Chapter 68 Using Men, Forcing Men

The video call from her sons really cheered Isabella up, and right away, she thought of Frederick.

Running into Eric was just a fluke; Frederick was the real reason she came back.

Frederick had told her to leave him alone, but a quick call wouldn’t hurt, right?

She wasn’t going to be a bother!

Isabella took a deep breath and called Rose Garden again.

In a gentle voice, she asked, "Is Mr. Valdemar available for a divorce today?"

The response was still polite but firm.

"No, if he has time, Mr. Valdemar will contact you. Just wait for his call; there's no need to call him."

Then they hung up.

Isabella pouted. How long was she supposed to wait?

She still thought using Douglas to pressure Frederick was the best move.

But Douglas wasn’t easy to manipulate, so figuring out how to use him was the tricky part.

Isabella was still mulling it over when her phone rang. It was Daniel.

"Isabella, are you free today?"

Daniel sounded down.

"What's up?"

"If you're free, come to the hospital and help me talk to Laura Hall."

"Your cousin?"

"Yeah."

"What happened to her?"

"She tried to slit her wrists. Luckily, the nurse found her in time."

Isabella was shocked. "Because of the baby?"

"Maybe. I'm her cousin, but as a guy, I don't know how to console her. Eleanor isn't in Teronica, and I don't know who else to ask."

"Have you contacted Laura's family?"

"She won't let me. She said if I did, she'd jump off the building."

Isabella said, "I'm free today. I'll come over."

Daniel sounded relieved. "Okay, okay. Need me to pick you up?"

"No, you stay with Laura. I'll take a taxi."

After hanging up, Isabella frowned, deep in thought.

She had always been suspicious of Daniel's cousin Laura, and today was a good chance to see her.

Half an hour later, Isabella arrived at the hospital.

Daniel met her at the entrance.

"Why are you wearing so little? Aren't you cold?"

In her rush, Isabella had only worn a light down jacket, which did look a bit cold.

Daniel started to take off his coat to give to her.

A strange look flashed in Isabella's eyes, and she quickly refused.

"I'm fine. You wear it. How's your cousin?"

Daniel realized he was being too forward. Even close friends need some boundaries.

He put his coat back on, frowning.

"Since the surgery, she hasn't eaten or drunk anything and has tried to kill herself twice. Now, a caregiver is watching her constantly."

"Is Laura depressed?" Isabella wondered.

Many women suffered from postpartum depression. Although Laura hadn't given birth, her problem was more severe. An early abortion usually had less impact, as the child wasn't fully formed, and the emotional bond wasn't strong yet.

But an abortion after more than five months was a significant blow, both physically and emotionally.

Daniel shook his head. "Not sure yet. I'll have the doctor check on her later."

"Okay."

They headed to the ward. The single room was clean and bright.

Laura, in a hospital gown, lay on the bed staring out the window, with a caregiver quietly by her side.

Seeing them, the caregiver stood up. "Mr. Martinez."

Daniel nodded. "You can take a break. We'll watch her."

"Okay."

The caregiver left.

Laura turned her head, and her expression changed immediately upon seeing Isabella, like she had seen an enemy.

She pursed her lips, frowned, and her breathing quickened.

"Laura!" Daniel said, displeased with her attitude.

Laura looked at Daniel, bit her lip, and looked hurt.

Daniel said, "I called Isabella over. She's here to keep you company."

Laura looked at Isabella again, less hostile but still not friendly.

This time, she only glanced at Isabella before looking away.

Isabella grew more suspicious.

Women were sensitive, and Laura's hostility seemed deep-rooted. But Isabella didn't know Laura, so where did this come from?

Isabella intended to find out.

"Daniel, you should go out. Let me talk to her alone."

Daniel nodded. "Okay. You haven't had breakfast yet, right? I'll get you something."

"Okay."

Before leaving, Daniel glanced at Laura, his expression intriguing.

Isabella pulled up a chair and sat by the bed, getting straight to the point.

"Did you know me before?"

"No."

"Did I offend you?"

Laura bit her lip and looked at her, eyes red.

"Your expression says I did, but I don't know the specifics. I don't know you, and I've never met you. Did you mistake me for someone else, or is there a misunderstanding?"

Laura bit her lip and suddenly said, "I'd recognize you even if you turned to ashes."

Isabella said, "Then it's not a mistake. But I really can't remember. Can you give me more details?"

Laura fell silent again.

Isabella didn't get angry. "I'm Eleanor's best friend and Daniel's classmate. They know what kind of person I am. I wouldn't bully someone for no reason."

"Are you saying I'm falsely accusing you?!" Laura interrupted angrily.

Isabella shook her head. "I'm saying you should talk it out. If it's my fault, I'll apologize."

"Apologize? Who cares about your apology? Do you think an apology can make up for the harm you've done to me?"

She continued, "I hate you! I hate you! Why don't you just die? Aren't you Eleanor's best friend? Didn't you have a deep bond? Why didn't you die with Eleanor? You should both die!"

Laura started screaming and pounding the bed.

The commotion alarmed the doctors and nurses.

A group rushed in, and before Isabella could say a word, they injected Laura with a sedative.

"Are you a family member?" the doctor asked.

Isabella sat by the bed, wide-eyed and shocked!

"Hello, you..."

The doctor started to speak, but Isabella suddenly stood up and grabbed Laura's arm.

"Explain yourself. What do you mean by why didn't I die with Eleanor? What happened to Eleanor? Wake up! Talk to me!"
