Chapter 443 Foolishness Is Not Scary
When Katniss looked over, she saw them writhing on the ground, screaming in pain.
There were seven of them in total.
One was noticeably larger and overweight, while the others looked somewhat sturdy, like they had some training.
On Katniss's side, including herself, there were only four people: Katniss, Conrad, and two other bodyguards.
Katniss knew Conrad could fight, but she was surprised at how skilled her two bodyguards were.
Before she could even react, Conrad and the two bodyguards had already taken down all the attackers and were now tying them up.
Katniss wondered why they carried ropes with them.
Maximilian had arranged four bodyguards for her, but they usually worked in pairs.
This was the first time she saw them in action, and it was quite impressive.
What she didn't know was that Maximilian had connections in the military and had hired highly capable veterans or mercenaries, all of whom were exceptionally skilled.
While Katniss was still in awe, Conrad had already pulled out the leader, a noticeably overweight man, and was pressing him for answers.
The man, Ryan, was pinned to the ground in a humiliating position, trembling and terrified.
Katniss recognized Ryan from the photos Maximilian had sent her for verification.
Scarlett had also warned her about him, so she remembered his face.
Given Clara's impatient nature, Katniss suspected Ryan wouldn't hold out for long.
Plus, with Maximilian's recent attention on her, they were somewhat prepared.
"Speak up! What were you planning? Who sent you?" Conrad demanded, applying more pressure as Ryan continued to scream without giving any answers.
Ryan cried out in pain, "We weren't planning anything! We were just passing by, just passing by!"
"Let me go, or you'll regret it!" Ryan threatened Conrad, trying to get him to release his grip.
He hadn't had a chance to do anything to Katniss yet, so his defense was somewhat plausible.
But Conrad wasn't buying it.
"Passing by? Passing by with knives, charging at us?" Conrad kicked a knife on the ground and glanced at the other weapons scattered around.
Ryan's men were also subdued by the bodyguards, their weapons lying around them.
Terrified by Conrad's intimidation, Ryan broke into a cold sweat and dared not say anything more.
"Ask the others," Katniss suggested to Conrad, looking at the other subdued men.
Conrad turned to them and asked, "Ryan brought you here. What were you planning?"
The group remained silent.
But the bodyguards had ways to make them talk.
Soon, screams filled the air, and one of them couldn't take it anymore and spoke up.
"Mr. Martin hired us to kidnap a woman. We don't know anything else."
"Yeah, he didn't tell us anything else. We don't know!"
"Stop hitting us, we don't know!"
Ryan had brought six men.
Once one spoke up, two others quickly followed, and the rest reluctantly admitted the truth.
Katniss smiled.
Ryan was terrified.
He had hoped his six men would quickly overpower Katniss's three bodyguards, but instead, they were all taken down in an instant.
It was horrifying.
Conrad, unaware of Ryan's fear, smacked his head and asked, "Is what they said true?"
Ryan was so scared he almost wet himself.
He quickly nodded, "Yes, I accidentally offended you all. I didn't mean to!"
Ryan looked at Katniss, his eyes pleading.
"What were you planning to do to me?" Katniss ignored Ryan's pleading eyes and looked around with interest.
She glanced at the weapons scattered around and felt puzzled.
She knew from Patrick's information that Ryan wasn't very smart, but she hadn't expected him to be this foolish.
Not only was it unwise to commit crimes in broad daylight, but his blatant approach to her also seemed incredibly stupid.
Ryan, sensing Katniss's confusion, snapped, "What I want to do is none of your business!"
He couldn't understand how Katniss's bodyguards were so skilled, and his men were all defeated.
The more he thought about it, the angrier he became.
Katniss sighed and asked, "Clara sent you to cause trouble for me, didn't she?"
She and Clara hadn't officially become enemies, but she couldn't ignore Clara's blatant actions anymore.
Ryan, remembering Clara's promises, denied it.
"No!"
Clara had promised him benefits, and he couldn't betray her now.
Besides, he hadn't managed to harm Katniss at all.
Instead, Katniss's people had injured his men.
Fortunately, he had chosen a secluded spot for the attack, so no one would know they had initiated it.
Even if they were handed over to the police, they wouldn't face severe punishment, just a reprimand and release.
Thinking of this, Ryan's expression relaxed slightly.
He continued to defend himself without hesitation.
"I don't know why you think we were planning something. We were just passing by!"
"I don't know the person you're talking about, and she didn't send us."
Katniss, seeing his denial, calmly said, "It doesn't matter if you don't admit it. Just remember, if you see her, tell her to send someone smarter next time."
Ryan, enraged, glared at her, "What do you mean? Are you calling me stupid?"
Katniss innocently shook her head, looking at Ryan's disgusting face and his helpless position under Conrad's grip.
She said arrogantly, "I'm not calling you stupid, just stating the facts. Being stupid isn't scary; being stupid and used by others is."
