Chapter 164 She wished that Melissa would never look back

Regina was wondering why they suddenly started talking about this when she saw her colleague Minnie Parker, who looked like she had discovered a new continent. Minnie pointed at a folic acid bottle in the trash can and exclaimed, "I took this brand of folic acid during my early pregnancy!"

Regina remained silent.

Regina stayed at the hospital for two days following her pregnancy confirmation due to discomfort. Upon discharge, the doctor recommended several bottles of folic acid and some iron supplements.

Regina kept these items in her bag and took them on time every day.

But this morning, she accidentally knocked over the bottle of folic acid, which she had only taken a few pills from. She quickly cleaned it up and threw it in the trash can when no one was looking. Who knew Minnie would be so observant?

She noticed something was off right away.

Regina took a deep breath, silently returned to her desk, and tried to distance herself from the commotion.

However, until the "truth" was uncovered, it seemed no one in the office was willing to let it go!

"Sue, are you pregnant?" Lucia immediately asked another female colleague, Sue Rogers.

Sue's face turned red with embarrassment. "Lucia, don't say that. We're just dating; we don't even have a marriage certificate yet. How could I dare to get pregnant now?"

"In this day and age, it's not unusual to be pregnant before marriage," Lucia said casually, making Sue even more anxious.

"I'm not that kind of person!"

Someone else looked at the bottle and questioned, "Are you sure this folic acid is only for pregnancy?"

"It can also be used for pre-pregnancy," Minnie explained earnestly. "Of course, it's not just for pregnant women. It's just that this brand is exactly what I took during my pregnancy, so I got suspicious. So, who in our office is taking this stuff now?"

As the afternoon work hours approached, everyone was still gathered around, unwilling to disperse. Even Janet was drawn over by the commotion.

Regina rubbed her temples, took a deep breath, and then, in a soft but audible voice, said, "I'm the one taking that folic acid."

After all, her belly would grow day by day.

Everyone would find out sooner or later.

Since she was discovered now, she might as well come clean.

As soon as Regina finished speaking, everyone turned to look at her with shocked expressions.

But Janet wasn't surprised.

After all, the news of Douglas reading parenting books in the office had already spread like wildfire throughout the company.

A colleague immediately came over to Regina.

"Regina, are you really pregnant?"

Regina nodded.

"When did you find out?"

"Just... A few days ago."

After a moment of delayed reaction, everyone smiled and congratulated Regina.

"Congratulations, you're going to be a Mom!"

"Congratulations!"

Regina felt a sense of relief. "Thank you, everyone."

Lucia looked at the increasingly harmonious scene in front of her but frowned deeply. She stubbornly thought, 'No way? Regina's older husband can really get her pregnant?'

On the drive home, Regina kept her head turned towards the window, looking at the beautiful scenery.

The setting sun cast a painterly glow over the skyscrapers.

She was deep in thought when a weight pressed on her lower abdomen.

Douglas had one hand on the steering wheel and the other gently placed on her belly.

Regina was amused by his sudden gesture.

"What are you doing?"

"I'm touching him."

Regina's smile grew brighter. "I wonder if the baby is even the size of a green bean now."

So, what could he feel or sense?

Douglas slowly withdrew his hand and said seriously, "I felt it."

Regina thought, 'Maybe some feelings don't need to be touched or seen.'

She seemed to feel it too.

Upon returning home, the housekeeper had arranged a table loaded with food.

The housekeeper finally understood why Regina had been so fond of sour plum soup and spicy, sour foods lately!

Regina's appetite was decent tonight. She ate quite a bit at the dining table.

After dinner, Douglas accompanied her for a walk.

On a summer evening, even the air felt sticky and hot. As Regina walked into the garden, she started to feel uncomfortable.

However, her discomfort wasn't due to the weather but because she was reminded of a summer evening many years ago.

She had been carrying her backpack to Melissa's place when she saw a luxury car parked at the gate, ready to take Melissa away.

Melissa had clearly seen Regina but pretended not to, hurriedly getting into the car with Sandra and leaving.

Regina had chased the car, screaming and begging Melissa not to abandon her.

But Melissa neither softened her heart nor looked back.

Regina wished Melissa would never look back.

Regina took a deep breath and sat down on a bench by the garden, looking up at the vast sky above.

It seemed to take some effort not to let her eyes well up with tears.

These past few days, she had deliberately immersed herself in the joy of the new life coming, ignoring the things that made her unhappy.

But it was impossible not to think about them at all.

Whenever her mind had a bit of free space, those unhappy thoughts would sneak in, filling every gap.

Douglas knew what was going on in Regina's mind when she suddenly fell silent.

Regina suddenly smirked self-deprecatingly, as if talking to Douglas or herself, "How could I be so stupid? Even if I see through some people, I've never really gotten rid of them or let them go."

Douglas raised his hand to touch her head, the way he usually petted Molly.

His eyes were both sharp and gentle. "That's because kind-hearted people are always trampled on, while ruthless people live freely. So, you don't need to shackle yourself because of her departure. You've done your best, Mrs. Semona. Sometimes, you need to be a bit ruthless too."

Seeing Regina lower her head in silence, he continued, "Maybe I used to tell you not to have expectations of anyone but yourself, but now I'm telling you, you can try to trust me. You can find hope in me."

I will give you what I believe was the best in this world.

Regina looked up at the person in front of her.

At that moment, she felt like even a dead branch could sprout new buds.

Douglas suddenly remembered something and mentioned it on a whim, "By the way, Elizabeth said she wants to go to the cathedral to pray on Saturday. Do you want to go?"

Regina hesitated for a long time but eventually nodded.

On Saturday, Regina and Elizabeth left the cathedral in the evening.

Douglas had been waiting outside the cathedral for them.

He didn't believe in these things, so he didn't go in with them.

On the way home, Elizabeth asked with interest, "Regina, what did you pray to God for?"

Regina didn't have many specific thoughts.

She just hoped she could safely and smoothly give birth to her child and continue her journey with Douglas.

Of course, there was one wish she didn't want to say out loud.
