Mother of the Moon - Chapter 109 - Proposal
Zelena.
I stabbed my fork into the piece of steak and swirled it around my plate, stirring it through the thick gravy. The dinner table was full of chatter about the upcoming celebration, excitement was buzzing through the air. This is going to be the biggest ascension ceremony that Tri-Moon has ever seen. The fact had been mentioned many times. I am excited. To officially take my place as Luna and legitimately announce my arrival, or the arrival of the Triple Goddess. But I’m terrified also. Gunner has been running things since the day we announced ourselves to the pack, his father has been helping with the transition. But come tomorrow night, we will both be formally taking our place as leaders of the pack. Though at this point, it is just a formality.
“You’re very quiet tonight” Gunner said softly leaning over his chair, closer to me.
“Got a lot on my mind” I half smiled at him.
“Like that favour I need to repay you?” he smirked. I frowned at him and quickly glanced around the table. If anyone else was listening to our conversation, they weren’t showing it.
“Stop it” I grimaced through clenched teeth. He laughed to himself and sat back up straight.
“Actually, I do need to talk with you after dinner. It’s important” I told him firmly.
“Sure, we can talk after dinner, before bed” he replied before eating another mouthful of food. He had completely missed the firm and concerned tone in my voice.
“In your office please, Tobias will be joining us”.
Gunner paused his chewing and looked at me. His brows furrowed together and his eyes held unspoken questions. He flicked his eyes to where Tobias was sitting and then back to me and answered with a curt nod.
I know that their relationship has improved tenfold, but it is plainly clear to anyone that wished to take notice, Gunner stills holds jealousy over the bond that Tobias and I share. That being said, I don’t think that he would turn Tobias away. He is too important, he was handpicked by the Goddess herself and Gunner would never throw that away. At least I don’t think he would. The anticipation of the conversation to come was messing with my nerves and scared away what remained of my appetite.
While Gunner was working with his dad in his office, I slipped away for a shower before I met with him and Tobias. A hot shower can melt away all the stress in the world, at least it can for me. The smell of my strawberry conditioner wafted around the large steamy cubicle. I tipped my head back under the water to let the conditioner wash out. With my fingers rubbing over my scalp, relaxation soon took over. My body became weightless as I felt a Drakos-Mati vision take hold. I opened my eyes and was standing in that same dark room. Why here? Why are my powers bringing me here, what is so important about this place? The smell hasn’t changed, still damp and mouldy but with hints of blood now. I stood in place and looked around the dark room, willing my eyes to adjust.
“Who’s there?” a small yet fierce female voice whispered. I turned my head in the direction that the voice came from, still not able to see anything. Who could she be talking to? No one has ever been able to see me when I’m in a vision. At least I don’t think they could.
“I know you’re there” the voice whispered again. She had a hard sharpness to her tone, it made a shiver run down my spine. I breathed deeply through my nose trying to get a sense of the girl’s scent. The smell was horrific. Something dirty and rotten dominated my nostrils but a hint of something familiar lurked in the background. What is that? I breathed in again, focussing all my energy on that peculiar scent. Where do I know that from? I strained my eyes in the darkness. A swish of something to the right caught my attention. It was like a dark shadow flew across my line of vision, bringing with it a swift breeze. The full scent of the mystery girl hit me like falling piano. I know this person. I’m sure of it.
***Zelena***
I gasped loudly, inhaling the shower water unintentionally. I spat the shower water out with a choked cough. I was back in the shower, like I’d never left. I glanced around the shower cubicle and sighed with relief. I’m alone. But what the actual fuck was that? I’ve never felt a vision so real before. Usually my visions are only visual, this time I could smell everything. Not just the overbearing foul stench but everything it that dark room. But that voice, it was like it was directed at me, like the girl could see me or sense me. This was a completely different kind of experience.
***Zelena, are you okay?***
Gunners voiced filled my head, instantly calming my erratic thoughts.
***I’m okay, just in the shower***
***I’ve been calling your name for like five minutes***
***Sorry, I was off in my own little world***
***Okay, well Tobias is here, we’re waiting for you***
***I’ll be there in five.***
Until I can figure this vision out a bit more, I’m not going to tell Gunner about it. He will not like it, I’m in no sense of denial about that. But I think it’s for the best. He is already stressing about so much, a potential traitor in our pack, the possible threat from this Italian wannabe royal pack, the party, and of course his strained relationship with Cole. I’m sure there is so much more going on, but he won’t tell me about all of it, not without my pushing him too anyway.
I threw on a pair on sweatpants, a singlet top and one of Gunners hoodies. I let my wet hair fall down my back, it’ll dry on its own eventually. I ran down the stairs and stopped in front of Gunner’s closed office door. I knocked lightly and it was immediately followed by Gunner’s voice,
“Come in”.
I pushed open the door and stepped in, closing it again behind me. Gunner was stretching back in his office chair, a big smile on his face and a glass of amber liquid in his hand. Tobias was sitting in a chair opposite the desk, also holding a glass of liquor.
“Ah, there she is” Gunner chuckled raising his glass in my direction. Wow, he seems unusually cheerful.
“Here I am” I chuckled nervously. I sat down in the chair next to Tobias and threw him a weary glance. His face was also sporting a huge smile. What is going on here?
“What have I missed?” I asked looking between the two of them.
“Nothing little one, we were just having a chat” Tobias shrugged with a smile.
“Huh, I didn’t realize that you two were so chummy” I smirked, throwing a wink to Gunner.
“There is a lot that you don’t know, my love” Gunner winked back.
“Okay… anyway, should we get on with it then?” I said slowly. The happy and cheerful energy was making me uncomfortable. It shouldn’t though, I should be happy that these two men are getting along. They are both ridiculously important to me and I love each of them in different ways, so their friendship should bring me joy. But right now, it doesn’t, it makes me nervous that I am missing something huge.
“Yes, what’s on your mind Zee?” Gunner said as he placed his glass on the desk and sat upright.
“Well uh…” I began but was cut off by Tobias.
“I’ll take this one if you don’t mind?” he said placing his hand over mine. The notion didn’t go unnoticed by Gunner, his eyes zeroed in on our connected hands.
“Alpha Gunner, I would like to join the Tri-Moon pack” Tobias blurted out. No delaying, no dancing around the subject and no easing into it. I nearly swallowed my tongue and my eyes just about burst out of my head as I whipped around to face Tobias.
“You want to join our packs?” Gunner questions leaning back in his chair, his eyes still focused on Tobias’s hand on my own. Tobias chuckled and took his hand away from mine.
“No, I have passed the Alpha title onto my Beta, my younger brother, Marius”
“Yes, I know who he is”.
Gunner paused, moving his eyes between the two of us. I could feel the confusion swirling around his thoughts.
“Why would you give up something as important and honourable as your Alpha title?”
“I am under no assumption that being an Alpha isn’t of the highest honours granted to a Were. However, I have been granted a position much more important”.
Silence enveloped the room as Tobias waited to see if Gunner was understanding him. Gunner was definitely understanding. His anger was starting to rise and his gazed narrowed at Tobias.
“Being guardian to the Triple Goddess” Tobias nodded coaxing a response from Gunner, however he didn’t bite, he just stared blankly at Tobias.
“I can’t successfully run a pack and continue my guardian duties to the best of my ability. Not with the distance between our territories”
“I am perfectly capable of protecting my Mate” Gunner growled. His dominance and power rolled off him and just about suffocated me.
“I am not questioning you, young Alpha. I know how fiercely you will fight for your Mate and it is not just my duty to protect her, but you as well. Without you she will fade”.
I had never really thought of it that way. I had always thought Tobias was to just look out for me, but to do that, he would have to look out for the ones I love as well. Including Gunner. He was right, without Gunner I would die, no question about it. With the dangers of the Origin Wolf and the mystery traitor, the more strong and capable warriors we have, the better. Especially one who’s loyalty is no question, someone who is bound to me. The realisation just made me that much more determined to convince Gunner to accept Tobias.
“Gunner, we need him. I need him” I said softly.
Gunner’s growl filled the room. Shit, I could have worded that better. His eyes moved to me and he slowly stood from his desk, glaring at me.
“Tobias, give us a moment please” he said with a growl incorporated in the last word.
***Will you be okay?***
Tobias flashed before standing up. I looked to him and gave a slow and certain nod. He stood from his chair and eyed Gunner for a moment. Gunner paid him no mind and kept his gaze firmly on myself.
***It’s okay, we’ll only be a minute***
I flashed him. Tobias slowly walked for the door and looked at us both before leaving.
