Chapter 143 Mommy is Gullible

Without giving them a chance to say anything else, Dennis had already shooed them out. "I need to sleep now, all of you get out!" he shouted.

Then he slammed the door and locked it from the inside.

After a moment of silence, making sure the three people outside had left, Dennis whispered, "You can come out now."

Hugo and Justin crawled out from under the bed.

As soon as Justin was out, he blurted, "In my heart, my mommy is the best in the world! Unmatched!"

Dennis frowned and shot back, "No way, my mom is the best!"

Hugo, rolling his eyes, quickly said, "Guys, stop it. Everyone thinks their own mom is the best. No need to get upset over it."

Dennis and Justin both furrowed their little brows and went quiet.

In their hearts, each of their moms was the best.

Hugo looked at Dennis with a gentle expression and asked, "Dennis, you know my mommy really cares about you, right?"

"Yeah."

"Good. So for her sake, can you keep this a secret? Don't tell her you know about us, don't mention we've met, and definitely don't bring up her and your dad."

Dennis looked puzzled, furrowing his brows. "Why?"

Hugo explained softly, "My mommy doesn't want us to know about her past with your dad, so let's pretend we don't. We don't want her to worry."

"Okay."

Seeing Dennis agree, Hugo smiled. "Let's exchange contact info. Even though we're not real brothers, it's kinda cool we look so alike. If you ever need anything, call me or Justin. We'll help if we can. We can be friends."

Friends? Dennis had never really had a friend before. The word felt strange to him.

Justin chimed in, "Even though we argued just now, the fact that you know my mommy is a good person shows you're not bad either. If you're ever feeling down, you can come to me. Blizzard and I can cheer you up!"

Kids were simple like that, arguing one moment and making up the next.

Dennis was a bit excited but wasn't good with words. He nodded solemnly and then took out his phone to exchange contact info with Hugo and Justin.

Hugo added, "Just to be safe, let's head out now. If Mom comes home and we're not here, she'll freak out."

Dennis replied, "Okay."

Hugo and Justin then left through the pipe.

Dennis stood by the window watching them until they were out of sight. He then quickly turned back to his computer desk.

He turned on the computer and started looking up information about Frederick and Isabella from back then.

In the study, Isabella was questioning Frederick, "How did Dennis know about the family memorial event?"

Frederick retorted, "He went today, didn't he? Shouldn't he know?"

Isabella was taken aback. But she retorted, "You said before that he didn't know."

"Didn't you hear Dennis explain? He said he forgot before but remembered now."

Isabella was anxious as she inquired, "Did you discuss what happened at the event with him?"

"No."

"Then how could he..." Isabella was going crazy. If Frederick didn't discuss it with Dennis, how did Dennis know?

Could it be that Hugo told him?

Did Hugo contact Dennis behind her back?

Elijah had just said he heard voices in Dennis's room. Could Hugo have come?

Isabella's heart was in her throat!

She left the study, not daring to knock on Dennis's door to ask him. She hid in the bathroom to call Hugo.

She didn't dare to video call Hugo here; she could only make a phone call.

Hugo and Justin had just left the neighborhood when Hugo said, "Mom's calling. Dennis spilled the beans about the family memorial, and now she's freaking out again."

"What do we do? If she finds out we met Dennis, she'll totally lose it!"

"Just keep it under wraps. Mom's pretty easy to fool," Hugo replied.

Hugo found a quiet spot to take the call, calmly saying he was at home.

Isabella asked nervously, "You're at home? But Dennis..."

"What about Dennis?"

Isabella lowered her voice, "Dennis's dad didn't tell him about the family memorial, but he knows all the details. Did you tell him?"

Hugo replied smoothly, "I didn't, but there were a lot of people at the event. Even if his dad didn't tell him, someone else might have."

"Someone else?" Isabella frowned.

"Yeah, like Elliot. He's always with Dennis's dad. He knows the details and gets along well with Dennis. He might've mentioned something."

Isabella thought for a moment and found it reasonable.

She had forgotten about Elliot. He was at the event today and knew the details.

Feeling a bit more at ease, Isabella said softly, "I get it. You, Justin, and Paul should go to bed. Mommy will be home soon."

"Okay."

After hanging up, Justin asked, "What if mom asks Elliot to confirm?"

Hugo answered, "She won't. Elliot's not around today. Even if he were, mom wouldn't ask. It'd be too obvious and make people suspicious."

"Do you think mom will call Freya to check if we're home?"

Hugo remained calm, smiling indulgently. "Doesn't matter. Freya's as gullible as mom."

Since Dennis was 'sleeping,' after a while, Isabella and Elijah left Sunnyvale Community.

Frederick was alone in the study, smoking like a chimney.

Dennis's condition had suddenly worsened, even showing signs of a split personality. Frederick was both worried and heartbroken.

And Elijah's earlier words had left him troubled. How did Dennis know about the time he accused his wife of infidelity and kicked her out? Did he think that his unknown wife was his mom?

Frederick's face darkened. After thinking for a while, he stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray and went to find Dennis.

He had to get to the bottom of this!

At that moment, Dennis was still glued to the computer screen.

He had found out everything about the past! It was exactly as Hugo had said!

He instantly understood why Justin had such hostility towards Frederick!

Seeing all the online hate against Isabella made him furious!

And the mastermind behind all this was his dad, Frederick!

No matter why he accused Isabella of infidelity, it led to widespread gossip about her because of him.

And because of him, Isabella's life was pushed into the abyss!

There was a knock on the door.

Frederick stood outside asking, "Dennis, are you asleep? If not, I need to talk to you. It's important."

Dennis frowned, glancing at the door.

After a moment of hesitation, he turned off the computer and got up to open the door.

Frederick looked at him with a complex expression, asking, "Can I come in?"

Dennis turned and went back inside, sitting on the chair by the window; the answer was obvious.

Frederick followed him in and sat opposite him.

Father and son stared at each other for a moment before Frederick spoke first, "Dennis, do you know about my divorce back then?"
