Mother of the Moon - Chapter 160 - Preperations

Lunaya.

I flew upright in the bed and looked around the room. Alyse was laying beside me, and Cleo was asleep in a chair by the window. I’m getting tired of waking up in this room after nearly dying. I really thought I was a goner this time. I was caught off guard the first time I was poisoned with aconite, and it cost me my family. I was never going to let that happen again. If I hadn’t been building up my tolerance to it over the past seventeen years, it would have killed me for sure this time around.
Alyse sat up a moment after I did, Cleo’s eyes flew open and she shifted herself to the edge of the seat, her eyes studying me like usual.
“Nae, babe, you’re okay?” Alyse asked as she ran her hand through my hair.
“I feel like I have been hit by a truck, but I’m alive, apparently” I groaned and took Alyse’s hand. I pulled it to my mouth and pressed my lips to the back of her hand.
“Did you catch him? Artemis, did you get him?” I asked looking over to Cleo. She leaned back in the chair and growled.
“The fucker got away” she said venomously,
“How?” I asked. I was angry and frustrated, but I can’t blame anyone for this. This is on me, I let him jab me with the syringe. I wasn’t ready or prepared, I wasn’t good enough. This is my own fault.
“We don’t know, I was on his trail with the Beta Cole and one of the former Alpha’s men. We had him surrounded and were closing in, but he vanished. No tracks, no scent, just gone” she snarled and curled her lips up to expose her fangs. I guess I’m not the only one with some self-deprecating thoughts and feelings.
“So what now then?” I asked her,
“Nae, let them handle it, you need to rest” Alyse urged me,
“Like hell I do. My daughter has been kidnapped, AGAIN, her Mate has gone off the deep end, and the pack healer, turned Prophet, tried to fucking kill me. I need to get the fuck out of this room and find her, maybe rip apart a few Weres along the way” I said angrily as I moved my body to the edge of the bed. Cleo growled excitedly and stood from her chair.
“I’m with you” she grunted. Alyse quickly moved to my side and placed an arm around my shoulder.
“Lunaya, you need more time to heel, there is still aconite in your system. You almost died for fucks sake. Can you just slow it down for a minute” she pleaded desperately. I shrugged off her arm and stood up. I would never admit it, but she’s right. My legs felt like jelly under my body weight and my arms hung at my side like weighted down spaghetti. My head is pounding, and I feel like I could down the entire contents of the Nile River. I am in no position to fight, but I won't give up on her again. Never again. Alyse jumped off the bed and stood in front of me, bracing me with her arms on both my shoulders.
“Nae, please” she said softly,
“I have already lost her once, I'm not going to lose her again. Get on board or get the fuck out of my way” I snapped at her. I didn’t mean for it to come out so harsh. But it did, like a kick to the guts. Her face fell and she stepped to the side.
“Okay” she whispered softly. I should have sucked it up and apologised for acting like a raging bitch. I should have held her and told her that I love her. I did none of those things. Instead, I trudged past her and back down the hallway and the stairs, with Cleo in toe. I burst through the door of the war room and glared at Beta Cole. The room was full of Weres. Beta Elaine, Lupus, the guardian Tobias and a Were that looked like a smaller version of him. The warriors Felix and Faylene, as well as Alpha Ambrose, the Howlers Alpha Lace and the Alpha from Waning Wolf, all were in the room, and all were glaring at me for interrupting. I looked around the room at each furious face, but one was missing.
“Where is the Alpha?” I snarled and flicked my eyes back to Cole.
“Until we know more about what has happened to him, and if he can be trusted to control his anger, he will remain in the cell” Cole answered without hesitation and full of authority.
“We don’t need him to control his anger, we need him to let it the fuck out. We need him to let loose and kill the fuckers that took my child” I growled back at him. Beta Elaine stepped forward and stood in all her tall and broad glory, arms crossed over her chest and a scowl on her face.
“I get that you’re angry, we all are, but either pull it together or get the fuck out and let us do this without you” she snarled down at me. I stood to my fullest height and hissed,
“Like fuck, I am not going anywhere” I snapped,
“Then shut the fuck up and take your place, quietly!” Elaine growled. I hissed again as she turned to stand back at Cole’s right. All eyes were on me as I moved to stand at the table, placing myself between Tobias and Lupus. The table was full of maps and pictures of farmhouses and large properties. I wanted to ask about them, I wanted to be caught up on what was going on, but I know better than to go against Elaine. She is not the type to not follow through on her word. One sound from me and she will toss me out on my ass.
“Scouts have searched all the larger properties around the pack land. They went as far north as Capstick and as far south as Sydney and Inverness. If it is Origin Wolf, then we can expect the pack has joined their Alpha. If it’s more hunters, then we know there will be a lot of them. These are the only possible places to maintain the large numbers and remain inconspicuous”. Cole talked and everyone listened. He commanded the room, just like an Alpha would. And they all paid attention, following his lead in every way. He wasn’t their Alpha, but they showed him the same level of respect.
