Chapter 222 Douglas Takes Care of the Kids
This time, they kept it to just kissing and hugging.
They wanted to go further, but it just wasn't in the cards yet.
Even though Douglas hadn't had sex in ages, he really valued Regina and didn't want to rush things.
Seeing her leaning weakly against his chest broke his heart.
"Has your head been hurting these past couple of days?" he asked.
Regina shook her head. "Nope, it's been fine."
She used to have headaches, tinnitus, and sometimes her memory would mess up, but over the last two months, she felt like she was really bouncing back after the surgery.
Hearing that, Douglas finally let out a sigh of relief.
He carried Regina to the bathroom for a bath.
In the big tub, bubbles covered their bodies but couldn't hide their growing desires.
They were both holding back.
After the bath, even though Regina wasn't sleepy, she just wanted to lie in bed, wrapping her arms around Douglas's waist.
They chatted about random stuff.
Out of nowhere, Douglas gently stroked her face and said softly, "Mrs. Semona, once you're all better, let's go on a trip, okay?"
Douglas remembered Regina had once told him that no matter how busy they got, they should always make time to go out together.
Maybe her illness made Douglas rethink his future plans.
Regina was definitely a big part of his future.
He was determined to make all her wishes come true.
Regina happily agreed.
Seeing her body slowly getting better, Regina also started thinking about her future.
She dreamed of a happy family and a job she loved.
Whatever she wanted to do, Douglas was all in.
The next day was Saturday.
Douglas still got up early. He hit the gym, took a shower, and by the time he was out, Matt and Lily were just waking up.
He jumped right into taking care of the kids.
Regina woke up a bit later, and when she opened her eyes, it was already ten in the morning.
She quickly ran to the nursery.
The room was filled with playful music.
Standing at the door, she peeked in and saw Douglas sitting on the carpet, holding Lily in one arm and playing with a toy with Matt in the other.
The four-month-old baby had already learned to roll over and was starting to crawl.
Matt was wriggling like a little caterpillar next to Douglas.
The scene made Regina smile.
She stood at the door for a bit before pushing it open and walking in.
Hearing the noise, Douglas turned his head.
"When did you wake up?"
"Just now."
Regina sat down cross-legged next to him.
"Don't you usually read in the morning?"
Douglas knew she was still working hard to join the State Department.
"Let's be lazy on the weekend."
Regina smiled and quickly joined in playing with Matt and Lily.
Maybe because Douglas had been home with the kids all weekend, Matt and Lily were extra clingy to him. When he had to go to work on Monday, they cried their little hearts out.
As soon as Douglas picked them up, they stopped crying.
But the moment he put them down, they wailed like sirens.
Regina and the nanny tried everything to calm them down, but nothing worked, and it was clear Douglas was going to be late for work.
Regina knew he had a super important meeting that morning.
Just as she was hesitating, Douglas said, "How about I take them to the office today?"
"What?" Regina looked at him, thinking she misheard.
"I'll take Matt and Lily to the office."
Regina was speechless.
Douglas turned to the nanny, "Could you pack some things for me?"
The nanny got the hint and quickly packed a bag for him.
Baby formula, bottles, diapers, some baby food, and their favorite toys.
So, that day, the whole company got to see Douglas in full dad mode!
Douglas, in his sharp shirt and trousers, walked into the Executive Office with a kid in each arm.
"Oh my God, Mr. Semona looks so handsome with kids!"
"Who else understands the feeling I had this morning when I saw that scene?"
"Did anyone else notice Mr. Semona has that perfect husband vibe? Who can resist that charm?"
"He looks so sexy holding a baby!"
"Now I want two kids."
Douglas took the kids back to his office.
He glanced at the clock; only five minutes left until the meeting.
He planned to put the kids in the lounge and have the two nannies he brought watch them until he finished the meeting.
Matt was fine, playing with toys on the big bed in the lounge, but Lily kept looking at Douglas with her big, watery eyes. As soon as he let go, she started crying.
Douglas smiled helplessly.
If he delayed any longer, he'd be late for his meeting.
At nine sharp, the meeting started.
Everyone looked towards the door in confusion. Douglas, who usually arrived a bit early, was right on time today.
But what puzzled everyone even more was what he was holding!
Everyone was stunned, unable to believe their eyes!
Douglas sat down at the long table in the conference room, holding a child with a pacifier in his mouth.
Douglas looked at everyone and asked calmly, "Sorry, everyone, the baby was crying badly and insisted on being held by me. You don't mind, do you?"
Everyone was silent.
Lily was very well-behaved. As long as she was in Douglas's arms, she didn't cry or fuss. At this moment, she was quietly lying on Douglas's chest, looking like a cute little accessory.
Everyone liked her and said they didn't mind.
The meeting went on smoothly.
Everyone felt that maybe because of Lily, Douglas had a different vibe today, as warm as a spring breeze.
Meanwhile, because Matt and Lily went to work with Douglas, Regina was super worried at home.
She wasn't sure if they would misbehave, if Douglas could manage them at the office, or if they would disrupt his work.
Just as Regina was stressing out, her phone buzzed several times.
Regina quickly picked it up and saw it was a message from Miranda.
She didn't say anything, just sent a bunch of photos.
Regina was stunned when she saw them.
There were shots of Douglas walking into the company lobby with a kid in each arm and pics of him holding Lily during a meeting in the conference room.
There was even a photo taken in the Executive Office.
Douglas was sitting on the sofa, feeding Matt.
In the photo, Douglas was clearly dressed in a suit, looking all elite, yet there was nothing weird about him doing these dad tasks.
Regina couldn't take her eyes off the photos, and a smile spread across her face.
In the afternoon, Douglas got pretty busy.
Luckily, both kids were asleep in the lounge.
Jason knocked on the office door, walked up to him, and respectfully said, "Mr. Semona, the matter has been taken care of."
He was talking about Fred and Sandra.
"They won't be bothering Mrs. Semona again."
Douglas didn't even look up, his eyes glued to the data on the computer screen, his fingers tapping away on the keyboard. The faint sound of typing was especially noticeable in the quiet room.
Jason held his breath, sensing Douglas was in a bad mood.
Honestly, whatever happened to Fred and Sandra, they had it coming.
However, whenever those names were mentioned, Douglas couldn't help but recall Regina's challenging upbringing, clawing her way up from a broken family.
He could always feel her pain.
"I get it. Don't mention any of this to Regina."
Jason nodded. "Understood." But he didn't leave right away. He hesitated and then said, "By the way, Mr. Semona, Philip is hospitalized again."
Philip?
Hearing the name, Douglas sneered.
This guy was like a thorn that needed to be pulled out.
Last time Regina had an episode, she went to find Philip.
Philip knew Regina was in a bad state but still took her away, which really pissed Douglas off.
Lately, Douglas had been busy with Regina and the kids. It seemed like he hadn't been paying attention to Philip, but in reality, Douglas had never taken his eyes off him.
Douglas had previously let Edward handle Philip.
But Edward messed up. In a fit of rage, he stabbed Philip in the heart but didn't kill him, ruining his own life instead.
He got locked up for attempted murder.
The high position he had in the company was also destroyed by his own hands.
Philip had gambled his life on that stab.
He won against Edward, but that stab left him with a permanent ailment, making hospital visits and medication a regular part of his life.
Douglas typed something into the computer, and soon, Jason heard the printer on the desk making a soft clicking sound.
Quickly, a sheet of paper filled with text appeared in front of him.
Douglas handed the paper to him. "Send this to Philip."
Philip's hospitalization wasn't just because of Edward's stab.
He had severe psychological issues that had become more obvious over the past year. He often suffered from insomnia and sometimes became agitated, needing a lot of medication and occasional psychological treatment.
That day, he came out of the psychologist's office in the evening. Instead of going home, he went to the Heyday Group building.
Sitting in his chair at the desk, he looked up.
Not far away was a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows, offering a view of the bustling city.
Before he got this position, his eyes were full of ambition.
Now that he finally sat here, his eyes were full of fatigue.
He slowly closed his eyes, leaning back in the chair. He didn't know how long it had been when he heard footsteps approaching him.
But he didn't open his eyes.
He just sat there, lost in thought.
He remembered the day Regina called him, remembered her sitting in the passenger seat of his car, remembered that stolen moment of time.
That moment wasn't the best time they had together, but it was the one Philip kept recalling.
That time, he was so close to her.
It was the moment he felt most hopeful in his life.
They said she had memory issues.
Her memory was regressing, and she couldn't remember many things.
Philip thought her memory might regress to the day she still loved him. She might forget the harm he had done to her and everything related to Douglas.
He held onto a glimmer of hope, waiting to be favored by luck.
But in the end, he watched his hope shatter.
He should have known that no matter what, she would never love him again.
Philip took a deep breath, tilting his head back, his Adam's apple moving with difficulty.
Mars, who had been in the office for a while, finally spoke, "Mr. Sterling, a document was delivered for you."
Philip opened his eyes and looked at the item Mars placed on his desk.
It was a sealed manila envelope.
"What's inside?"
Mars replied honestly, "I don't know. It was delivered this afternoon. You were at the hospital, so the secretary gave it to me."
Philip stared at the envelope, picked it up, and opened it.
Inside was a thin sheet of paper, but as soon as Philip read the first line, his expression changed.
Mars watched Philip's face anxiously. Suddenly, Philip stood up, tore the paper into pieces, and threw them into the air.
Mars watched the fragments flutter down, feeling increasingly uneasy. "Mr. Sterling, what is it?"
Philip chuckled self-deprecatingly, "A death notice."
Mars fell silent.
He hesitantly picked up a few pieces, trying to piece them together.
Soon, he had a clue.
The two pieces in his hand formed the name of a medication.
Mars was very familiar with this medication.
It was a heart disease medication that William had been taking.
The day William died suddenly, the bottle of this medication was at his feet.
Mars took a deep breath, clutching the pieces tightly.
He cautiously looked up at Philip again.
Philip's eyes were bloodshot, as if he were at the center of a volcanic eruption, about to explode.
It was clear who had sent this document.
Mars thought, 'There are only two people who have been persistently investigating this matter. One is Edward, who is in prison and doesn't have the capability. The other is Douglas, who indeed has the ability to find out.'
