after saying something to the man beside him, walked over.

"Ethan," Katniss greeted.

Ethan nodded and exchanged pleasantries with them.

They hadn't chatted for long when someone started speaking on stage.

It became clear that this funeral was not just a simple memorial.

The speaker, a member of the Kate family, first expressed sorrow over Emma's brother's accident, then shifted the focus and called Emma to the stage.

This was Emma's official debut as the Kate family's heir.

Katniss watched Emma on stage and noticed her gaze toward Maximilian, feeling a chill down her spine.

She finally understood why Emma felt so strange.

Emma's gaze toward Maximilian was one she had seen before—in Yasmin.

She frowned, realizing Emma was also looking at her, seemingly in a provocative manner.

But when she focused again, Emma was already speaking and no longer looking their way.
After her rebirth
