Chapter 208 Don't Want to Forget. Don't Want to Be Forgotten
Regina once scribbled in her diary about something growing in her brain that needed to be cut out. If not, it would get bigger, mess with her memory, and eventually kill her.
Surgery was always risky, especially brain surgery. If she made it through, she'd have a bright future ahead.
But if there was even the tiniest mistake, it would be just like she wrote in her diary: [If we wait until May, which is two months away, will the thing in my brain get bigger?]
"Mr. Semona, don't worry. Trust our evaluations and judgments. We chose this time to be cautious, not to take risks," the doctor said, eyeing Douglas's serious face.
He seemed to know what Douglas was thinking and, before Douglas could say anything, he promised, "I'll do everything I can to keep Mrs. Semona safe."
Douglas didn't relax one bit. "Thank you very much."
The doctor quickly replied, "It's our duty."
Saving lives was a doctor's job, and besides, Douglas had poured billions into the hospital.
The doctor knew that Douglas was doing this for Regina. He seemed to have no other options and was looking for peace of mind this way. Plus, Douglas hoped this money could help more people like Regina.
By the time they left the hospital, it was already noon.
In early spring, the sun was shining brightly. Douglas had Regina's favorite cheesecake ready. "Have a little to fill your stomach. I'll be back soon to make you something you like."
Maybe Douglas still looked pained and down in the doctor's office, but in Regina's eyes, he never showed any negative emotions.
He always looked at her with gentle affection, comforting her and taking care of her body and emotions with great attention.
Regina sat in the car eating the cheesecake. Halfway through, she scooped a spoonful and offered it to his mouth.
Douglas ate it without a second thought.
"Is it good?" Regina asked cautiously.
Douglas chuckled, and that laugh lightened the heavy vibe in the car. "You know the answer to that."
"The cake is delicious." He tapped the steering wheel lightly as he chatted with her casually, "Do you remember how you used to sit in the car and eat a cheesecake on your way home from work?"
At his words, a trace of subtle surprise flashed in Regina's eyes.
Douglas knew her memory of that might be getting fuzzy again.
While waiting at a red light, he took Regina's phone and scrolled through her posts, finding one from last year.
She was sitting in the car eating cake and had taken a picture of the cake. Besides that, Douglas's hand was also in the frame.
She had captioned the photo with: [Had my favorite cheesecake again. Today is great, hope tomorrow is too.]
Regina stared at the phone screen, looking at the photos and text, and fell into a long silence.
These happy moments weren't that long ago, but reality was too cruel. It seemed they hadn't had time to savor these moments before being forced ahead.
After a while, Regina suddenly seemed to wake up. She turned to look at Douglas in the driver's seat, and the previously furrowed brows seemed to have relaxed. "Yes, I remember!"
"Do you remember some other things between us?" Sometimes, he was like a teacher giving a pop quiz.
Regina had to answer his "test questions" every day.
The easy ones were about his name, age, and who he was. The harder ones were like what he was asking now.
Regina answered seriously. She thought for a long time before saying, "I remember, we went to Icy Island to see the aurora. And I attended Dougal's event at Norman University. My favorite radio drama is Dougal's 'Loving You for a Long Time,' and I even worked with him on the radio drama 'Post-Nuptial Passion.'"
Finally, she smiled sweetly. "I know you are Dougal."
"You are amazing."
At this praise, which sounded like it was for a kid, Regina lowered her head a bit shyly.
Douglas "tested" and "praised" her all the way, and both of them were happily caught up in this routine.
She didn't want to forget him. He didn't want to be forgotten by her.
That evening, Douglas took Regina back to the Semona Estate. After dinner, when Regina went to rest in her room, Douglas told everyone in the family about Regina's illness.
Upon hearing the news, everyone held their breath and didn't speak.
They all knew Douglas hadn't been to the company for a few days. At first, they thought he was staying home because he was worried Regina was about to give birth.
That seemed normal, and no one thought much of it. They didn't expect it would turn out to be something like this.
"How could you be so irresponsible?" Leo, who had just realized what happened, was so angry that his mustache was trembling. He sternly rebuked Douglas, "How many days has it been? Why are you only telling us now?"
What Leo didn't know was that if Douglas hadn't accidentally seen that diary, he might not have found out either.
Although Douglas had been lamenting the tricks of fate a moment ago, now he thought, 'Somehow I am still the favored one.'
He said self-deprecatingly, "Regina felt unwell a few days before the New Year and went for a check-up. Based on her condition, the doctor recommended surgery in May. She didn't want us to worry, so she planned to tell us after the baby was born."
"How could she be so kind?" At his words, Elizabeth's tears started to fall. "Does she know how important she is to our family right now? At this point, how could she still want to hide it?"
Everyone knew Regina's thoughts. She just didn't want them to be unhappy; she wanted them to be sad a little later. She hoped they could all happily await the birth of the children.
In her life, besides Tasha, Regina had never felt the warmth of family.
Fred's abandonment, Melissa's favoritism, and the ridicule and disdain from other relatives had trapped Regina in an inescapable quagmire since childhood.
It was the Semona family who pulled her out. So she cherished everything she had gained even more. She carefully maintained this relationship.
Maybe it was stubbornness, or maybe sensitivity and inferiority, but she didn't want to show a bad side of herself to them.
Leo's eyes also welled up. "Poor girl. Who knows what she went through to become so considerate."
Looking at the room full of solemn faces, Douglas frowned slightly. "Alright, don't be like this. If Regina sees it, she won't be happy either. She will get better."
