Chapter 64 No Messing Around
Nicole and Miranda couldn't stop praising Regina. Miranda said, "You look stunning."
Nicole added, "This dress needs curves and a slim waist. It's perfect for you!"
Douglas shot Nicole a warning glance when he heard her excitement.
But Nicole pressed on, "Don't you think Regina looks amazing? Doesn't she have a great figure?"
Before Douglas could reply, Regina felt awkward and said, "This dress isn't really my style. Maybe I should..."
Douglas cut her off, "It looks great. Buy it."
Miranda, seeing the affection in Douglas' eyes, still felt like she was dreaming. Her best friend had really married her boss! It seemed surreal, but they looked perfect together.
Meanwhile, Nicole kept picking out clothes. "Your style can be versatile; don't limit yourself. If I had a chest like yours..."
Douglas snapped, "Nicole, one more word, and today's expenses come out of your account."
Nicole immediately shut up but later whispered to Regina, "I might've upset him by always talking about 'chests' in public."
Nicole was a straightforward person who disliked beating around the bush; she spoke her mind whenever an idea popped into it. Regina had been complimented several times by Nicole on her bosom, something that made Regina feel embarrassed.
Nicole reflected, "He was right to call me out. I shouldn't have said that. It made you uncomfortable. I'm sorry."
Regina quickly said, "It's okay."
"Don't worry, Douglas is a proper guy. He never messed around before marriage," Nicole suddenly changed the topic, making Regina pause. She had many thoughts swirling in her mind.
Regina asked, "How many relationships has Douglas had before?"
Nicole replied, "Douglas never had a serious relationship. Many girls pursued him, but he wasn't interested." But Regina remembered seeing one of Douglas' Instagram posts about wanting to watch the Northern Lights with someone.
'Someone like Douglas must have had a girlfriend,' Regina thought.
Regina was skeptical. "Really, never?"
Nicole thought carefully, saying, "Maybe there was one, but it doesn't count. They dated for about a month."
She thought, 'Over the past few years, my family has indeed been pushing hard for Douglas to settle down. But if we're being precise, Douglas and that girl weren't really in a relationship. It was all one-sided. Douglas never had any intentions in that direction. The so-called month-long relationship was just that girl making claims as his girlfriend. Once Douglas found out, there was no further development.'
Regina lowered her eyes and stayed silent.
Nicole wanted to say more but saw Douglas walking towards them after his call. She turned around and continued shopping.
They shopped until they were tired and then found a restaurant to eat and drink.
By the time they wrapped up, it was already 7 PM.
Douglas arranged for a driver to take Miranda home and had Jason escort Nicole back to the Semona Estate. He specifically instructed, "Make sure Nicole gets home. She hasn't been back in six months. Grandpa, Mom, and Dad miss her. She should spend some time with her family."
Nicole immediately saw through Douglas's plan. He just wanted some alone time with Regina.
Nicole asked, "Can't I stay at your place for one night? Your big riverside apartment can't fit me?"
Douglas ignored her and nodded at Jason. Jason walked over, opened the car door, and said, "Miss, please."
Nicole huffed and got into the car. The surroundings suddenly became much quieter.
"Let's go, Mrs. Semona," Douglas said, opening the passenger door.
Regina hesitated, looked at him, and after a few seconds, got into the car with her eyes downcast.
Douglas noticed something was off. He squinted slightly but said nothing. Halfway home, he spoke up, "There are some things that should be said directly between husband and wife."
Regina looked at Douglas, who was focused on driving. "What things?"
Douglas replied, "Mrs. Semona, I should be asking you that. You don't seem very happy. Why? If I'm not mistaken, it has something to do with what you and Nicole talked about while I was on the phone. You've been distracted since then."
Regina knew he was meticulous, but this was too much. Nothing escaped his eyes.
She felt that if she lied now, he would surely see through it.
"I was chatting with Nicole, and I asked her if you had any girlfriends before. She said you had one." Regina felt anxious as she spoke.
She quickly clarified, "I'm not concerned about you having had a girlfriend."
Regina felt she had no right to care about Douglas' dating history. After all, her six-year relationship with Philip was a source of shame for her.
"I just..." Regina didn't know how to express her thoughts to Douglas.
Douglas didn't seem to mind.Despite Regina's striking beauty, she was inherently aloof, like a glass of ice-cold water. It wasn't that she was boring; rather, she was indifferent to many people and things.
Even in their marriage, she hadn't been particularly invested. If Douglas could see a bit more emotion from her in this marriage, it would actually make him happy.
Douglas thoughtfully tapped his fingers on the steering wheel.
Just as Regina was guessing his thoughts, she heard his husky voice. "Mrs. Semona, trust me, I never messed around before marriage."
He silently omitted that one night.
He thought, 'That night, the woman is Regina, so it shouldn't count as messing around, right?'
He continued, "And about that so-called month-long 'relationship'—it was all a misunderstanding. She was a blind date set up by my family. We met maybe three times in that month, each time for no more than fifteen minutes." He looked at her with a tender expression, his tone almost playful. "So, don't be upset, okay?"
