Chapter 490 She Was a Sadist

Nathan was feeling pretty let down by Katniss's sneaky and underhanded ways.

Katniss, on the other hand, didn't have a clue about Nathan's disappointment, and even if she did, she wouldn't give a damn.

She'd written off the Manners family the moment she realized they were a lost cause.

It was late, and with a test coming up the next day, she'd hit the sack early.

While Nathan was deep in thought, Elodie and Clara were helping Dylan over to the couch.

Finally, the three of them sat down.

As soon as Dylan settled in, he turned to Nathan, "Hey man, how've you been holding up these past few days?"

Nathan's condition was pretty rough, especially his complexion, but he didn't notice.

He was barely hanging on, his mind fixated on the idea of donating his kidney to Clara.

"I've been alright, Dylan. I'm sorry." If it weren't for him, Dylan wouldn't have had to threaten Katniss and end up in this mess.

Dylan's worn-out look was partly Katniss's fault and his own.

Yet, Dylan was so sincere in trying to help him, while he was secretly planning to give his kidney to Clara.

Nathan glanced at Clara, who was also looking at him with a conflicted and pained expression, and felt even more guilty.

That morning, he had taken Clara for tests and asked her to keep it a secret from the rest of the family, which must have been tough for someone as kind-hearted as Clara.

The more he thought about it, the worse he felt, and his face grew even paler.

"Why are you apologizing?" Dylan suddenly seemed to find some strength and said, "You're my brother. What are you apologizing for? Just focus on getting better. I'll find a way to cure you!"

His tone was firm and calm, completely different from before.

Elodie and Clara were both taken aback by his sudden energy, and Elodie was the first to speak, trying to soothe him, "Dylan, that's the right attitude, but you need to take care of yourself first. You've been through a lot these past few days. Rest and recover before anything else."

Although she had urged Dylan to find a kidney donor while they were in the car, she knew that searching for a donor didn't require Dylan to exert himself physically. Even if he was anxious, it wouldn't harm his health.

However, Nathan's illness was beyond the capabilities of major hospitals.

And the only person who could somewhat stabilize Nathan's condition, Katniss, had refused to continue treatment.

So, if Dylan wanted to help Nathan, he would either have to convince Katniss or find another expert.

Both options were extremely taxing and draining.

Elodie didn't want to see her sons fall apart one by one.

Simon's imprisonment had already been a deep wound in her heart, and the years of torment had taken a toll on her.

She couldn't bear any more heavy blows.

Seeing the deep worry and pain in Elodie's eyes, Dylan nodded slowly, reassuring her, "Mom, I know my limits."

Elodie wiped the corners of her eyes, not wanting to show her vulnerability or let her bad mood affect them. She said, "It's late. We should all get some rest."

Nathan asked, "Where's Lucas? Why isn't he back yet?"

Lucas had been working on getting Dylan out, so he should have been the first to be by Dylan's side.

"I asked Lucas. He's busy with something else," Elodie replied.

Seeing that Nathan seemed to want to ask more, she added, "Lucas should be back tomorrow. We can talk then."

Nathan didn't ask any more questions.

It was late, and they all needed to rest.

After Clara helped Elodie to her room, she saw Dylan's silhouette in the hallway.

"Dylan?" Clara called out, feeling that Dylan wasn't just passing by but waiting for her.

When she called his name, Dylan turned to her and said, "Let's talk in the room."

Clara nodded and followed him.

Once inside, Dylan suddenly asked, "Clara, you know what Lucas is up to, don't you?"

Clara's heart skipped a beat, and she became more alert.

She knew Dylan had figured something out.

She opened her mouth but didn't know how to explain.

After all, her thoughts were just guesses and assumptions.

She wasn't sure if Lucas had confronted Emma's people.

And even if he had, there was no way to seek justice.

Lucas had gone to Emma voluntarily, so he had to play by her rules.

Even when Clara had been taken to Emma against her will, Emma hadn't shown her any mercy.

Emma enjoyed seeing them suffer.

She was a sadist!

Seeing Clara hesitate, Dylan asked again, "Why don't you want to tell me? Can't I know?"

Before questioning Clara, Dylan had tried to contact Lucas by charging his phone.

But Lucas hadn't answered, either because it was too late or for some other reason.

Unable to reach Lucas, Dylan had noticed Clara's expression in the car and decided to ask her.

"It's not that..." Clara shook her head quickly.

She didn't want to tell Dylan he couldn't know; she was just afraid of being wrong.

After learning from Nathan about their compatibility, Clara realized that the Manners family didn't support Nathan donating his kidney to her.

This made Clara understand that no matter how much the Manners family seemed to care for her, they didn't see her as equally important as Nathan.

How could she not feel resentful?

Thinking about all this, Clara quickly put on a scared and aggrieved look, lowering her head so Dylan wouldn't see her complex emotions.

Dylan sighed, gently ruffling her hair, and said, "I'm not blaming you."

Clara quickly hid her emotions and looked up with tears in her eyes, saying, "I know, Dylan. You're the best to me. It's just that I'm not sure about Lucas, so I dare not speak out of turn."

After her rebirth
