Chapter 83 Not a Wife, But Someone You Couldn't Forget
"Keep an eye on Daniel," Frederick said.
Elliot raised an eyebrow. "Daniel? You think he's behind this? He knows Glen's connected to us. Would he really go that far?"
Frederick flicked his cigarette ash. "There's nothing he wouldn't do. If Glen crossed him, he might not just castrate him; he could even kill him."
"So, Isabella's his breaking point?"
Frederick frowned but stayed quiet.
Elliot was taken aback. "But Daniel and Isabella aren't that close. She's not even his wife."
"Not his wife, but maybe someone he can't get out of his head."
"Really? That doesn't add up. Everyone says Daniel's in love with Eleanor. They've been together since school, and they're married. Eleanor's the one he can't forget."
"It's the ones you can't have that stick with you. Once you're married, what's left to pine over?"
"True, but how did you figure out Daniel's into Isabella?"
"Just a hunch."
"A hunch? We've seen them together the same amount. How come I didn't pick up on that?"
"Because you're blind and dumb!"
Elliot went quiet.
Frederick's phone rang. It was John, the butler. When John called, it usually meant news from Dennis.
"What's up?" Frederick's face showed a flicker of worry.
John sounded almost tearfully happy. "Mr. Valdemar, Dennis asked for food! He said he wanted a bagel, just like the one this morning! And he asked when you could come back to make it for him?"
Frederick's mouth twitched.
Dennis asking for food was great news, really great!
But it was Isabella who made it!
Given Isabella's current attitude towards him, Frederick felt a headache coming on.
She wouldn't even look at him, let alone cook for Dennis!
Frederick said, "Just tell him I'm busy and might be back late. He'll have to eat something else for now."
After hanging up, Frederick immediately called Douglas. "Dennis wants Isabella's cooking. If you can't get her to make it, you're in trouble!"
Douglas was stunned. "What?"
Frederick hung up, leaving the problem with him.
Douglas called back, but Frederick ignored it.
When he called again, Frederick blocked him.
Douglas sighed and reluctantly called Elliot. "What's going on? What does this mean?"
Elliot awkwardly explained, "This morning, Isabella made breakfast for Dennis, and he loved it. John just called to say Dennis asked for food and wanted the same meal from this morning."
"What? Dennis asked for food? That's a big deal! It's a sign he's getting better! This is good news." Douglas was just as surprised.
"Yeah, exactly!"
"But hold on, shouldn't Frederick be happy? Why's he so pissed?"
Elliot went quiet. Douglas only caught that Dennis asked for food and missed the rest.
Elliot repeated, "Dennis wants Isabella's cooking. But she can't see Frederick right now, so you gotta figure something out."
Douglas finally got it, his eyes widening. "What am I supposed to do?"
"I have no idea."
"Your ex-girlfriend pissed off Isabella, making Frederick suffer. If it weren't for that, Frederick would've talked to Isabella himself."
Douglas fell silent.
After hanging up, he scratched his head again.
Isabella wouldn't even look at Frederick, so would she see Douglas?
If he went to find Isabella, would she just beat him up?
After all, Susan wasn't Frederick's ex; she was his!
"Great, just great. Do I look like an idiot? Getting screwed over by a woman!" Douglas muttered to himself.
He had to carefully figure out how to apologize to Isabella and convince her to cook for Dennis again.
If he couldn't persuade her, not only would Frederick be furious, but he wouldn't have the guts to face Dennis.
Dennis had finally asked for food, and because of him, he didn't get it.
How could he face him again?!
If he didn't handle this well, his conscience would eat at him!
But how to handle it well?
Douglas kept thinking but couldn't come up with a good solution.
So, he had no choice but to bite the bullet and bring a gift to find Isabella.
At that moment, Isabella was alone in the ward.
It was time for school to end, and Isabella had sent Freya to pick up the kids from kindergarten.
The police had just come to take a statement and had just left.
Seeing Douglas, Isabella instinctively frowned.
Douglas awkwardly smiled. "Hey."
Isabella looked at him warily, not saying a word.
Douglas awkwardly cleared his throat, put down the expensive gift, and sat by the hospital bed.
Like a kid who'd done something wrong, he said, "I'm really sorry about today. I didn't expect Susan to cause so much trouble! I was wrong, and I apologize."
Seeing his sincere attitude, Isabella's expression softened a bit.
It was Susan who messed up, not him. She had no reason to blame him.
Besides, Susan was just Douglas' ex, nothing more!
If Douglas thought this had nothing to do with him, she had nothing to say.
From a legal standpoint, this indeed had nothing to do with Douglas.
Moreover, she had something to discuss with Douglas.
Maybe she needed Douglas' help with her divorce from Frederick!
So, given Douglas' good attitude, Isabella also said, "This isn't your fault; it's Susan's."
