Mother of the Moon - Chapter 154 - His Reasons

Lunaya.

“WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE ATTACKED HER?!” I bellowed. My furious voice echoed around the entire pack land. I’m sure every Were in the vicinity heard me. Elaine jumped forward and wrapped her massive arms around my upper body. I suppose she assumed I was going to attack. She wasn’t wrong. I wanted to kill the Were Smith, I don’t care that he is just the messenger. I really wish that I could shoot lasers from my eyes in this moment. I glared at my daughter’s Mate’s limp body. I wanted blood for what he did to her. I looked behind where Smith and Cole were holding the unconscious Gunner, waiting for Zelena to exit the car. But she wasn’t there. Roe was crying hysterically while running her hands over Gunner’s face, and Lupus was pacing back and forth, swearing to himself. Phoebe stood close to Elaine and I, ready to help Elaine restrain me. Alyse was cautiously moving closer to where the boys were holding Gunner, taking slow steps as to not make it too obvious. And Zelena was missing.
“Where is my daughter?” I hissed angrily. Lupus snapped his eyes to me and stomped a few steps in my direction,
“She isn’t just your daughter, she is ours too. She’s our Luna! We love her too!” he yelled. He held his hands in tight fists at his side and his whole body was shaking. I could see he is hurting and scared, but all I could focus on was my own anger and concern.
“Before we do anything, we need to restrain Gunner. I don’t know what he is going to be like when he comes too again” Smith groaned under the weight of the Alpha hanging from his shoulder.
“Felix is busy, and he has taken two other patrol groups with him” Cole addressed the group of us that had gathered in the driveway,
“Wait, busy with what? And why does he need that many fighters?” Smith asked, angling his neck forward to see over Gunner’s drooping head.
“I’ll explain after” Cole replied to him.
“I’ve called Mazz and Julien, they will take Gunner to the cabin and keep him there until we know what’s going on” Lupus said, his voice now sounded much calmer. All this talk and still no one has told me where the heck my daughter is. A growl slowly bubbled in my chest, growing steadily, until it came bursting out through my clenched teeth and waved over everyone. Elaine’s hold on me tightened as the growl vibrated through my body.
“Where is Zelena?” I demanded. My voice was low and threatening. Two men came around the side of the house. One short with no hair and the other tall with long grey hair. I had noticed them both around the village over the past couple of days. They nodded to Lupus and carefully pulled Gunner from Roe’s grip and took him from Smith and Cole, then they carried him away. We watched them walk away until they were out of sight, and then we all collectively turned back to Smith. Alyse made her way over to Roe’s side and took her hand, lifting it to her chest and gripping onto it with both hands. Roe smiled gratefully at Alyse and pressed herself into her side.
“What happened?” Alyse asked Smith in a cool and gentle tone,
“I don’t know exactly. Nat and I were in the water a bit further down the beach from them, we thought they were just arguing because Zelena went for a walk without telling him. The water was drowning out the sound of their conversation, we didn’t know he would actually hurt her” Smith began,
“And where is Nat now?” Roe cut in,
“She’s still at the beach. Gunner scared her pretty bad and she wouldn’t get back in the car with him. So, she stayed to look for Zelena”
“What do you mean she’s looking for Zelena? Where the fuck is my daughter?” I yelled again and struggled under Elaine’s hold.
“Fuck! Will you just let me talk, all of you, please” Smith yelled back. Alyse looked over at me and mouthed the word ‘stop’. I snarled and thrashed in Elaine’s arms but didn’t say anything more.
“Smith, where is Zelena?” Alyse asked, maintaining her smooth calm tone. Alyse, always the level-headed one. Forever dependable and willing to be the mediator.
“I... I don’t know” he mumbled,
“Excuse me?” I snapped,
“I said I don’t know. After Gunner attacked her, she suspended him in the air and cut off his oxygen. She was bleeding a lot, and using her power just seemed to make her even weaker. I was checking on Gunner when she passed out, but before she even hit the ground, some guy just appeared out of nowhere and grabbed her. I warned him to let her go, but before I could stop him, he just disappeared again” he muttered as his hands rand through his shaggy hair and pulled on the ends. With the further he got in his story, the more I wanted to kill. Her Mate attacked her so bad that she was suffering from blood loss! How could he do this to her? Why the fuck would he do this to her? If Gunner doesn’t have some kind of magically brilliant beyond all brilliant reasons behind his actions, I will end him.
“What guy?” Lupus growled,
“I had never seen him before. He just sort of appeared there, he wasn’t on the beach, and he wasn’t anywhere nearby. I don’t know how he got there, or how they vanished” he groaned. He was frustrated. I could tell, but he still let some unknown man kidnap my child. I was burning with anger, my blood boiled from it.
“You let someone take her” I growled.
“I didn’t let him take her, he just did. How the fuck am I meant to stop an enigma” Smith snarled back.
“Where is her guardian?” Phoebe spoke for the first time,
“He’s at his former pack, his younger brother just had his Alpha ascension ceremony. He is due back today though” Roe answered the question.
“Good fucking use he is then, isn’t he?” Phoebe cursed quietly.
“When are we going to stop pulling on each other's dicks, and go and actually find my fucking daughter?” I growled and struggled again to break free of Elaine. Damn this she-wolf and her unnatural strength. Elaine growled lowly and moved her mouth to my ear,
“Calm the fuck down, or I will lock you up alongside the Alpha” she warned me,
“You wouldn’t dare” I hissed back,
“Try me Lunaya”. I growled at her, and she growled back at me. We stood there, me struggling to get my arms free of her iron grip, her holding onto me in a bearhug, and the both of us growling like feral animals.
“Enough you two” Alyse shouted. I snapped my eyes to her and frowned.
“We won't get anything accomplished with you two at each other's throats. Lunaya, you need to chill the fuck out. I get it. This is your daughter and you’re scared. But we need to work together now more than ever if we are going to find her”.
This woman and her common sense. I both love it and hate it about her. I tried taking a deep breath to calm my erratic heartbeat. After a few more breaths I could feel the heat slowly leaving my body. The fear didn’t budge though. I had only just got her back, and now someone has taken her from me once again. My stomach had collapsed in on itself with fear and dread. I won’t wait another seventeen years to find her again.
“Beta Elaine, you can let me go now” I said calmly. Very slowly Elaine loosened her hold until I was able to step out of her arms.
“I’m sorry” I said to Roe and Lupus,
“No need to be, I'm worried too” Roe squeaked.
“First we need to wake up Gunner. If he is in his right mind, he may be able to tell us more about the man that took her” Cole said to the group,
“And why he attacked the Triple Goddess” Elaine inserted. No one answered her, but it was evident that we all wanted an answer to that question. Cole turned to Smith, and they began a conversation about fighters, commanders and gathering a small pack together. Lupus had pulled Roe into his arms and was trying to sooth her and calm her weeping. Elaine and Phoebe were whispering about gathering the other she-wolves and preparing them for a fight. It looks like both Luna Eclipse and Tri-Moon are expecting this to get violent. I already know it will. I will rip the arms from the Were that took her.
Finally, Elaine, Cleo, Lupus, myself and Cole, all headed for the cabin. The same little hut that they took Zelena to during her heat. We all changed into our wolves and ran through the forest at top speed. As we neared the cabin, I could hear roaring. I guess Gunner is awake.
We came up to the front door and changed back, all except Cleo who elected to wait outside. The outside of the small hut shook under the force of Gunner’s roaring and banging on the walls. Lupus led the way inside and down a narrow staircase. The two men that brought Gunner here were positioned on either side of the large steel door.
“How long has he been awake?” Lupus asked,
“He started screaming about five minutes ago” the tall one answered.
“Have you spoken with him?” Cole questioned,
“Are you fucking kidding? I'm not opening that door, not when there is an out of control Alpha on the other side” the tall one huffed and walked past us and stood at the bottom of the staircase. The short one smirked and stood beside him and motioned for us to open the door.
Lupus gripped the handle and pulled the heavy door open. We were met with a ferocious growl and a body slamming against the steel bars that separated us from him. Gunner looked crazy. Dark wild eyes bursting from their sockets and red flushed skin. His claws and canines were out and sprouts of hair were bursting through the skin on his arms and exposed chest. Gunner’s eyes found Cole first and he roared and shook the steel bars.
“You fucking traitor!” Gunner screamed at the top of his lungs while glaring at Cole. Where did that come from?
“Gunner!” Lupus bellowed. Gunner snapped his head to his father and his face fell. A look of confusion and hurt came over him and he stopped shaking the bars.
“Dad?” Gunner said softly,
“What did you do, son?” Lupus asked him firmly,
“I... I didn’t do anything. What’s happening? You're with Cole?” Gunner mumbled, moving his eyes from his father to Cole and back again.
“Gunner, what do you remember?” Cole asked stepping closer to the cell door. Gunner growled and threw his arms through the gap in the bars and tried to swipe at Cole. When he missed, he grabbed the vertical bars and shook the door with all his might.
“Don’t you fucking speak to me you filthy fucking traitor! I'll kill you for this you bastard” Gunner roared. I am completely lost now. What is it that Cole has done? Either way my patience was starting to run thin.
“Gunner! Enough!” Lupus yelled,
“How could you, my own father! How could you side with him?” he half yelled half sobbed.
“Son, I don’t know what it is you think he has done, but I'm still on your side” Lupus replied calmly.
“He locked me in this fucking cell so he could take over the pack, that’s what. You've been the traitor the whole time, haven’t you?”
