Chapter 131 I Shall Cherish And Honor My Own Mommy
"How can you say he's not? He totally is!" Isabella cut him off, her voice shaky with panic.
She quickly pulled Hugo behind her, glaring at Frederick with eyes that were red and ready for a fight if he tried to take her kid.
Frederick frowned, looking just as confused as he was annoyed.
Hugo, seeing Frederick's glare, wasn't having it.
He gave Isabella's clothes a little tug, trying to calm her down.
Then he stepped out from behind her, his tiny brows furrowed as he stared at Frederick.
This was only the second time Hugo had seen him, but he was already keeping his cool.
Besides being annoyed, he was also confused.
He was sure he had destroyed the surveillance footage, so what had Frederick seen?
Not sure what to do, Hugo decided to play it safe and just asked, "What?"
Frederick's focus shifted back to Hugo.
"The surveillance at home suddenly went out. Did you come downstairs by yourself just now?" he asked.
After they moved in, they had set up a bunch of cameras all over the place.
But when Frederick checked the footage, he found out someone had messed with their network, making all the cameras go offline.
So he couldn't find any trace of the mysterious man, nor did he know when Dennis went downstairs or why.
He had no clue if Dennis went down on his own, was taken by someone, or was led there.
Not knowing what was up, he rushed over to ask Dennis.
Isabella was taken aback, clearly surprised by his question.
Her tense nerves finally eased up, and she secretly gritted her teeth. She thought, 'Can't he just ask normally? I thought he had seen the footage and knew Hugo wasn't Dennis! I was scared to death just now!'
Hugo also relaxed his little fists and coldly replied, "I don't know how I went downstairs."
Frederick looked puzzled. "You don't know?"
"Yeah."
"How could you not know?"
"Why should I?!"
"You were awake the whole time; you should know how you went downstairs," Frederick said.
"Just because I was awake, I should know? You were awake too; why don't you know how, when, or why my mom left?" Hugo shot back.
Isabella was stunned.
Frederick frowned.
No one expected Hugo to say that.
The room went quiet for a moment, and Hugo coldly added, "I can't remember how I went downstairs, maybe I was sleepwalking."
Frederick stared at him for a few seconds. "You never sleepwalked before."
"That was in the past; the past doesn't always reflect the present."
"How is it that you, being perfectly fine now, would suddenly start sleepwalking?"
"I don't know. I said maybe I was sleepwalking; I'm not sure. Are you even listening to me?"
"I..."
Hugo cut him off, "If you have no other questions, just leave. I don't want to see you."
Frederick's brows furrowed tighter, his eyes filled with surprise and sadness. "Dennis, what's wrong with you tonight?"
"I'm fine."
"Fine?"
"What? Don't you want me to be fine?"
"No, Dennis..."
"Get out!" Hugo snapped, frowning and looking very unhappy.
Frederick looked at Dennis in disbelief.
Isabella also thought Hugo's words were a bit harsh and gently tugged at his clothes.
Hugo said, "You have the guts to be cold to a woman but not to find out what you want to know. That's all you are."
Frederick looked at Hugo in even more shock. Was this contempt? Did he think he was incompetent?
No father wanted to be anything less than a hero in their child's eyes! Frederick's heart was wounded!
He stared at Hugo for a few seconds, then turned and left. As soon as the door closed, he asked Elliot, "Did that man have any contact with Dennis?"
"I don't know. What's up with Dennis?" Elliot replied.
Frederick said, "He looked at me differently, and his tone was off."
"What do you mean?"
Dennis seemed to have some kind of grudge against him, speaking sharply and looking at him with a bit of defiance.
This wasn't like Dennis at all; it only started tonight.
Before, Dennis was distant and didn't talk much, but he loved, respected, and admired Frederick! He could feel it.
But tonight, Dennis was contradicting him at every turn, speaking disrespectfully and looking at him with contempt!
Something was definitely off tonight; there had to be a reason for this change.
Frederick couldn't imagine that the person talking to him wasn't Dennis at all. He thought Dennis's weird behavior tonight was connected to that mysterious man!
He suspected that the mysterious man had said something to Dennis!
Did he try to turn Dennis against him?
He had to find this guy and get to the bottom of it!
Frederick calmly said, "Expand the search area! He couldn't have just appeared in the community out of nowhere; there must be some trace! Also, check that dead cat again!"
"Yes!"
Inside Dennis's room.
Hugo held Isabella's small hand to comfort her, "Mom, you don't need to be scared of him. I'm here with you. Next time he glares at you, glare back. If he tries to intimidate you, stand your ground. If he insults you, don't hesitate to snap back."
Isabella cautiously asked, "Hugo, don't you like him?"
She could tell from Hugo's unfriendly tone when he spoke to Frederick just now.
Her Hugo had always been gentle, even polite to strangers, but he was really harsh to Frederick just now.
They had only met for the first time, and Hugo didn't know him, so he shouldn't have had this attitude.
Hugo answered, "I don't really like him."
"Why?"
"Because he glared at you. Of course, I wouldn't like him! And he's not a good dad or husband, so overall, he's not a good man."
Isabella's heart pounded as she asked, "Why do you feel that way? How do you know he's not a good dad or husband?"
"If he were a good dad, Dennis wouldn't be like this, and Dennis's mom wouldn't have left him."
Hugo only knew that Frederick was his dad but didn't know the relationship between Dennis and himself.
He thought Dennis was his half-brother.
So when he said 'Dennis's mom,' he wasn't referring to Isabella.
Isabella secretly swallowed and cautiously asked, "Hugo, aren't you curious why you look like him and Dennis?"
Hugo looked at Isabella with a complex expression, thinking about his response.
He knew his relationship with Frederick, but he didn't know if Isabella wanted him to know.
"Why?" Hugo pretended to know nothing.
Isabella quickly explained, "There's no reason, just that you look alike. You look alike, but there's no relation."
Hugo was silent. Whatever Isabella said was what it was.
'I shall cherish and honor my own mom!' Hugo thought.
"I got it. Everyone has a nose and two eyes; looking alike is normal."
Isabella secretly breathed a sigh of relief, "Yes, exactly."
'Silly mom,' Hugo sighed inwardly, then smiled and said, "It's almost dawn. We should get going. You should go wash up. Have faith in me; I'm awesome. I definitely won't slip up today!"
"Okay!" Hugo had dealt with Frederick twice now, both times smoothly, and Isabella was gradually feeling more at ease, not as nervous as before.
She smiled, pinched Hugo's little face affectionately, "Our Hugo is the best! I'll go make some food. Dennis usually gets up at six-thirty to wash up, but today is special. Just wait for me to call you."
"Okay!" Hugo nodded obediently, but as soon as Isabella left, his expression changed!
He quickly went to the window to look outside.
