Chapter 45 Do Something Else?
It took three hours to fly from Norman to Oriant. When the plane landed at Oriant Airport, it was already past ten in the evening.
Miranda yawned, getting ready to say goodbye to Regina, "Regina, I'm heading back now. I'm exhausted, and I have to get up early for work tomorrow."
"Alright, take care."
After Miranda got into the pre-booked ride-hailing car, Regina went to find Douglas. The discreet black Maybach was parked in a not-so-prominent spot, but Regina spotted it immediately. She opened the back door, and as soon as she sat down, she heard the man beside her ask, "We go to your place tonight?"
Regina thought for a moment. It was already quite late, and going back to her apartment from the airport would save her a few dozen minutes compared to going to Douglas's place. So, it wouldn't be a bad idea to spend the night at her place first, she agreed, "Sure."
Although she didn't visit this apartment often, Regina had a maid service to keep it clean. As they entered, Douglas instinctively headed to the guest room he had stayed in before, but to his surprise, it was filled with neatly stacked belongings. Regina, who followed him, also felt a bit uneasy at the sight.
She's so forgetful! 'I have forgotten something again,' Regina realized.
Last time, she had been organizing the things Philip gave her at home, and they ended up filling the entire guest room. She had intended to find time to have someone return these items to Philip, but her busy work schedule and infrequent visits to this place caused her to forget about it.
As a result, only the main bedroom was available for use. "Why don't you sleep in the main bedroom?"
Douglas's gaze fell upon the room filled with gifts, and instead of answering her question, he asked coldly, "Are these gifts from your ex?"
Regina looked up, and suddenly their eyes met. For some reason, her heart trembled slightly. After a brief struggle, she admitted, "Yes."
His voice betrayed no emotion. "There are quite a lot of gifts."
"I'll get rid of them right away," Regina explained hastily. "I sorted these things out to return them to him."
However, her explanation failed to soften Douglas's expression. Philip was generous with women, so it wasn't surprising that he gave her so many things. What made him feel uneasy was that initially, when he asked her to bring some fruit and cake to his office, she seemed reluctant. Later, although he tried his best to give Regina some gifts, she reluctantly accepted them. And even if she accepted those gifts, she hardly used them. Or perhaps she had already made up her mind to return all the gifts he gave her in the future. In her heart, he was no different from her ex.
No, he couldn't compare to that man.
After all, she had spent six years with Philip, while he had always been invisible to her.
Seeing him silent, Regina felt a chill beside her.
Douglas brushed past her, left the room, and sat on the sofa. Regina quickly followed. Douglas glanced at her, took out a cigarette and a lighter, but didn't light it. "Go back to your room and rest."
"What about you?"
"I'll sleep on the sofa."
Regina didn't know how to respond. His mood was clearly not good. Regina felt a bit annoyed, blaming herself for not getting rid of Philip's things in time. She wanted to say something, but seeing that Douglas didn't seem to want to talk to her, Regina silently returned to her room.
After a while, she brought him a blanket. Douglas looked at the thick, soft, light pink blanket and found it somewhat amusing.
Regina cautiously tried to gauge his expression. Was there something he was dissatisfied with? Regina didn't ask. She thought for a moment and then went back to her room. She remembered that Douglas hadn't eaten much today, so she thought about making something for him. However, since no one had stayed here for a long time, the only thing she could make with the available ingredients was spaghetti.
Soon, Regina made a large portion of spaghetti. Douglas could see her clumsy and polite attempt to please him. "I remember I made spaghetti for you once, and you said you liked it."
"I do like it, so you made it for me?"
"Yes." Regina thought for a moment and then added in a soft voice, "I can cook other dishes too, but there are no ingredients here. What else do you like to eat? I'll make it for you next time."
"Forget about cooking. You're better with something else."
Something else? Regina wondered what else she could do. Watching her rack her brains, Douglas unbuttoned a few shirt buttons, feeling somewhat relieved. Well, she clearly had no such intentions. Or perhaps she simply didn't know that every time he looked at her, he wanted to sleep with her.
Regina saw him start eating the spaghetti and didn't speak to her again, so she eventually turned and went back to her bedroom. She knew she had to get rid of the annoying things in the guest room as soon as possible. Douglas must have been upset because of those things.
Regina contacted a moving company online. On Saturday, she deliberately returned to her apartment. After checking, she and the movers put everything Philip had given her onto the truck.
When Philip received the truckload of things, his temples throbbed hard. He changed to a new phone number and called Regina. Before Regina could say anything, she heard his question, "Who told you to return these gifts?"
"You said you wanted to settle things. Those are all your things; I'm just returning them. If you find them bothersome, it's up to you how you deal with them after receiving them."
Philip was silent for two seconds.
When he spoke again, his tone was relatively calm. "It's no fun if you continue like this."
Regina didn't care. "Aren't you already tired of it? I thought we had nothing between us a long time ago."
Six years was indeed a long time, but the disappearance of her love was definitely not overnight. For a brief moment, Philip was left speechless by her words. He also felt that if he took back these gifts, he would never be able to control her again.
In fact, Philip had realized that he had never truly controlled Regina. Over these six years, he seemed to be in a dominant position, but that was only because she still loved him. But what if she gave up this relationship? Then, in her eyes, he would be nothing.
As she hung up the call, Philip's face darkened.
"Mars!"
"Yes?"
"Go and burn all these things!"
Mars fell silent.
Philip, feeling annoyed, drove to the Peace Club. Everyone could see that he was in a bad mood. Ever since the argument with Regina at the birthday party, he had been like a ticking time bomb.
As soon as he entered the private room, he sat there just scrolling on his phone.
Although Regina had already unfriended him, he could still see all their previous chat records. He kept scrolling through them, and suddenly, he felt that her love for him seemed like a mere illusion.
