Chapter 15 Want to See the Aurora with Her
Regina didn't understand nothing.
She knew the significance of being Mrs.Semona, but she had always feared overestimating her place in his heart.
However, she realized that she had been too worried, considering the situation from Mrs. Semona's perspective. After all, Douglas saw through the man's intentions at a glance. He would never treat his girl as a bargaining chip. He wasn't that kind of person.
Regina hesitated for a moment and said, "I'm sorry, I might not have fully adapted to this role yet."
Seeing her use such words again, Douglas smiled meaningfully and said, "My bad. I haven't made you feel close and familiar as a husband should."
"No," Regina realized something was off and was about to explain, but before she could finish her words, Douglas had already leaned in. The distance between them became very close.
Neon lights from the cityscape streamed through the car window, casting a glow on his handsome features. His deep gaze ensnared her, and under its intensity, Regina felt her head spin slightly. "Would you like to experience something more intimate?" he murmured, leaning in for a kiss. Boundaries appeared to dissolve, and though Regina questioned if it was all in her mind, she couldn't shake the sensation of being swept away by his piercing stare. Her eyelashes fluttered in anticipation.
He chuckled softly. "Forget it." At that moment, he seemed to understand the subtle fear in her eyes. He didn't take it any further. He was worried that things were progressing too quickly and would scare her, which was not his intention. Regina saw he distanced himself from her, and that sense of suffocation slowly faded.
She pretended to go on her phone casually. When she opened WhatsApp, she saw a message from Miranda asking how her day had been and if her boss had been difficult.
Indeed, the events of that party were common knowledge. [Regina, I never imagined you could be so audacious! To accept Mr. Semona's belt and then address him with such familiarity!] Regina's eyes flicked over the message, and a wave of mortification washed over her once more. She feigned ignorance, choosing to leave the message from Miranda unanswered. With a pang of guilt, she exited the conversation and resumed scrolling. The majority of her messages were work-related; she realized she didn't maintain many close relationships with friends or colleagues.
Suddenly, Regina came across her chat history with Douglas. The last time they had chatted was five days ago.
She glanced at the person beside her, seeing him sitting there with his eyes closed, resting. Suddenly, she clicked on Douglas's avatar. His avatar was a mysterious, deep blue aurora.
It had been over a month since she added Douglas as a WhatsApp friend, and Regina suddenly realized that she hadn't seen any of his posts.
Caught in a haze when she had accepted Douglas’s proposal, Regina had since been in a state of detachment, their interactions limited to becoming friends on WhatsApp with no further communication. She had been genuinely aloof, scarcely giving such matters her attention. Concurrently, Douglas himself had been notably quiet, with hardly a whisper from him on social media over the past month.
Now that she had thought about it, she had even found it unbelievable.
Regina suddenly wanted to take a look at his Instagram. To Regina's surprise, his Instagram wasn't like most people's nowadays, with private albums. Regina could view all his content.
However, he didn't post frequently, and most of his posts were about industry information related to finance. There were few glimpses into his private life. But at this moment, Regina patiently scrolled through the information, one post at a time. Before long, she had scrolled back to a post from six years ago. It was a photo of an aurora, with a short caption: [ Want to see the aurora with her.]
Regina clicked on the photo and discovered that it was his current avatar.
At that moment, Regina's mind seemed to rust, turning exceptionally slow.
For a moment, she really couldn't imagine what kind of expression and appearance a man as high and unattainable as him would have when he said such gentle words. She felt that the girl he wanted to see the aurora with must be very special to him.
Regina's emotions tangled within her as she pondered, 'Six years ago, his heart belonged to someone else. What of now, six years on? The avatar from back then remains unchanged. Could it be that his affection still lingers? Yet, he chose to marry me, his "business partner." Might he harbor some remnants of regret?'
With these thoughts, Regina stopped scrolling. She silently exited the interface, turned off the phone screen, and put it back in her pocket.
About forty minutes later, a black Bentley slowly stopped in front of Douglas's luxurious riverside penthouse.
Regina hesitated and followed him, entering the elevator together.
Her silent demeanor caught Douglas's attention. "Is there something bothering you?" Douglas asked as soon as they entered the house. Regina hadn't spoken yet when her phone vibrated in her bag.
She took the phone, and when she saw the caller ID, a look of exhaustion seemed to deepen on her face. She smiled helplessly.
She wasn't actually upset before, but she felt really bad now. She answered the call and put the phone to her ear, hearing a gentle voice on the other end. It was her mom, Melissa Valrose.
"Regina, have you been busy lately? I texted you at noon, but you didn't reply."
After so many years, Regina couldn't even be bothered to make excuses. She impatiently said, "Yeah, I'm busy. If you don't have anything important, please don't call me."
Douglas stared at her, his brow furrowing slightly.
Before Melissa could speak, another voice, crisp and somewhat complaining, came from the phone, "Melissa, I told you, Regina doesn't like us bothering her. You never listen, and you make her unhappy."
With a heavy sigh that betrayed her frustration, Melissa spoke, "Sandra, please don't put it that way. I'm the one to blame. Regina has endured so much over the years."
Melissa had ended her marriage with Regina's father, Fred Brook, on the grounds of irreconcilable differences. Their ten-year union had been marred by constant bickering, yet on the day they signed the divorce papers, an eerie calm prevailed. Fred, motivated by his pursuit of true love, readily agreed to relinquish all his assets to Melissa. His sole condition was his unwillingness to take part in raising their children.
At the time of her parents' separation, Melissa was just thirty—a woman of striking beauty who always believed that life held more in store for her.
In the second year after the divorce, she met a local wealthy man, a divorced man who was in real estate development.
In the third year after the divorce, they decided to get married. However, the man's family objected to her taking her two daughters. Melissa knew that if she married him with her children, she would definitely be criticized by his family.
After discussing with the man, both sides made concessions, and Melissa could only bring one of her daughters to marry him. Unsurprisingly, Melissa chose Sandra, and Regina became the abandoned one.
Regina suddenly felt a chill. She absentmindedly walked past Douglas and went to the kitchen to pour a glass of warm water, drinking it slowly.
Melissa remained silent for a while and then continued, "Regina, after work tomorrow, I'll have my driver pick you up, and we'll have dinner together. Tomorrow is Sandra's birthday, and she has a boyfriend now. He will also come."
A wistful smile played on Melissa's lips as she added, "Oh, and Sandra's boyfriend is a Norman University alumnus as well—an exceptionally remarkable young man."
Not only that, Sandra's boyfriend comes from a wealthy family. Melissa went on for a while about Sandra's boyfriend's excellence.
When she realized that Regina on the other end of the phone had been silent, she reacted, "Regina, I'm not trying to flex something. I hope that you can also find someone like Sandra, someone who loves you, treats you well, and comes from a good family. You're also at that age, and if you stay single..."
