Chapter 205 I Will Lose My Memory And Die
When Douglas picked up the notebook, it felt heavier than it should, and his heart got all tangled up.
If this was a diary, it meant it was Regina's private stuff, probably full of her little secrets, just like when she was a kid, writing down things she didn't want to say out loud.
He had to admit, the idea of knowing her secrets was pretty tempting. But now, he felt like a thief, sneaking around and doing something shady.
Douglas's fingers hovered over the diary's lock for what felt like forever without opening it.
"Regina," he muttered to himself with a self-deprecating smile, "please forgive me for being such a jerk this time, okay?"
As soon as he said that, with a tiny click, the notebook opened. The first page was packed with neat, tiny handwriting.
Her first entry was from thirteen days ago.
Douglas remembered that day clearly. Regina had gone out with Miranda for the afternoon. Miranda picked her up, brought her back, and they even had dinner at home. She mentioned they went shopping and bought a bag.
Douglas thought, 'This isn't a secret; it's just her way of keeping track of her life.'
But as he read on, he realized the diary didn't match the story she told him at all.
Douglas's face darkened. He stood there, frozen. The silence and heaviness in the room made it hard to breathe.
In that entry, she wrote: [My headache has been bugging me for a long time, and it's been getting way worse lately. I have to go to the hospital today. I knew what I might hear, and I tried to prepare myself.]
[I called Miranda to pick me up. Emily noticed something was off and asked where I was going. I just told her I wanted to hang out with a friend because if I said I was going to the hospital, she definitely wouldn't let me go.]
[At first, Miranda thought I was really going out to have fun. I told her I was going to the hospital, and she thought it was because I was feeling unwell due to pregnancy. But when I walked into the neurology clinic in front of her, she was shocked.]
[Before getting the results, I didn't say much. I figured the fewer people knew, the better.]
[I thought I was ready and could handle it, but I was shaking the whole time.]
[The instant I got the test results, it really felt like my world was collapsing.]
[The doctor said there's something growing in my brain that needs to be removed. If it keeps growing, I'll lose my memory and die.]
[Sorry, Douglas, I want to handle this on my own. It shouldn't take too long.]
[I will definitely tell you the truth, but not now.]
Regina kept it from Douglas for one reason.
The doctor suggested the surgery be done in May. Regina thought she could tell Douglas in April.
At least during this time, he could happily look forward to the new baby. She really didn't want to see him heartbroken.
She knew things would get worse, her memory would get fuzzier, and she had to take care of herself until the surgery. So, she started prepping for it early.
Regina wasn't much of a talker, but she poured everything that happened each day into her diary.
As Douglas flipped through the pages, each line turned into vivid images, searing into his mind. She worked hard to capture and remember everything.
Douglas felt like he was turning into ice, cold and stiff. The more he read, the tighter he gripped the notebook, until his hand started shaking.
He had to take deep breaths and look away just to keep his head clear for a moment. Then, he kept reading.
Finally, with red-rimmed eyes, he finished the diary. When he closed it, his heart stopped and his mind went blank.
He slid down the wall, sitting on the floor like an empty shell.
The house was eerily quiet, so quiet it made his heart ache. No one knew how long it had been when Douglas suddenly smiled.
It was a sad, powerless, and self-deprecating smile. Tears streamed down his face.
Regina didn't know how long she had slept. When she woke up, the sky was dim, like it was covered with a hazy veil.
With her belly getting bigger, everything was harder, even just turning over. She took her time before finally sitting up in bed.
She turned on the bedside lamp and checked her phone. It was five in the morning. Douglas wasn't by her side.
Regina's sleepy eyes were filled with confusion. She got out of bed, shuffling to the door in her soft slippers. It was still too early, and the house was quiet.
When she reached the door, she suddenly froze. In that moment, she forgot why she had come out.
Regina pressed her temples, feeling a surge of pain in her head. She was standing at her bedroom door, but she felt lost.
Luckily, the servant on duty noticed her and hurried over. "Mrs. Semona, you're up early today."
"I..." Regina hesitated, her eyes darting around as if searching for something.
The servant quickly caught on, "Mrs. Semona, are you looking for Mr. Semona?"
Hearing "Mr. Semona," Regina felt like she snapped out of a dream. She nodded. "Yes! Where did he go?"
"Mr. Semona went out early this morning."
Regina's confusion deepened. "Why did he go out so early? Hasn't he come back yet?"
