Chapter 146 I Will Be Good, Mommy Don't Go
Freya, Hugo, Justin, and Paul were still munching away in the living room when Isabella bolted to the door. While slipping on her shoes, she blurted out, "Dennis is downstairs. I'm gonna check on him. You guys keep eating. Boys, finish up and get ready for bed."
Before heading out, she shot Freya a look, silently asking her to keep an eye on the boys and make sure they didn't follow her downstairs.
Freya nodded, giving her a reassuring smile.
When Isabella got downstairs, she saw Dennis and Frederick standing in the pouring rain, and it threw her for a loop!
She'd rushed out without grabbing an umbrella.
So, she sprinted into the downpour and yanked Dennis into the foyer. With no towel in sight, she used her own clothes to dry his face and hair.
After wiping his face, she noticed Dennis was crying.
Isabella was stunned and asked, "Dennis, what's wrong?"
Dennis looked at her with tear-filled eyes, his lips quivering. He wanted to call out "Mommy," but he was too choked up to get the words out.
His lips moved, but no sound came out!
He stomped his feet in frustration, screaming 'Mommy' in his head over and over.
She was his mommy, the one he had been searching for, and missing for so long!
He had finally found her!
The emotions, deeper than the ocean and heavier than mountains, were all bottled up inside. So he could only let them out through his tears.
He cried so hard, turning into a sobbing mess.
Isabella was both heartbroken and shocked. She held Dennis tightly and looked at Frederick with a puzzled expression.
Frederick frowned, just as clueless as she was. He had no idea what was wrong with Dennis either!
Isabella could only hold Dennis patiently, comforting him like any mom would, walking around and gently saying, "Go ahead and cry, you'll feel better. I'm here."
Dennis clung to her neck, crying his heart out.
He had missed her so much, for what felt like forever!
He had finally found his mommy! He finally had a mommy!
Isabella's heart ached. As Dennis cried, she felt like crying too, her nose tingling and her eyes welling up.
At that moment, she even had the urge to take Dennis away from Frederick!
She wanted to be his mommy! She wanted to take care of him just like she took care of Hugo, Justin, and Paul!
She didn't know where these feelings came from, but she just liked Dennis, felt sorry for him, and couldn't let him go!
Unable to hold back, Isabella hugged Dennis tightly and started crying too.
The two of them cried together, while Frederick stood by, his brows furrowed, looking extremely conflicted!
He desperately wanted to know what was wrong with Dennis! Although Dennis liked Isabella, he shouldn't like her this much!
What was Dennis feeling so hurt about? What was he sad about? What was he so excited about?
After a long time, when he saw Dennis suddenly close his eyes and fall silent, he quickly asked, "What's wrong with Dennis?"
"Don't worry, he probably cried himself to sleep," said Isabella.
"Cried himself to sleep?"
"Yeah, it's from being too emotional."
Frederick fell silent.
Isabella, holding Dennis, asked him softly, "What exactly is wrong with Dennis?"
"I don't know. He suddenly said he missed you and wanted to find you."
"Why would he suddenly want to find me?" Isabella inquired.
"I'm not sure."
Isabella gave him a meaningful look.
Not daring to take Dennis home, Isabella could only say, "Let's take him home first. His clothes are all wet; he needs to go home and change."
"Okay." Frederick hesitated for a moment and then said, "Come home with us. I'm afraid he'll wake up suddenly and start looking for you again."
"Alright!" she agreed.
Isabella, holding Dennis, walked towards the car, and Frederick held an umbrella for them.
He held the umbrella over Isabella and Dennis, letting himself get soaked by the rain.
When they reached the car, he helped Isabella and Dennis inside, closed the door for them, and then folded the umbrella before hopping into the driver's seat.
Soon, the car drove away from the neighborhood.
In a dark corner, under a black umbrella, a shadowy figure watched Frederick and Isabella leave, his gaze sinister.
In the car, Isabella sent a message to Freya.
Isabella: [Dennis is acting strange tonight. I need to stay with him. Please take care of Hugo, Justin, and Paul for me.]
Freya quickly replied.
Freya: [Got it. Don't worry about them. I'll take care of them. You just focus on Dennis.]
Feeling reassured, Isabella sent a grateful emoji to Freya and put her phone away.
Dennis lay in her arms with his eyes closed, sobbing quietly the whole way. It was clear that he cried hard whenever he was awake.
When they got home, Frederick wanted to take Dennis from Isabella's arms.
After all, their building had no elevator, and he was worried Isabella wouldn't be able to carry Dennis up to the sixth floor.
But just as Dennis was about to leave Isabella's arms, he suddenly opened his eyes.
Sensing something, he looked panicked and clung tightly to Isabella's neck, crying out, "Mommy, hold me! Mommy, don't go!"
Isabella and Frederick were both stunned. Dennis called Isabella "Mommy"?
Dennis clung to Isabella's clothes as if afraid she would abandon him, looking both pitiful and humble. He cried, "I will be good. Mommy, don't go!"
Isabella's heart ached again. She thought Dennis just missed his mommy too much and mistook her for his own mommy.
Not wanting to contradict him, she went along with it, "Mommy won't go! Dennis, my dear, you're the sweetest. Sleep now, Mommy is holding you."
Only then did Dennis stop crying, nestling in her arms and sniffling softly.
Isabella comforted Dennis while carrying him towards the building, "Dennis, my dear, rest easy and sleep soundly. Mommy won't leave; Mommy is right here."
Frederick watched her back, his expression very complicated.
When they got home, Isabella laid Dennis on the bed, intending to get a basin of hot water to clean him up and change him into dry clothes.
But as soon as she moved, Dennis started crying again, repeatedly saying, "Mommy, don't go!"
Helplessly, Isabella had to lie down on Dennis's bed and direct Frederick to get the water.
After finally getting Dennis to sleep, Isabella angrily confronted Frederick.
She inquired, "Did you upset him?"
Frederick was sitting on the living room sofa, "No."
"Then why is he so upset?"
"I don't know."
"You're his father. How can you not know what's wrong with him?" questioning, Isabella was angry.
She knew he was a good father, but she couldn't help but accuse him.
Dennis's behavior was so unusual tonight; something must have happened. How could he, as a father, not know anything?
Frederick looked troubled but didn't lose his temper with Isabella.
He was deeply self-critical. Was he really such an unqualified father? Dennis was like this, and he remained entirely oblivious to the cause!
Isabella continued, "Dennis doesn't dislike me, but tonight he's super clingy with me, even more than he is with you, his real dad! He ran through the rain to find me; there must be a reason. You say you don't know anything, but I don't believe you!"
Frederick frowned deeply at her.
Isabella clenched her fists and furrowed her brows, remarking, "If you want me to help Dennis, you can't keep things from me! I need to know what happened to help him!"
Frederick stared at her for several seconds, then lit a cigarette.
After taking several puffs, he seemed to make a significant decision and finally spoke, "After you left, I went to find him and talked about some things from the past."
Isabella immediately asked, "What matter is it?"
