Twin Moon - Chapter 269 - Whiskey's Mark
Zelena.
I stared at Elaine’s face, trying to get my brain to digest the words. A message. What message, and from who? My eyes flicked to the Indian beauty sitting beside her, Venus, who stared back with a blank expression. I was quick to realise that I wasn’t going to get anything out of her. I moved my gaze over to my mother. She looked worried, maybe even a little shaken. There's definitely something going on here. I could just make out a red line on her forehead, just below her hairline. From a distance, it looks like a partially healed wound. I dropped Gunner’s hand and marched over to her, grabbing her face and pulling her head down so I could see it more clearly. I could still smell the blood on her, and the freshness of the mark tells me this was recent, like very recent. Lunaya carefully patted my wrist and pulled it from her cheek.
“I’m fine hon” she said earnestly,
“What happened?” I demanded. When she didn’t answer immediately, I looked over her shoulder to Alyse, who quickly dropped her head to avoid my piercing glower. I then looked over to where Lupus was sitting at the breakfast nook, he had a feral glare etched on his face. Panic was starting to rise in my stomach, making me feel uneasy. There was a thick tension suffocating the kitchen space, I could basically feel the silence crawling over my skin. They're keeping something from me, something big. Luna Eclipse would not have come all this way for nothing. Plus, my mother is hurt, Lupus is angry, and no one is speaking. My skin was getting hot and my fingers were tingling. I could feel my power simmering at the surface. They all still see me as the weak and broken girl that I was when I came here. I'm not her anymore. I haven’t been her for a while now. Why can’t they see that, why do they still not think I can handle stuff.
“What happened?” I asked again. There was much more power behind my voice that time. It almost sounded like it echoed. I could feel the words burst from my body, not just out of my mouth. I was honestly surprised with myself, I didn’t even know I could make my voice sound like that. Gunner’s arm snaked around my waist, startling me a little. He pulled me back flush against his body and buried his nose into the crook of my neck. The feel of his skin, and the dance of sparks, instantly calmed me down again.
“Shoosh” his smooth voice called as his breath fanned over my skin. I closed my eyes and laid my head back against him, revelling in the calmness he gives me. My word I have missed him. I cooled down and all the worries just slipped away, like they were never there. When I open my eyes again, they were all looking at me curiously. Roe, Lupus, Lunaya, Alyse, Elaine, Venus and even Smith, all with weird expressions on their faces.
“What?” I blurted out, suddenly feeling very self-conscious. Maybe I have something in my teeth, maybe Gunner and I still reek of sex.
“You, uh, you just went full...” Smith stumbled,
“Nothing sweet girl, come have some food” Roe called, cutting off Smith and placing a plate on the bench. I looked at Smith for an answer, but he shook his head and shrugged. So, I shrugged back and walked over to the bench. Before I sat down, I notice a new rug was placed in the centre of the kitchen.
“Nice rug” I said casually as I sat down. Roe growled lowly and shot a look to Lupus.
“Someone scratched the hardwood” she grunted. I turned to look at Lupus over my shoulder and caught him mid eyeroll. Gunner chuckled and lowered himself onto the stool next to me and took the plate his mother handed him. Like a choreographed routine, Elaine, Venus, Alyse and Lunaya all turned to look at me at the exact same time. That same feeling of self-consciousness thrummed at my insides. What the heck is going on with everyone today, they are all acting extra weird.
“Alright, what's going on?” I said putting my fork back down. I looked at each of their worried faces, waiting for them to answer, when I realised a face was missing.
“Wait, where’s uh, where’s Whiskey?” I asked. I hate calling her that, it sounds so vulgar. Granted I only just found out that she existed, and that her name is Aurora. But I also feel like I bonded with the name Aurora the moment I heard it. It's kind of like all the possible futures I imagined are connected to the girl with that name, not the girl named Whiskey.
“Well, something happened” Alyse started to say softly. I looked up again at the fading mark on my mother's forehead.
“What happened, did she do that to you?” I asked urgently as I pointed to the soft pink line on Lunaya’s caramel skin.
“Not intentionally” she fired back just as quickly and frowned at Alyse. I stood to my feet quickly, knocking over the stool with the back of my legs.
“She hurt you?” I shouted. After everything I saw from her past, all the things Selene showed me, and all the things that she didn’t show me, I wasn’t exactly surprised that she lashed out. Goddess knows I have my own issues thanks to Hank, case and point, my role in his brutal death. I closed my eyes and shivered as the picture of his mangled body appeared back in my mind. It's the one thing that I regret. Not killing him per se, just the way in which I did it. I think that was my first step into letting the darkness into my heart.
“She was just upset and frightened. Remember how the first time I touched you, you passed out and saw Selene, and you remembered everything again?” Lunaya asked me quickly,
“Yeah, of course” I muttered back, confused as to the point of this topic,
“Well, I think I did the same thing to her” she said with a confident nod.
“But I watched you touch her before, when we were in the living room. Why didn’t it work then?” I asked,
“I don’t know darling. But this time, when she woke up again... well, when she came out of it, she was a little angry”
“She was more than angry” Lupus grumbled from his seat.
“She was upset, I think it was perfectly justified” Lunaya snapped at him,
“She sent you flying across the fucking room” Lupus growled back. I was a little caught off guard by his tone. He almost sounded protective, but when did Lupus become protective over Lunaya. I honestly thought that he didn’t like her. Or maybe that was just Roe’s influence. Anyway, irrelevant, Whiskey did what?
“I’m sorry, she did what now?” I blurted surprised,
“There’s, um, sweetheart there's something we haven’t told you yet” Roe said as she pulled her apron off. She quickly came to stand in front of me and took my hands.
“This is bad, huh?” I said softly. I could tell it was. It was written on each of their faces.
“It’s not great Zee” Smith mumbled. He had moved closer to where I was standing. They all did. It was like they had encircled me, but why. Are they assuming I'm going to lash out or something. Or is this all back to the whole ‘they don’t think I can handle it’ thing.
“When Aurora got here” Lunaya started,
“Whiskey” I said, interrupting her,
“She wants to be called Whiskey” I reminded them all,
“Whiskey then” Lunaya grunted, obviously very displeased with using that name.
“Anyway, when she got here and you two collapsed”
“They did more than collapse” Smith snorted,
“Can I finish please?” Lunaya snapped. Smith held up his hands in surrender and shrugged. I couldn’t help the smirk that made its way onto my face. It's just like Smith to make a joke of a serious situation.
“Zelena honey, Whiskey has a marking” Roe blurted out quickly. Lunaya huffed at her and turned back to me. Sure, she has markings, I saw heaps of scars on her arms. So what?
“And?” I asked confused,
“She has the same mark as you” Lunaya clarified. She reached up and touched the back of my neck, right on the spot where the symbol of the Goddess sits. Wait, she couldn’t mean Whiskey has the same symbol. That's not possible, is it. They all said there can only be one Triple Goddess at a time, and the next one comes decades after the last one dies. How could there be two of us.
“That’s not possible, you said so yourself” I spat out quickly.
“There’s a lot of impossibilities happening around here lately” Venus quipped sarcastically. Smith snorted and quickly covered his mouth and whispered a ‘sorry’.
If she has a mark like me, that means she is a Triple Goddess too. Lupus said she sent Mum flying across the room. There is no way Whiskey could have done that, not without some kind of help. Like perhaps magical help.
“She has powers, doesn’t she? That's how she hurt you?” I asked, looking up at my mum. She nodded her head and cupped my cheek.
“She does” she confirmed with a nod.
“It appears to be some kind of Aerokinesis” Roe jumped in.
“That's the air one, right?” I asked, looking to her. She nodded and stepped back into Lupus’s arms.
“She may have tried to use one of her powers on me” Gunner said cautiously. I turned my gaze on him and he felt the full force of my anger. She tried to hurt him, and he didn’t tell me.
“When, how, and why are you only saying this now?” I growled lowly. I want to love my sister, but she hurt what's mine, and I can’t forgive that.
“Relax, she wasn’t able to, I used the shield” he said calmly as he stroked my cheek.
“You were able to access her power while you were away, how far did you go?” Lunaya asked quickly,
“Of course I could, she is still my Mate, no matter how far apart we may be, the bond doesn’t break because of a little distance” he scoffed back.
“How far?” Lupus repeated Lunaya’s question.
“In the mountains, near Kluane National Park, right next to the border” Gunner answered with an annoyed tone.
“Wow” Venus huffed quietly.
“Back to the part where my sister tried to hurt you” I grunted, he isn’t getting out of this that easily.
“It was when we first met, she didn’t know if I was a threat or not and attacked me on instinct” he started to explain,
“I had her pinned by the throat to stop her from spilling my guts with her fancy knives, and I'm not sure what happened next. All of a sudden, her eyes turned red, and then I couldn’t breathe. It only took a second to realise her eyes glowed because she was using a power, like how Zelena’s glow yellow”
“And yours glow silver” I interjected,
“Exactly. Well once that hit, I lifted the shield, and it blocked the power. She seemed very surprised by that, and by me using the other powers. I don’t think she knows what she is” Gunner continued as he looked down at the ground.
“Well, she sure as shit knows now” Lupus grunted.
