Chapter 219 Regina, I'll Wait for You to Come Out

"Don't sweat it, Mrs. Semona, I got this."

Regina just nodded at Douglas and kept quiet.

Some things are better left unsaid; they both got that.

When Regina heard he was back at Semona Estate, she immediately asked if he had taken any videos and photos of the kids.

Douglas grinned, "Yep, got tons of photos and videos."

He wasn't kidding.

Regina grabbed his phone, and they plopped down on the couch to watch together.

Douglas knew Regina missed the kids like crazy. She'd often wake up in the middle of the night, calling out Matt and Lily's names.

Whenever that happened, Douglas would take her back to Semona Estate to see them.

Regina loved holding Matt.

But one day, she felt dizzy and almost dropped Matt because she wasn't holding him tight enough.

Luckily, Douglas was right there and caught Matt in time.

Since then, Regina rarely visited Semona Estate to see Matt and Lily.

This incident just added to her worries.

Douglas knew how careful she was.

Hearing Matt and Lily crying in the video made Regina's heartache.

Douglas tried to comfort her, "It's okay, they're just hungry and looking for milk."

Regina felt guilty, like she was failing as a mom for not being there to feed them. Watching those videos and photos, her eyes welled up, but she said something that made Douglas chuckle, "When I get better, I want to hold Matt and Lily to sleep every night."

"What about me?" he teased, pretending to be jealous.

"The bed's big enough; we can all sleep together."

"But some things might be inconvenient."

Regina was puzzled at first, then it hit her what he meant.

"What do you think, Mrs. Semona?"

He smiled, a mix of affection and flirtation in his eyes.

Regina got lost in his gaze, unable to look away.

Later, Regina watched the videos of Matt and Lily over and over for almost two hours. Douglas, worried about her eyes, took the phone away, "Sweetie, let's call it a night. Go freshen up and get some rest."

Regina agreed, "Okay."

She went to the bathroom to freshen up, then lay on the bed and closed her eyes.

She didn't sleep at all that night, maybe because she had slept too much during the day or had too much on her mind. Neither did Douglas, who lay beside her. He had said they should rest early, but he couldn't sleep either.

In the long, silent darkness, time just slipped by.

The next day was Regina's surgery day.

Even though it was surgery day, they couldn't do it right away. They needed two days for tests and prep.

When Douglas came back from the doctor's office to the ward, he saw Regina sitting on the bed in loose hospital clothes, staring out the window.

The ward was on the second floor, and from her spot, she could see a lush, green tree outside, its branches spreading wide.

In early May, the sunlight was bright and warm, filtering through the leaves and casting dappled shadows, warm and healing.

Douglas hesitated for a moment, then took out his phone and snapped a photo of her in the light and shadow.

Douglas used to love snapping photos of Regina. People even called him her "personal photographer."

But lately, he hadn't been taking as many pictures.

He was avoiding certain things on purpose.

He didn't want to capture Regina looking weak and in pain.

He was trying to hold on to all the beautiful moments of her.

But honestly, he wanted to capture every moment of her life.

After taking the photo, Douglas walked over to her.

"The doctor said the test results look good."

They'd been hitting the hospital almost every two or three days recently.

The thing in Regina's brain hadn't gotten worse.

"They just need to do a minimally invasive surgery to remove it. Don't worry."

Regina looked at Douglas, listening to him go on and on.

But he was really just saying one thing: Don't be scared, everything will be fine.

Regina leaned over, wrapped her arms around Douglas's neck, and shut him up with a kiss.

She kissed him for a long time, then comforted him, "I know, honey. Don't be nervous, don't worry, okay?"

Douglas laughed at himself.

At that moment, he seemed to have less courage than she did.

In the afternoon, the Semona family showed up.

Luckily, the ward was big enough; otherwise, it would've been a tight squeeze.

To Regina's surprise and delight, Matt and Lily were there too.

Seeing the two adorable kids so close, Regina felt an urge to hold them but was also scared.

Douglas saw what she was thinking and took Matt and Lily from the nanny, placing them on the bed.

This way, Regina didn't have to worry about dropping them and could still be close to them.

Kids grew up so fast. They were just a month old, but you could already see bits of Douglas and Regina in their faces.

Regina touched their little hands and feet like they were precious treasures.

As she played with them, she noticed everyone watching her and felt a bit embarrassed.

She then handed Matt and Lily back to the nanny.

"It's not good for them to stay in the ward all the time. I'll play with them when I get better."

Hearing this, the family felt a pang of sadness.

They stayed in the ward for a while, keeping Regina company, and then left at Douglas's suggestion.

The next day, Regina continued with pre-surgery tests and preparations with Douglas by her side.

Douglas felt a pang in his heart as he watched the needle pierce Regina's skin.

She had been through childbirth, various medications, injections, blood tests, and exams.

Sometimes Douglas wished he could take all her pain upon himself.

He would endure it a hundredfold, a thousandfold.

After all the prep was done, at 2:30 PM, Regina was set to go into surgery.

As Regina was about to be wheeled into the operating room, Douglas bent down, held her hand tightly, and said in a hoarse voice, "Regina, I'll be waiting for you."

He also said, "You still have a lot of evidence to find. Come out safely, and we'll keep searching."

The "evidence" Douglas mentioned was about his secret love for her.

Regina had once enjoyed digging for it like a treasure hunt, but there was so much evidence.

She thought she would need a lifetime to discover just how much he loved her.
