Mother of the Moon - Chapter 118 - My Surrogate Father
Zelena.
Okay, pampering has become my favourite thing ever. Clary did my feet and toenails, while Scott gave me a full facial and Trisha did my fingernails. Being fawned over by three people at the same time was the most awesome feeling. I felt like a princess or a queen, or even just a super-rich important person. Nat came up towards the end of my little indulgence and started setting up her makeup desk. Once the pampering was done, she started on my makeup while Scott did my hair. Turns out he is a man of many talents. By the time they were all done, and I was standing in my dress in front of the mirror gawking at myself, it had been nine hours and the party was in full swing.
“Oh my Goddess. Lena, you look so beautiful” Nat cooed as she stood behind me, looking over my shoulder at my reflection in the mirror.
“I really do” I gushed. My feet were encased in golden strappy heels, with my new red nails glimmering in the light. My new dress had been steamed and sat, wrinkle free, delicately over my body. My fingers donned the same red polish, and the bracelet that Gunner gave me dangled on my wrist. Around my neck was a dainty gold chain with a small red stoned pendant. My deep ebony hair was curled and twisted up into a loose and delicate up-do. Small tendrils of hair hung free, framing my face and caressing my shoulders. The makeup was light and natural, brightening all of my features in the most deliberate way. My eyes glittered with a gold shadow and held full and luscious lashes. A light pink blush made my pale skin glow, and a vibrant red lip completed the look in the most impeccable way.
I stared at myself for a long moment, taking in every dazzling aspect of myself. The mark on my shoulder sat openly for all to see. I turned around and the fresh mark on my back was circled by a red ring of irritated flesh, but also sat in an uninterrupted view of anyone who wanted to see it.
“Ugh, I can’t believe he bit you again. And on the day of your birthday, Luna, Goddess party, thing. What are we calling this party again?” Nat asked eyeing the new mark on my back. She was wearing a strapless royal blue high low dress that accentuated her chest and clung to her slim waist. Her hair was braided over her shoulder and her jewellery and makeup was simple and classy.
“No, I love it” I replied gazing at my myself some more.
“Really? You don’t think it’s like really possessive and demeaning?” she asked with a bit of an accusatory tone.
“Goddess no. I’m his and he’s mine. Why wouldn’t we mark each other?”
“I suppose it’s probably different cause you’re True Mates”
“Nah, we just know our love is forever. You wouldn’t let Smith mark you?”
“Heck no” she laughed bitterly,
“I love him, I really do, but I don’t think he is my forever”.
I turned to gape at her. When did this happen, I thought that they were happy. Are they not happy anymore? Have I really not noticed that they were having issues?
“Wait what? Nat, what’s going on?” I asked urgently.
“Oh babe, it’s not like that. We are very happy, and we love each other, a lot. But both of us are under no illusion that we are just comfortably settled together right now. We’re young and have plenty of time to find our end game Mates. Until then we can just be together, and what happens, happens” she said so blasély.
“That sounds so sad though. What if you change your minds?”
“It’s not sad, and if we change our minds then we stay together. You’re over thinking it”
“I think we need to unpack this”
“Nope we don’t. We need to head downstairs, the ceremony is about to start”
“Maybe tomorrow? Can we please talk about this some more?”
“Sure babe, now let’s go”.
Nat grabbed my hand and we headed down to the foyer where Roe was waiting for us. She looked up as we got to the bottom of the stairs and slapped her hands over her mouth. Tears started to pool in her eyes, and I could hear her whimpering behind her hands.
“Oh, my girls. Look how beautiful you are” she sobbed and fanned her face.
“Thanks Roe” I smiled at her,
“Thanks Ma” Nat cooed.
“Come here you two” she held her arms out for us and we stepped into them simultaneously, wrapping her up in our arms. Roe wound one of her arms around my shoulder tightly and squeezed.
“My daughters” she gushed with another sob.
“Mum, cut it out or you’ll ruin your makeup” Nat jeered as she pulled away.
I stepped back and grabbed her hands, looking over her beautiful and kind face. She may be twice my age, but you wouldn’t tell it just by looking at her. Roe is wonderfully preserved for her age and could easily pass as a young thirties. Maybe that is why I have been able to bond with her so well. I don’t see her as the scary mother in-law and instead just see a friend, a confidante.
“I love you, you know that. You’re the Mum that I always wanted” I told her. The sincerity in my voice was undeniable. Because it’s true. I adore her and couldn’t have asked for a better motherly figure.
“Oh Zelena, I love you too sweetheart” she blubbered and fanned her face again.
“Don’t cry. I didn’t mean to upset you” I chuckled awkwardly,
“I’m not upset darling, I’m just happy. Happy that you can think of me as a mother. I want to be that for you. You deserve it, and so much more”.
I wrapped my arms around her neck and pulled her into my body for a long tight hug. We stood together for a few moments, just enjoying the embrace. Beside me I could hear Nat sniffling.
“Nat are you crying?” I asked, teasing her a little.
“I’m not crying, you’re crying” she snapped back. Roe and I laughed and pulled apart to look at Nat, who was very carefully wiping a tear from her eye without smudging her makeup.
The front door opened and with it came a whirl of noise and inaudible chatter. Lupus’s head poked through and he held a wide smile over his face, the scar at his lip tilted his smile to look a little crooked, but he was still ruggedly handsome. Just like his son.
“They’re ready for” he spoke looking over each of us, then pulling his head away again.
“Let’s not keep them waiting any longer” Roe said as she smoothed down her dress and patted away the tears on her cheeks. Nat grabbed my hand and gave it a quick squeeze while smiling at me, then disappeared out the door.
“You ready love?” Roe asked looking over my face, which I’m sure held a look of mixed terror and excitement.
“I think so” I answered trying to exude confidence, but no doubt failing miserably.
“Don’t panic okay, you’re already the Luna, this is just a formality. The rest, the Goddess part of the stuff, just try and go along with it. Even I don’t know the full scope of what will happen”
“What?” I half shouted,
“Zelena, you’ll be fine. We’re all here with you”.
“O-Okay” I forced a smile and Roe softly cupped my cheek before she left through the door as well. I took a deep breath to steady my nerves and gave myself a once over in the mirror in the foyer.
“I got this” I said out loud to myself. I pulled open the front and found Lupus standing there waiting for me. Smartly dressed in a dark grey suit and his hair combed back.
“You look absolutely stunning, Zelena” he gushed, holding out his arm for me.
“Oh, stop it” I smiled and wrapped my arm through his.
“Thank you” I said with a smile, as we turned to face the stairs.
“What for?” Lupus asked in return,
“For being my surrogate father” I told him as I looked up at him with adoration. He stared back down a me for a moment, not saying anything. I could see the softness in his eyes as he looked me over. That is a description not many would use for Lupus. Soft. But right here in this moment, I could see all the mushy parts of him. He blinked a few times and cleared his throat, then turned his head straightened himself up. I leaned my head on his arm and squeezed his elbow.
“Let’s go and show you off a little” he said as he patted my hand fondly. I giggled with a little embarrassment and nodded.
