Chapter 106 Something Very Important
Melissa and Sandra must have discussed her being someone else's mistress beforehand, and Regina just went along with their conversation.
Melissa was left speechless by Regina's casual retort.
"Regina, that's not what I meant." Melissa panicked, wanting to explain but not knowing where to start.
"Then what do you mean? Do you not want Sandra to marry a cripple, or do you not want me to be someone else's mistress? Choose one."
"Neither. Why do I have to choose one?"
"Because I want you to choose."
After a moment of silence, Melissa gave a self-deprecating and helpless smile. "Will I get what I choose?"
"Yes."
Regina's reply was concise, yet it exploded in Melissa's ears like a thunderclap.
The enormous temptation dangled before her eyes, within reach.
For so many years, Melissa had always played the good mother in front of Sandra. In front of Regina, she just tried to 'act' the part of a loving mother, but she never admitted it to herself.
Regina used to turn a blind eye, but now she found it annoying. She was so eager to tear off Melissa's mask of pretense.
"You have three seconds to choose."
Regina silently started counting down in her mind, but she had only mentally counted one number when she heard Melissa's voice, almost crying. "Fine, I'll choose! Regina, I'm sorry. I don't want Sandra to marry a cripple."
"Alright." Regina agreed straightforwardly. "I also hope you won't act in front of me anymore. Otherwise, Sandra might end up marrying a cripple again at any time."
"Regina..." Melissa anxiously tried to speak, but Regina directly hung up the phone.
This answer was something she could have guessed without even thinking, but she didn't know why her emotions were still affected.
Sitting at her desk, Regina exhaled lightly, calming herself for a while before placing the worn-out diary on the desk and opening it.
She flipped through it page by page, trying to find something.
That year, Regina was pushed into the water by Sandra and nearly drowned.
Fortunately, she was rescued. However, due to prolonged submersion, she suffered from a series of aftereffects due to brain hypoxia, like memory impairment.
This caused her to lose some memories and made some of her memories particularly chaotic.
Regina had never thought about retrieving her lost memories.
She thought, 'If they're forgotten, then let them be forgotten. There weren't many happy or memorable things anyway.'
But later, she met Nicole and learned from her about Douglas's unspoken affection for her.
Regina then made up her mind to retrieve those memories.
In fact, during those days in Garmeny, she had asked Douglas if he could be honest so that she wouldn't have to go through the trouble of searching.
However, Regina clearly felt his reluctance to talk about the past.
'He said it wasn't anything important. So many years had passed, and he hadn't left a significant mark in my life. There was nothing dramatic or thrilling between us. He was just an ordinary passerby in my life.
Finally, he said, "I didn't like him, and I couldn't see him."
Thinking of this, Regina felt a faint pain.
Even her hand turning the pages of the diary became stiff.
According to Nicole, she and Douglas met in her sophomore year of college.
And writing a diary was just a habit from her youth. She thought, 'Maybe I wouldn't find anything in this diary.'
However, Regina didn't want to miss any details.
Because she remembered that Douglas had fulfilled many of her wishes.
For example, she wanted to have a dog and liked watching fireworks.
These wishes were probably things she had when she was young.
Because as she grew older, Regina felt her life becoming simpler.
For a long time, she was just numbly supporting herself to live, not wanting to have any expectations for anything. Let alone making one naive wish after another in her heart.
When Regina turned to the twenty-first page of the diary, sure enough, she found some clues.
She saw her wish list.
It was a list of wishes she made on one of her birthdays.
Her handwriting was still immature, but it was clear that she wrote it very seriously.
'My wishes.
1. I hope to have another cute little dog like Molly.
2. I hope to see a grand fireworks display, just like in "Time Lover".'
Seeing this, Regina was stunned for a moment.
"Time Lover" was a TV show that was popular nationwide when Regina was in middle school. All the girls in her class were obsessed with it, and everyone was fascinated by the lead couple, but Regina only thought the fireworks scenes in the show were beautiful.
If she remembered correctly, the male lead in the show set off fireworks for the female lead eight times in various locations, which were very romantic and spectacular.
'This so-called wish was probably something I wrote on a whim. How could Douglas have known? It was unbelievable!'
Regina continued reading.
Her third wish was to get into Normon University.
Her fourth wish was related to voice acting.
In the end, when Regina saw that she had written a wish for her grandmother's health and for her to always be by her side, her heart felt heavy.
A tear unexpectedly welled up and fell onto the yellowed paper, smudging the dense writing.
After a long time, Regina closed the diary gloomily.
She continued searching in the old house filled with memories and old times.
Regina put in a lot of effort and found several old cell phones.
But because they were so old, some couldn't be turned on. Some had broken screens, were glitchy, or had black screens.
Regina put all the phones in a bag, planning to take them to a phone repair shop to see if they could still be used.
She went to three shops in a row, but no one would take the job. Later, she found a shop known for its excellent repair skills. When she placed the old phones on the counter, she saw the shop owner's very surprised expression.
"Please help me see if these phones can be fixed. No matter the cost, I want to preserve the data inside."
These old phones had long lost their practical value.
The shop owner asked, "Are these very important to you?"
Regina lowered her eyes slightly, staring at the row of phones on the counter. She thought of Douglas's silent affection over the years and nodded. "Yes, very important."
Regina left the phone repair shop, and it was already ten o'clock at night.
The shop owner said she would have to wait for the results, which might take about a week.
Regina was just about to go home when she heard her phone ring in her pocket.
She opened it and saw that it was a call from Douglas.
