Chapter 166 The Twins
After coming out of the coffee shop, Regina sat silently in the car, turning her head towards the window. She watched the scenery outside swiftly pass by.
She thought to herself, 'It's been half a month already since she left.'
During this half-month, there was no news from Melissa, as if she had completely disappeared from the world.
Regina felt a bit tired and slowly closed her eyes.
By the time Jason drove the car home, Regina was still asleep.
Fortunately, it wasn't long before Douglas came home from work.
He saw Regina sleeping in the car, bent down, and gently carried her out while asking Jason, "Where did she go this evening?"
"To see her sister."
Douglas didn't say much more, carrying Regina to the bedroom and gently setting her on the bed.
After a while, Regina slowly woke up.
"Are you too tired?"
Douglas sat by the bed, his brows furrowing uncontrollably.
During this period, Douglas had been frowning more than he had in the past year combined.
He was not someone whose emotions fluctuated greatly, and he never showed his emotions in front of others. But recently, people at the company noticed that Douglas' emotions were being exposed more.
Regina knew that she and the baby in her belly had been weighing on his mind.
She smiled and shook her head. "I'm not too tired. Maybe I didn't sleep well last night. I'm not in great shape today, but a little rest will do."
"Are you hungry?"
"A little."
"Then let's go downstairs and get something to eat."
Regina nodded and followed Douglas to the dining room downstairs.
In the dining room, Regina saw the grapes she had wanted to eat last night.
Regina had just mentioned it casually, and the next day, they appeared at the dining table.
Although there were many grapes on the market now, they were not in season and were usually ripened with chemicals, making them not very tasty.
Regina later heard from the housekeeper that Douglas had someone go to a famous fruit farm in the neighboring state to pick these grapes, which were cultivated very healthily.
Regina initially viewed Douglas' actions as unnecessary exaggeration, but she later became accustomed to his meticulous attention to detail.
Regina used to be someone who didn't like to trouble others or ask for anything.
She remembered that when she was five, her birthday wish was to have a puppy, but Melissa only gave her some toy dogs on her sixth birthday.
Because of this, Regina never told Melissa what she liked or wanted during her childhood.
She had grown accustomed to not having high expectations for anything from others.
But Douglas was different. Even if you only wanted ten, he would give you twelve. He never did anything half-heartedly.
Eating a bunch of grapes wasn't a big deal, but Regina's eyes inexplicably became a bit wet.
Seeing this, Douglas took a tissue and carefully wiped away her tears.
"I read in a book that pregnant women are emotionally sensitive and prone to crying. Turns out it's true."
Regina was amused by his serious and concerned expression and burst into laughter.
She quickly composed herself and focused on eating dinner.
Although she said she was hungry, she felt full after eating just a little.
After eating and resting for a while, Regina went to the bathroom to take a shower.
Upon exiting, she found Douglas not in the room as expected, but standing in his pajamas outside the master bedroom, appearing troubled.
"It's so late. Why aren't you coming to bed?"
Douglas smiled helplessly. "Can I sleep in the guest room tonight?"
"Why?"
Regina was not used to the idea of him not sleeping with her.
Douglas was even more unaccustomed to sleeping next to Regina every night without being able to touch her.
He had been abstinent for more than half a month, and although this was just the beginning for him, he thought that not sleeping next to her tonight might make it less painful.
Regina realized his concern for not sleeping in the same room after a moment of silence.
She said "Oh" and, feeling a bit embarrassed, turned and walked back into the room, closing the door behind her.
At eight weeks pregnant, Regina went to the hospital for an ultrasound to monitor the gestational sac's development as recommended by her doctor.
It was a Tuesday, and Regina had taken the day off.
She had planned to just take Jason, since it wasn't a complicated matter. But when she opened the car door, she saw Douglas sitting in the driver's seat.
Regina sat in the passenger seat, fastening her seatbelt while joking, "People will say you're skipping work for no reason again."
Douglas didn't mind and started the car, driving out of the underground garage and into traffic. "How could I miss such an important event as accompanying my wife for a prenatal checkup?"
He had never missed any ordinary day, so how could he miss such an important one?
About an hour later, they arrived at the hospital.
Douglas had switched Regina to a high-end private hospital in Oriant City, known for its advanced medical technology and privacy.
Regina followed the doctor's instructions step by step for the prenatal checkup.
Douglas stayed by her side the entire time.
However, when it came time for the ultrasound, the doctor reminded them, "This is a private examination; men should wait outside."
So, Douglas waited at the door.
Suddenly, Regina felt a bit nervous.
The doctor had her lie on the ultrasound table, lift her skirt, and lower her pants.
"Bend your legs and spread them a bit."
Regina took a deep breath and followed the doctor's instructions carefully.
The cold instrument entered her body, causing some discomfort, and she couldn't help but frown.
The examination process seemed to take forever.
Standing outside the examination room, Douglas was also tormented by the long wait.
After about twenty minutes, the examination was finally over.
As Regina put her pants back on and got off the ultrasound table, Douglas immediately walked in from outside.
"How is it?"
This examination was crucial to determine if the gestational sac was developing properly.
The doctor took the ultrasound report and smiled at them. "It's twins. Both have heartbeats and fetal buds."
Douglas and Regina thought they were hearing things and almost simultaneously asked, "What did you say?"
The doctor calmly looked at them and clearly said, "I said it's twins."
