Chapter 135 Seeking Thrills
Sandra still didn't believe it!
But now her throat felt like it was being fiercely gripped by a hand. She opened her lips, but no sound came out.
In that moment of her silence, Regina faintly heard a muffled sobbing beside Sandra.
Regina's tone, devoid of any discernible emotion, responded to Sandra by saying, "Save your energy and thoughts. Don't waste them on me. You have your own matters to attend to now."
With that, before Sandra could respond, Regina directly hung up the phone, turned it off, and put it in her bag.
The whole action was done with swift precision.
However, her thoughts were like an old, jammed machine.
She stiffly raised her head, paused for a long time, and then asked Douglas, "Why are you here?"
This was likely the first time Douglas had visited her office since she began working.
Fortunately, everyone had left by now.
Of course, Douglas knew no one would pass by, which was why he came in. Otherwise, he wouldn't do something that would put her in an awkward position.
Douglas tried to glean something from her eyes.
However, her eyes betrayed a tumultuous mix of emotions, entangled like a complex web.
He didn't say much or ask many questions, just held her hand and led her out of the office.
"Work's over, Mrs. Semona. Come home with me?"
'Come home.'
Those two words seemed to have a special magic, instantly warming Regina. She gently held his hand, following him through the private elevator passage, entering the underground parking lot without being noticed.
On the way home, Regina remained quiet.
She kept her head turned, looking out the window, appearing lost in thought.
Douglas tapped the steering wheel thoughtfully and, after a while, finally asked her, "What are you thinking about?"
"I'm thinking how Melissa got cancer. It seems like there's no such hereditary disease in her family for generations." Regina seemed to be talking to herself yet also replying to him. "That family provided her with a privileged living environment. She had multiple check-ups every year, went to the hospital at the slightest discomfort, had the best doctors, and spent a lot on her health. So why did she let the disease progress to the late stage?"
Late-stage cancer was basically a death sentence.
Regina slightly smiled, but the smile carried a hint of mockery. "She prided herself on being so smart, yet she let herself end up in such a pitiful state. She meticulously planned every step, but she ended up in a situation she never anticipated."
To Regina, Melissa was always a thorn in her flesh, never removed all these years.
"Do you want to see her?" Douglas always respected Regina's choices. "If you don't want to, no one can make you. If you do, I'll go with you."
Regina shook her head. At that moment, her mind was indeed in turmoil. She said, "I haven't figured it out yet."
Douglas didn't ask any more questions.
Back home, Regina sat silently on the couch.
Molly circled her feet with a toy in its mouth. Typically, Regina would pet its head and engage in play. However, at present, nothing seemed to pique her interest or captivate her attention.
Douglas sat down beside her on the couch and kissed her on the lips.
Regina knew she was acting unusually, which would surely worry him. She forced a smile, trying to explain.
However, unexpectedly, Douglas interrupted her, "You don't need to say anything now. I understand your emotions. But when people are upset, they can't always keep it bottled up. Sometimes, if emotions are suppressed for too long, it can lead to physical problems, just like... your mom."
Regina thought that made sense.
However, Regina never really knew how to vent her emotions.
The following day, Douglas didn't go to work but took her directly to a large outdoor theme park.
There were nearly a hundred entertainment projects, thrilling and exciting.
Regina stood in the empty venue, feeling like she was in an unbelievable dream.
"You... you booked the whole place?" she asked.
Douglas nodded slightly.
"If you want to cry, cry. If you want to laugh, laugh. You can also scream and shout, as long as it makes you feel better."
Regina was amused by Douglas's demeanor. The emotions she had held in all night were indeed momentarily relieved.
Douglas asked her, "Which one do you want to try first?"
Regina casually scanned the vast venue and immediately spotted the roller coaster that reached a height of 490 feet.
This was the tallest roller coaster in the country.
She pointed at the roller coaster. "I want to try that one first."
Douglas raised an eyebrow in slight surprise. "Are you sure? It's very high. I heard from the staff that out of ten people who go on it, five might throw up. It could be a bit physically uncomfortable."
But Regina was determined.
Douglas called the staff to help with the equipment. As Regina sat down, Douglas immediately sat beside her.
Regina looked slightly surprised. "You're going to ride with me?"
Douglas asked back, "Can't I?"
Realizing this, Regina smiled contentedly.
After the staff checked the equipment, it started moving, climbing to the highest peak. Regina's heart, involuntarily, also rose bit by bit.
Finally, the roller coaster reached its highest point.
Regina opened her eyes, looking up at the blue sky above. On a summer morning, the sunlight was dazzling. She slightly frowned, stretching out her hand, feeling like she could touch the sky.
She silently counted to three in her heart, and the roller coaster plunged down from 490 feet high like a bird with broken wings!
The experience was incredibly frightening, leaving Regina with the overwhelming sensation that it was the closest she had ever come to death.
She finally screamed, and all the pent-up emotions in her heart seemed to pour out at that moment.
The roller coaster rose and fell, dropping from the highest point and then rushing back up without any buffer, only to fall again.
After one round, Regina felt a bit weak, but she also felt an unprecedented sense of relief.
Regina appeared to be in high spirits, eagerly trying out one thrilling activity after another, from riding the pirate ship to experiencing the thrill of the giant swing and even bungee jumping.
Whatever was thrilling, she tried it.
No matter what, Douglas stayed by her side the whole time.
Meanwhile, on the other side, Sandra was very anxious as she couldn't reach Regina by phone.
She paced restlessly in Melissa's hospital room.
"She works at the Century Group. How did she become the wife of the Century Group's president?" Sandra sneered, her face twisted with uncontrollable anger. "This is probably fake, fake!"
Despite the fact that the marriage of the president of the Century Group was no longer a secret, he remained remarkably low-key, keeping his new wife concealed to such an extent that even individuals within the company had never caught a glimpse of her. If Regina had really married Douglas, how could there be no reaction or any hint of it within the company?
Sandra suddenly recalled what Regina had said yesterday. She mentioned Philip, implying that Philip knew about her marriage and who she married.
But what kind of relationship did Regina have with Philip?
How could Regina and Philip have such a relationship!
Sandra instinctively wanted to pick up her phone to call Philip, but then she remembered that her number had long been blocked by him.
Sandra didn't know what Philip's intentions were when he approached her initially; she only knew that when he dumped her, he didn't even say a word.
He just disappeared from her world like that.
As Sandra was about to make a fuss, she heard a soft sigh. Melissa, pale-faced, sat on the hospital bed, watching Sandra's agitation, and felt a growing sense of irritation.
"Sandra..." Melissa said softly. "Can you calm down a bit? Don't disturb your sister, and don't go looking for Philip anymore. I think Philip... is not someone you can handle. You need to be careful."
Hearing this, Sandra was displeased.
"Mom, do you know what Philip's status is now? He owns the entire Heyday Group! You know how prestigious the Heyday Group is in New York, right? If I could marry him, I wouldn't have to live in fear anymore."
Growing up spoiled by Melissa, Sandra had developed a proud yet naive personality.
Melissa, with red-rimmed eyes, looked at Sandra, wondering how she would survive after she was gone.
After thinking for a long time, Melissa changed the subject. "Sandra, I've thought about it for a long time, and I want to tell you something."
"What is it?"
"I want a divorce."
"What?" Sandra thought she was hearing things. "Mom, why would you suddenly say something so absurd? You're in this condition. Why would you want to divorce David? If you divorce him, we'll have nothing left!"
All these years, they had been living off David.
David had provided them with a privileged life, but if Melissa divorced him, according to their previous agreement, she would have to give up all the Greenwood family assets. She wouldn't be able to rely on the Greenwood family anymore.
Sandra was very clear about this. Despite David's less than favorable treatment towards her, she had nevertheless reaped significant benefits from her association with the esteemed Greenwood family and its reputation over the years.
Seeing Sandra's stubbornness, Melissa closed her eyes in despair. With a hoarse voice, she said with difficulty, "Over the years, I've saved a lot of money. The cash, jewelry, and other assets add up to millions of dollars. Plus, I started investing five years ago, and I plan to sell those investments for cash. All of this will be yours. You'll be wealthier than 80% of the people in this world. Even without the Greenwood family, you can live a good life. But if I die and you stay with the Greenwood family, I won't be at ease."
Melissa had always known that David didn't care much for Sandra.
She also knew that in David's eyes, Sandra was just a tool for gaining benefits.
Since Sandra was eighteen, David had taken her to various banquets and social events.
Later, when she was twenty and still in college, David was already planning a marriage alliance.
If it weren't for Regina's agreement, Sandra might have really married Vitas, that cripple, just because David thought they could gain more benefits through an alliance with the Johnson family.
Sandra's happiness, even her life, didn't matter to David.
Thinking of this, Melissa felt even more burdened.
Melissa believed that only by divorcing David and severing ties with the Greenwood family could Sandra escape from David.
Moreover, Sandra was very reckless. Staying with the Greenwood family, she would eventually upset David, making her life very difficult.
So, cutting ties was the best solution.
But Sandra wasn't focused on this matter now.
In any case, she wouldn't allow Melissa to divorce David.
"No, the urgent thing now is to find Philip and clarify Regina's situation."
To Sandra, Regina was at most a mistress of a rich old man. How could she be the wife of the president of the Century Group?
This matter was like a hook, constantly nagging at Sandra, making her restless.
Melissa's eyes showed a hint of gloom and disbelief. "Is this really your urgent matter?"
Sandra instinctively replied, "Sure. Mom, didn't you hear her gloating on the phone? If this is true, will I have to live under her shadow for the rest of my life?"
Melissa sighed. "You know what kind of person Regina is. If you don't bother her, she won't bother you."
But Sandra still felt uneasy.
She had been comparing herself to Regina for twenty years.
For as long as she could recall, she had been constantly comparing herself to Regina.
She wanted to live better than Regina, to have more than Regina.
Sandra clenched her palm, forcing herself to focus.
She looked at Melissa, whose eyes were red, and realized her earlier overreaction. She knelt by the bed, tears streaming down. "I'm sorry, Mom. I know you've always spoiled and protected me. Your illness makes me feel terrible, like my world is collapsing. Please take care of yourself and follow the treatment. We have money and the best doctors and medical equipment. Maybe a miracle will happen. I hope you can stay with me."
Melissa remained silent, lying on the bed with her eyes closed, offering no further words.
Sandra stayed at the hospital for half a day before leaving.
She went to the Heyday Group building, told the receptionist she wanted to see Philip, and mentioned it was about Regina.
She thought Philip wouldn't see her, but to her surprise, after the receptionist reported to Philip, she was directly taken to his office.
