Mother of the Moon - Chapter 185 - What Happened

Lunaya.

Tobias is just a guardian, he doesn’t have power. Does he?
“Okay” he grumbled, the sound echoed around the large bathroom. I didn’t wait for him to change his mind again, I stepped forward and grabbed a loofah that was hanging from the tap. I pumped a squirt of soap onto the sponge and turned around. I ran the sponge over her arm. Her chest and stomach were covered by what I assume was once a white t-shirt, now in tatters and stained with blood. I picked at the ripped collar of the shirt and lifted it,
“May I take it off?” I asked Tobias, being careful to not anger him. He nodded his head silently. I extended one of my claws and dragged it along the length of the cloth. As it came away, I saw the extent of her wounds on her chest and stomach. A mix between a growl and a sob fell from my shocked and agape mouth. The wounds had already started to heal over. But there is no denying that she was banged up pretty bad. I ran the soapy loofah over the skin that didn’t have open wounds, which didn’t leave a lot of other areas. Slowly her soft pale skin, just like her fathers, began to shine through again. Tobias moved so that just her hair was under the water, the dried blood and dirt began to wash out. I got the shampoo and squeezed it onto my hands before lathering it into her long ebony hair. As I ran my fingers through her hair, I noticed the fresh mating mark on the top of her shoulder. Gunner wouldn’t have marked her during the fight, would he?
“This is new?” I asked Tobias as I moved the hair out of the way to show him the mark. His eyes hardened and his brows drew together. A rumbling growl rattled the glass shower screen door.
“That does not belong to her Mate” Tobias’s deep voice growled. How could that not belong to her Mate, it’s a mating mark. Outdated and considered a possessive gesture. But they are True Mates, so what the hell. But if it’s not Gunner’s then who’s is it?
“Gunner didn’t mark her?” I asked him,
“He did, but that marking is not his. The Alpha’s mark was healed. This mark is forced, aggressive and messy” he answered me,
“But then who did this?” I didn’t need to hear an answer to the question. As soon as I asked it, I knew what the answer was. That fucking Origin Alpha. He tried to force her to be his Mate. Not the first time a descendant of Gill has tried to blend the bloodlines. The fucker already had a Mate and heir, plus Zelena has a destined Mate. What idiot told him that it would work. Oh, let me guess that fool of a Prophet. Fucking bastards. Artemis thought she had to choose between two mates, and so they tried to force her hand. Those damned idiots! My anger flared and before I got the chance to compose myself, I slammed my fist into the tiled wall. The tiles cracked and shattered at the force of my punch and then clattered to the floor. Tobias looked at me with a quirked eyebrow,
“You already know?” he said.
“Yeh, I already know. The Origin Alpha, right? That fucking treacherous line of egotistical morons. Gill’s descendants have been trying to snag a daughter of Selena for generations. Came close at one point, but they never succeeded in joining the lines” I snarled.
“Come, she is clean” Tobias said firmly before marching past me and out of the bathroom. It felt like an Alpha command only stronger. I have never been affected by and Alpha’s order. But this time, I felt compelled to do as Tobias asked. I grabbed a towel for myself, wrapped it around my shoulders, and followed Tobias to a bedroom. By the strong scent of sex, and the mix of both Gunner and Zelena’s scent, I'd say this is their room. Tobias laid Zelena on the bed with a towel covering her body. I stood back and watched as he carefully dried and dressed Zelena. Not once did his gaze linger on her exposed body too long, and not once did his hands touch her inappropriately. He loves her. That’s plainly obvious for everyone to see. But he has no lust for her. And that made me feel overwhelmingly at ease with their special bond.
“What happened out there?” I asked him quietly. I don’t know why I felt the need to whisper. She is unconscious and couldn’t hear me anyway. It just felt weird to talk in a normal volume.
“It doesn’t matter now” he answered as he pulled socks onto Zelena’s feet. It's the middle of summer here, but he still put socks on her.
“I disagree, you’ve changed. And what Gunner did, to that child... Something happened” I argued. Once Tobias was done dressing her, he tucked her into the bed, pulling the covers up to her chest. He peeled his own soaking t-shirt from his massive frame and sat on the edge of the bed. He gingerly placed his hand on her stomach, then he sat silently and stared at her. I watched her as she laid completely still, with only the small movement of her chest going up and down with each breath. After a few minutes, Tobias’s deep voice whispered,
“She turned to the darkness. I could not stop her, and I could not bring her back. She was almost lost to it”. I didn’t respond, just listened as he explained.
“The black magic was consuming every part of her. Every part” Tobias whispered as his hand moved in a slow circle over her abdomen. I know of the darkness. It is a big part of the stories and training passed down from our ancestors. Throughout history, only one Triple Goddess has been completely lost to the dark side. She lost her Mate and went mad with grief. It took a lot to kill her, and along the way she wreaked unimaginable havoc. That was generations ago.
“How did you get her back? You did get her back, didn’t you?” I asked as I stood up from where I was leaning against the wall.
“We did” he said sullenly. I waited quietly for him to continue, after a few minutes of silence, he continued speaking once again,
“I had no other choice. We were losing her. There was nothing else that I could do, so I called for the Goddess, for Selene. I begged her to help me. She heard my call, and she came” Tobias paused, and I swallowed the lump in my throat. Selene came. And apparently, she didn’t just show herself to Zelena this time, but Tobias too. Maybe even Gunner. This is unheard of.
“She pulled the darkness from Zelena, that’s why she’s unconscious. Once the darkness was gone from her, she collapsed” Tobias said quietly after another moment of silence.
“And what did she do to you? This is why I can feel you have changed, isn’t it? She has blessed you somehow” I asked him, taking another step forward. I have no idea if I'm right. The only other man to be given the power of the Goddess was her lover, Endymion. Before Gunner accessed the power through Zelena, no other male has ever been given the gifts of Selene.
“She said my loyalty and courage deserved rewarding. She said I was a good guardian, and it was not my fault she stepped into the dark. She blessed me with some of her power” he continued without looking away from Zelena.
“What power?” I asked him, keeping my voice smooth and level, to gently coax more information out of him,
“Heighten speed and strength, among other things” he trailed off. I want to know more, I'm desperate to know more. But I don’t want to push him, I'm amazed he has told me this much so easily. One wrong question and this little conversation could end.
“And Gunner? He was affected by the darkness as well, did she pull it from him too?” I asked softly. Tobias stood to his full height, towering over me with and air of intimidation swirling around him.
“No” he growled then stomped out of the room. That was an abrupt exit. I guess I found my one wrong question. So, if Gunner is still under the influence of the darkness, that would explain the extreme actions taken against the Origin child. But why would the All-Mother help Zelena and not her Mate. That part doesn’t make any sense. I sat on the edge of the bed, where Tobias just vacated from. I ran my finger over Zelena’s cheek. She looks so much like Micha. I want to tell her the truth. This whole second kidnaping has really made me realise how precious the time we have is. I don’t want to spend any more of it as a stranger to her.
