Chapter 218 Praying to God

Elizabeth didn't stay surprised for long; she quickly pulled herself together.

Right then, it was clear what Douglas was up to.

Douglas headed to the church Elizabeth often visited.

That day, he knelt there, praying hard for some divine help.

He just wanted his love to be safe, always.

Regina wasn't feeling great that day; she spent the whole day in bed, half-asleep.

When she finally woke up in the evening, the first thing she saw was Emily's worried face.

"Mrs. Semona, you're awake! Hungry?"

Regina took a moment, her head down, before she remembered, "Where's Douglas?"

When her memory was sharp, she was always close to Douglas.

Emily quickly said, "Mr. Semona had to step out for something today."

"When's he coming back?"

"Uh... not sure."

As Regina hesitated, she heard the click of high heels.

It was Nicole.

Lately, Douglas had moved Regina away from the Semona Estate to keep things quiet for her. Nicole didn't visit much, but with Regina going to the hospital tomorrow, everyone was worried. They didn't want too many visitors to stress her out, so they sent Nicole to check in.

"Regina." Nicole attempted a smile, but it came across more as a precursor to tears.

Regina recognized Nicole. She got out of bed and walked over, "Nicole."

Nicole noticed Regina's hesitation. "What's up, Regina?"

Regina asked carefully, "Do you know where Douglas went?"

Nicole let out a small "oh," "He's at the Semona Estate right now."

"What's he doing there?"

Nicole sighed to herself.

Douglas was still kneeling in the church.

Nicole knew her brother well. He used to be all about logic and never believed in this stuff, but today he seemed desperate.

Nicole wanted to tell the truth but didn't want to worry Regina, so she made something up, "Oh, Grandpa needed to talk to him."

Nicole glanced at her watch. "He should be back in an hour or two."

Hearing this, Regina felt a bit better.

"Nicole, you probably haven't had dinner yet, right? Want to eat together?"

"Sure." Nicole finally smiled, "I skipped dinner just to come here and snag a meal. I know the chefs here are amazing."

Douglas had gone all out to make sure Regina ate well. They had several chefs, and every meal was made just the way she liked it.

Nicole sat down at the table, eating and joking, "Regina, who's better, the chef or Douglas?"

Nicole was genuinely shocked when she first heard Douglas could cook, but later she found out he had learned a few dishes Regina liked, and it made sense.

Regina naturally replied, "I like Douglas's cooking best."

Nicole felt like the sweetness was almost too much to handle.

Everyone knew Regina's illness came with severe memory loss. They said she'd forget a lot of things and people. Sure, she had her moments, but most of the time, she still remembered everything about Douglas.

It had to be true love, so deep that she fought against those uncontrollable factors.

Thinking about this, Nicole, as an onlooker, couldn't help but feel a bit sad.

During dinner, they had endless things to chat about.

Since she got sick, Regina had moved from the Semona Estate to a big flat and then to this villa on Springfield Road. Her favorite thing to do was chat with the people around her.

She loved hearing 'old stories' from them.

Like today, she heard a bunch of stories about her and Douglas from Nicole, some of which she remembered clearly while others were a bit fuzzy.

No matter what, she listened closely.

Then, she slowly put them into her mind and started to recall them.

Her thoughts gradually became more active.

Just then, Douglas came back.

Regina turned to look at him.

Their hearts were full of emotions, but on the outside, they were as calm as a still lake.

Regina walked up to him and asked softly, "Have you eaten?"

"I have."

Actually, he hadn't eaten much in the past two days because he had no appetite.

At that moment, Nicole felt like a third wheel. She stuffed a delicious piece of fried chicken into her mouth, wiped her mouth clean, and quickly stood up, "I'm full. I'll head out now. Tomorrow..."

Nicole had a lot to say about Regina's surgery tomorrow, but she swallowed her words and just smiled at Regina, "Regina, see you tomorrow. Everything will go well."

"See you tomorrow."

Regina smiled back, showing no signs of worry on her face.

When Nicole was completely out of sight, Regina hugged Douglas tightly, burying her head in his broad, warm chest, listening to his strong and steady heartbeat.

That heartbeat always made her feel alive again.

"I might have slept a bit too long today. When I woke up and didn't see you, I got a little nervous."

"Sorry." Douglas lowered his head slightly and kissed her forehead lovingly. "I'll stay by your side from now on, so you can see me as soon as you open your eyes, okay?"

Regina chuckled, "That's not very realistic."

Douglas was about to say something when she continued, "Your life doesn't revolve around just me. You have so many family members, you have two kids, you have work. Your world doesn't revolve around just me, you..."

There was one more sentence she didn't finish, but Douglas already knew what she wanted to say.
