Chapter 53 Would You Like to Have a Baby with Me
Douglas had no idea what Regina might associate with that red hairband. But he remembered that night clearly. In the dimness, on the soft bed, two entwined figures. He had blindfolded her with the hairband, and she, with soft red lips, had wanted to cry out, but it came out as a broken moan.
Douglas's breath quickened. He glanced at the project proposal in his hand and threw it onto the desk. He told Jason, "The meeting is delayed by half an hour."
"Got it!" Although Douglas didn't seem to be blaming him, Jason was far from at ease. He hesitated in the office for a while before leaving.
Douglas took a cigarette from the side, bit it, and lit it. He leaned back in his chair, lost in thought.
From that night in the office, it was clear that Regina was deeply affected by her first experience. Douglas had always been decisive, but now he hesitated.
Would she accept it if he told her that he was the one that night?
Or would it destroy their already fragile relationship?
Suddenly, he picked up his phone, opened WhatsApp, found Regina's name, and sent a message. Regina was puzzled when she received Douglas's message. She saw the long line of words he sent and asked her,
“Douglas: [Mrs. Semona, did you see the red hairband in my desk drawer?].”
Regina hesitated for a few seconds, then carefully typed a few words on the screen.
“Regina: [I saw it.].”
“Regina: [It's yours.].”
Regina quietly waited for his follow-up message, but she never received it for a long time. He was probably in a meeting. Regina didn't disturb him anymore, she just silently wondered in her heart if it was really hers or if he was giving it to her.
Regina thought that if he came home tonight, she would ask him about it to figure out.
However, Regina didn't expect that in the evening, when it was almost time to get off work, the hospital called and said that Tasha had a sudden emergency and was taken to the emergency room. As soon as she heard this news, Regina panicked. She quickly asked Janet to leave and rushed to the hospital.
The nurse taking care of Tasha said that Tasha's condition was fine these days. After lunch today, Tasha saw that the weather was good, so she asked the nurse to take her outside for a walk in a wheelchair. But for some reason, she suddenly had a headache and fainted.
When Regina arrived at the hospital, Tasha had not yet come out of the emergency room. It was clearly winter, but her back was soaked with cold sweat. She went limp with fear and worry, slowly leaning against the wall by the emergency room door and crouching down.
She squatted there quietly, not knowing how long it had passed, maybe only ten minutes. Regina found a pair of shiny leather shoes in her sight, and her gaze stiffly followed those long legs.
It's Douglas.
At the moment she looked up, he bent down and easily picked her up. He said, "I'll wait here, you go to the ward."
"But..."
"Be good."
Douglas carried Regina back to the ward where Tasha had stayed before. He put her on the sofa, and just as she was about to get up, he reached out and touched her head, gently pressing her back.
"I'll handle that. Is there anything you're worried about?"
Yes. He would use his connections, spend the most money, hire the best doctors, and use the best medical equipment, trying every possible way.
But Regina knew in her heart that at Tasha's age and in her current condition, many things were beyond human control. She looked at Douglas's gentle and determined eyes, and in the end, she nodded in agreement.
Douglas went to find the doctor to discuss the situation and come up with a treatment plan.
Every time such a situation arose in the past, Regina had to deal with it alone. Since Regina's senior year in high school, Tasha had been very sick. She still remembered that two days before she took the SAT, she was in the hospital, studying and taking care of Tasha.
Regina anxiously sat in the ward, waiting. Suddenly, she caught sight of a photo frame on the table, a photo of her and Tasha. In the photo, she was wearing a red hairband, smiling happily, while Tasha was looking at her with affection. Regina walked to the table and picked up the photo frame, looking at it for a long time until her eyes became sore.
Finally, she looked away and saw many small items on the table. She opened a jewelry box and found a cross necklace inside. Regina recognized this necklace, it belonged to Tasha. Tasha had said that she wanted to give this necklace to Regina's child, hoping to bring good luck and safety to the child.
There was also a card next to the jewelry box. Regina was also very familiar with Tasha's handwriting on the card. "Tasha spent a long time writing this card!"
The nurse walked in at this time and stood next to Regina, saying, "Tasha said this necklace is a gift for your child. She wanted to write the card with blessings beautifully, and if there were any flaws, she would discard it and rewrite it. She said that what she left for you must be the best!"
Not only that, Tasha left everything she could in this world to Regina. Regina sat in the ward with red eyes, waiting silently.
After about five hours, there was a message from the operating room that the surgery was over, and Tasha was sent to the ICU. She was still in a coma and needed further observation. Regina could only stand at the door of the ICU ward from a distance, looking through the small glass window.
Seeing her teary eyes, Douglas embraced her and gently wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes with his warm fingertips. "Don't cry, okay?"
Regina nodded, but the tears were uncontrollable, falling in larger and larger drops. Douglas held her tighter. Regina stayed in the hospital for a day and a night, but Tasha showed no signs of waking up. Douglas also temporarily put down his work and accompanied her.
In the ward, Douglas saw the gifts that Tasha had left for them on the table, and he was also slightly taken aback. He looked at the card. It was full of words wishing them well. It was clear that Tasha had written it with seriousness and effort. Beside the card was the cross necklace meant for their child. Tasha's hope was very obvious. Regina, who had been waiting for Tasha to wake up for several days in the hospital, suddenly asked Douglas in a murmuring voice when he brought her home to rest that day, "Would you be willing to have a baby with me?"
