Chapter 234 Words he Would Regret for the Rest of his Life

"Mr. Sterling, come on, just take a bite?" Mars was practically begging, tears welling up in his eyes. He wasn't in great shape himself.

Philip had racked up a lot of enemies over the years. That car crash? No accident. It was revenge, plain and simple.

Mars had tried to dodge at the last second, but it was clear the car was gunning for them.

No way out.

Both of them ended up seriously hurt.

Mars had only just gotten back on his feet, barely able to walk around.

Philip looked at the cold food, then at Mars, who was standing by the bed looking pale. After a long pause, he finally said, "Leave."

Mars blinked, confused. "What?"

"Get out of here. Don't stick around me anymore."

Mars just stood there, stunned. Philip sneered, "That crash didn't mess up your brain, did it? You get what I'm saying, right? Stop following me."

"How many times do I have to say it? Get out!" Philip yelled again.

Mars's face shifted from shock to realization. In the end, he just gave a bitter smile.

Where could he even go?

He'd grown up in the Sterling family, right alongside Philip.

He'd always been by Philip's side.

Now, with Philip telling him to leave, he had no idea where to go.

"Mr. Sterling, this isn't the end. Why are you giving up?"

Philip cut him off, his face blank. "I've been stuck in this bed for months. My legs are useless. How do you expect me to move forward?"

Mars watched as the fire in Philip's eyes slowly died out.

It was replaced by exhaustion and apathy.

He seemed to have lost interest in everything.

When did this change start?

Mars thought about it and realized.

It was probably when Philip figured out that the only person who truly loved him, Regina, didn't anymore.

Philip and Regina were a lot alike.

Both had crappy families, dads who didn't care, and moms who didn't love them.

If Philip had learned how to love someone sooner, Regina could have been his light, his salvation.

But in the end, he cut the rope that could have pulled him out of the darkness.

Mars thought, 'Maybe they just weren't meant to be.

'Isn't there a saying? Opposites attract, but they were too similar in some ways.'

Mars glanced at the news playing on the hospital TV, then at Philip, who was staring at the screen. He knew that on such a quiet night, Philip was thinking about her again.

Yeah, he was thinking about her, and about the past.

Philip thought about that night a few years ago.

The first time he took Regina to a banquet.

It should have been a happy night, but William ruined it for him.

In a rage, he drove straight to the Peace Club.

Regina, worried, followed him.

That night, Philip drank a lot, and Regina couldn't stop him.

In the private room, the sound of breaking glasses was deafening.

Regina accidentally broke his glass.

In her panic, a few guys nearby came over with drinks, teasing her.

"No worries, you didn't mean to. Don't be scared. Philip's not that petty. Just have a drink and apologize."

Apologize?

Regina found it ridiculous.

She thought, 'I was just being nice to him. What's there to apologize?'

She stood there, not moving.

She must have thought Philip would stop this nonsense, but he just looked at her, frustrated.

His mind was stuck on William's warning that night.

William had told him to stay away from Regina.

William had told him to marry into the Brook family.

But Regina was still waiting for him to keep his promise of marriage.

Philip was distracted and didn't respond, so the guys took it as his approval and pressured Regina to drink.

They wanted her to drink because the drink was spiked with an aphrodisiac.

They thought, 'If Regina drinks it, wouldn't Philip be the one to enjoy it?'

They were just trying to have some fun.

But Philip didn't know the drink was spiked; otherwise, he would never have let her drink it.

Regina waited and waited, but he didn't speak up.

She wanted to leave, but they surrounded her, trapping her like a bird in a cage.

She stubbornly stood there, not moving.

No one knew how long it took, but Philip finally loosened the tie around his neck, unbuttoned three buttons from the top, and after doing all this slowly, he felt like he could finally breathe.

He looked at her and said, "I just had a few more drinks. Come here, don't be mad at me."

He seemed to be comforting her.

But at that moment, Regina suddenly felt very sad.

She would rather drink that glass of wine than walk towards him.

Philip watched her leave the private room but didn't chase after her.

He knew her anger wouldn't last, that she'd come back, just like she always did. The cycle of their fights, of her forgiveness, had become a weary routine.

Later, she did come back to find him, on his birthday.

She was very late.

Before she showed up, people started talking about her.

They asked him if he was going to marry her soon.

Philip felt a sharp pain in his heart.

He knew that as long as William was alive, as long as he didn't have control, he and Regina would never have a chance to get married.

That day, at his birthday party, countless eyes were on him, including the watchful gaze of those William had sent to keep tabs on him.

He knew that news of him taking Regina to the banquet a few days ago must have reached William and Edward.

So he couldn't afford to show any vulnerabilities that could be used against him.

He pretended to be indifferent, saying the words he would regret for the rest of his life, "I'm already tired of her. Life is long, I'm not crazy enough to marry a woman I'm tired of."

"I'm getting married, but Mrs. Sterling will never be her."

He looked into her eyes, and the words he said were like sharp knives, cutting into her already broken heart.

"You look a lot like her, but you'll never be her. After all these years, I still can't give you even a bit of love."

Watching her turn and leave, he still thought she would come back.

But this time, he had lost her for good.
