Chapter 229 His Love was Always Unconditional

Their married life was simple, fulfilling, and happy.

Regina quit her job at Century Group to focus on studying for her exams.

"Sorry," Regina said to Douglas, feeling a bit awkward. "I went for the executive assistant job while I was pregnant, and then I quit after getting it. I'm sorry for the trouble it caused."

"Mrs. Semona, what are you talking about?"

Douglas always tried to see things from her point of view. "Going for that job was the best choice for you at the time. You earned it fair and square and didn't step on anyone's toes, so there's no need to apologize. You didn't cause me any trouble."

He paused, thinking back to when she was his assistant, and laughed softly. "Those were the best days I've had at work in years."

"You've given me so much, not just at work, but in life and emotionally. I should be the one thanking you."

Regina felt like no matter what she did, it was always right in Douglas's eyes.

His love was always unconditional.

She smiled and didn't say anything more.

The Saturday morning sun streamed through the study window, illuminating them as they each worked in their own quiet corner. They worked until Matt and Lily woke up, then they both stopped what they were doing and went to the nursery.

In February, Regina and Douglas went to Norway for their honeymoon.

This time, they left Matt and Lily at home.

Their time together was filled with endless lovemaking.

During that time, Regina felt a bit anxious.

Even though Douglas took all the necessary precautions, Regina couldn't help but worry about getting pregnant.

Luckily, her period came after the honeymoon.

Douglas told her they wouldn't have any more kids.

Regina asked, "What if there's an accident?"

Before she could finish, he interrupted, "There won't be."

At the time, Regina didn't get why he was so sure, but the day after they got back, he had a vasectomy.

In March, Douglas had a new project in Kensington. It was a big deal, so he had to travel back and forth between the country and abroad for a while.

Since he and Regina had been together, they hadn't been apart like this for a long time, and the longest separation lasted up to half a month.

When they couldn't see each other, they could only video chat.

Matt and Lily would lean in front of the camera, looking at Douglas with joy and calling out to him.

Throughout March, they could count the number of times they met on one hand. Luckily, Douglas made it back in time for Matt and Lily's first birthday party.

Regina watched her kids grow up day by day, and her heart melted with their cuteness.

In April, Regina kept preparing for her entry into the State Department.

She was already well-prepared.

In May, Regina went to the hospital for a one-year post-surgery check-up.

Time flew by so fast!

When she got the healthy check-up report from the doctor, she felt a bit dazed.

She knew it was a feeling of lingering fear.

She knew that because her current life was so wonderful, she feared death, but she feared even more that she would forget Douglas again.

That would be more painful than death.

Time moved forward at a steady pace.

In August, something happened that Regina didn't really want to talk about but had a big impact on her.

She ran into Philip at a restaurant.

That day, Regina had plans to have dinner with Miranda.

Since quitting her job at Century Group, she had been swamped with exam prep and the kids, she hadn't seen Miranda in ages. Regina picked a restaurant she loved, saying she wanted to have a great meal with Miranda.

The place served authentic Oriant City food and was close to the apartment where Regina used to live.

Regina confidently told Miranda, "We have similar tastes, and you'll definitely love the food here. When I lived around here, I used to eat here all the time when I was busy."

They chatted and laughed.

After not seeing each other for so long, Regina thought it would be a fun catch-up, but she didn't expect to see Philip walk in shortly after they got there.

His eyes locked onto her.

Regina thought, 'How could this be such a crazy coincidence?'

But Mars, who was with Philip, felt like it was fate.

Philip had been coming to this restaurant every day for a month, and finally, he ran into Regina.

After breaking up with Regina, Philip started to constantly search for memories of their past and make them tangible.

He kept two dogs at home, a Golden Retriever and a Border Collie.

The Border Collie was a stray dog he found on the street. It had a broken leg and hadn't been bathed for a long time. Its fur was so long it covered its eyes, and it was scared of everyone, trembling in a corner of the house.

Strangely enough, despite his worsening mental health and inability to control his emotions, Philip managed to calm down the highly alert and wary stray dog that day.

Of course, this wasn't the only strange thing Philip did during that time.

For instance, his daily visits to this restaurant for a month puzzled Mars at first.

Not only did he come often, but he also ordered the same dishes every time. Mars, his companion, ate the same dishes so many times that he felt nauseous just looking at them.

After some thought, Mars suddenly remembered that this was Regina's favorite restaurant, and those dishes were her favorite signature dishes.

He also recalled that she once invited Philip to have dinner at this restaurant on her birthday. Philip initially agreed, but something came up at the company, and Edward dumped a big problem on him. If he didn't handle it that day, he would be punished by the biased William.

Philip was so busy that he didn't even realize his phone was off. By the time he finished, it was already past nine in the evening, and he finally remembered to check his phone.

She had called him ten times, but he hadn't answered.

When Philip called Regina back, she had already finished the entire meal and cake by herself.

It was as if she was punishing herself, stuffing food into her stomach non-stop, and when she got home, she vomited terribly.

The memory ended abruptly.

Mars looked at Regina, then at Philip, feeling a surge of complex emotions.

This long-awaited encounter made Regina lose her appetite.

Even though she had already ordered a table full of dishes, Regina wanted to tell Miranda to eat somewhere else tonight. But before she could say anything, Philip turned and left the restaurant.

However, not long after his car drove away, something happened.

A black SUV, driving in the wrong direction at over 80 miles per hour, crashed into his car.
