Chapter 450 You Talk Too Much
Clara stared at the man's blank face, trying to figure out what he had discovered, but she couldn't.
She figured that since he came back so quickly, he probably didn't find anything important.
But when she saw the document he handed to Emma, her heart started pounding.
The man completely ignored Clara's questions.
Even Emma didn't seem to care about Clara.
Instead, after listening to the man's whisper, Emma raised an eyebrow in surprise but quickly composed herself and began reading the document.
Clara, feeling anxious, thought her voice had been too soft earlier and asked again, "Ms. Kate, did you find anything?"
Emma looked up and gave Clara a cold stare, then told the person next to her, "Teach her a lesson, but don't leave any marks on her face."
Clara was momentarily confused by Emma's seemingly nonsensical order.
It wasn't until she saw one of Emma's men suddenly approach her and land a heavy punch on her that she realized what was happening.
She stood there, stunned, only reacting when the fist connected with her body, crying out in pain, "Ms. Kate? Why are you hitting me?"
"You talk too much," Emma said, watching as Clara took a few more punches before leisurely adding, "That's enough. Don't kill her."
Clara didn't look very healthy, so Emma hadn't initially instructed her men to treat Clara as harshly as they did Desmond.
But Clara's incessant talking needed to be curbed.
After the man stopped, he didn't pay any attention to Clara, who was now lying on the ground in pain.
He simply stood up, dusted off his hands, and resumed his position next to Emma.
Clara was in agony.
Although her face hadn't been hit, the punches were solid and felt like they were breaking her bones.
Even if her bones weren't broken, she was sure she'd be covered in bruises by tomorrow.
The physical pain was one thing, and Clara's heart was even more exhausted.
Especially after hearing Emma say she talked too much, Clara felt utterly humiliated.
With Emma's reminder, Clara didn't dare speak again.
Clara was worried about saying too much, not realizing that Emma's order to have her beaten wasn't solely because of her talking.
Emma had the man beat Clara after hearing a special reminder from her subordinate.
He had informed her that Katniss's bodyguards were all ex-soldiers and mercenaries, and that Clara had a significant grudge against Katniss.
Given how well-protected Katniss was, kidnapping her would be nearly impossible.
Clara's suggestion of shifting their focus from Desmond to Katniss was practically a death wish.
Emma understood that Clara's first goal was to stop her from calling Desmond back to Starhaven.
But the second goal, using Emma to deal with someone she disliked, was unacceptable.
Clara's attempt to manipulate her was laughable.
Did Clara think she was that easy to use?
So, the punches Clara received were her own doing.
Emma had initially been lenient because Clara was a woman, but now she saw that Clara had brought this on herself.
In the room, Emma continued to review the information her subordinate had gathered, deep in thought.
The entire process was excruciating for Clara.
Soon, Emma finished reading the document and looked at Clara.
"Do you have something to say?"
Emma's tone made it clear that Clara could speak now.
Despite the pain from her earlier beating, Clara swallowed hard and quickly asked, "Ms. Kate, what did you find out?"
Clara didn't dare mention anything about having Ryan deliver Katniss to Emma. She held her breath, waiting for Emma's response.
After all, she hadn't had a chance to contact Ryan today and didn't know if he had succeeded.
Emma seemed to find Clara's expression amusing and let out a light laugh.
Clara didn't miss any of Emma's expressions.
Seeing the mocking smile and disdain in Emma's eyes, Clara's heart sank, and she felt deeply embarrassed.
Emma didn't answer Clara's question directly.
Instead, she tossed a piece of paper in front of Clara and sarcastically asked, "Is this Ryan the person you planned to use against Katniss?"
Emma's voice was light, and the paper fluttered to the ground, but it felt like a heavy stone crushing Clara's heart.
Clara quickly picked up the paper and scanned it.
It was basic information about Ryan, including a photo.
"Yes, Ms. Kate," Clara replied, remembering Emma's earlier comment about her talking too much.
Despite having many questions, she didn't dare ask them and simply answered Emma's question.
Emma responded coldly, then asked, "Didn't you say he could deliver Katniss to me?"
Clara felt a sense of foreboding and didn't know how to respond.
As she hesitated, someone punched her again.
"Ms. Kate asked you a question!" The person said, clearly acting on Emma's orders.
Clara realized she had zoned out while thinking.
"Yes, I did. Ryan told me last night that he would act today and assured me he could capture Katniss!"
Clara, enduring the pain, didn't care about anything else and shifted all the blame onto Ryan.
Ryan had indeed told her he would act.
Although he hadn't guaranteed success, he shouldn't have backed out.
By now, there should have been some results.
Emma's voice was icy. "Ryan has been arrested and is currently in custody. By the way, he was caught before he even got close to Katniss."
"Arrested?" Clara was stunned.
She had been taken by Dione right after leaving school and hadn't had any contact with the outside world since early evening.
She had no idea Ryan had been arrested.
More shocking than Ryan's arrest was the fact that he hadn't even reached Katniss before being caught.
She had considered the possibility of Ryan failing, but hadn't expected him to be detained before even getting close to Katniss.
Seeing Clara's shock and confusion, Emma signaled to her subordinate.
The person quickly explained what had happened to Ryan, and the more Clara heard, the more disheartened she became.
She had hoped Ryan could at least do something, but he had ended up in jail.
And Katniss was completely unharmed.
Ryan was utterly useless.
Clara didn't want to admit that she had sent such an incompetent person, and the thought of Katniss being unscathed made her even more frustrated.
Fortunately, Ryan wouldn't be detained for long.
Clara, desperate to divert Emma's attention, quickly said, "It's okay if he failed this time. If your people help him, he can succeed next time!"
Emma sneered, "Hit her."
Before Clara could react, the punches started again.
