Mother of the Moon - Chapter 124 - The Cabin

Lunaya.

The woman, Romeá, led us on a wild goose chase through the thick of the forest. We walked for at least half an hour, the village and the party were long behind us. The roars of the male wolves and the constant howling rang through the trees. Whatever this girl did, it clearly has a lasting effect. I have heard of a few other daughters through our history that had similar effects on the male population, but nowhere near to this extent. This kind of reaction is off the charts. Such a large range of Weres, spread out over an expansive space, and all suffering some intense reactions. It was like she released her own chemical weapon.
Soft screams could be heard through the forest up ahead. I picked up my pace, walking a few steps in front of Romeá now. A small hut slowly appeared through the trees, the screams were coming from underneath it.
“What is this place?” I asked, turning back to glare at Romeá. The little cabin was dirty, and small and looked like it could fall down with a stiff breeze. Definitely not suitable as a safe house against horny and uncontrollable Weres.
“This wouldn’t have been my first choice either” Romeá answered, screwing up her nose.
“This is your safe house?” Elaine blanked from beside me.
“No, this is a holding cell. We use it for Ferals and prisoners” she answered, a hint of anger seeped through the word ‘prisoner’. What has happened here for her to have such an adverse reaction?
“Why here, son?” she whispered softly, probably not intending for us to hear her. I couldn’t help but wonder what has got her so worried about this cabin, something must have happened here. Another scream carried through the walls, it was filled with torment and pain. I ran for the door and pulled it open roughly.
“Stop!” Romeá called, running after me. The room was dusty and clearly unused. A small wooden table sat up against the far wall, along with two chairs. A bench top ran along the other side with a dirty sink and rusted out oven. The screaming was pouring into the small room nonstop. A bulky wooden door caught my attention, nestled away in the corner. The cries were louder coming from there. Before I got to pull open the door, Romeá jumped in front, blocking it with her body. I growled and bared my teeth.
“She is in heat, locked in a room with her Mate. What do you think you will be walking in on?” she growled back. I paused and straitened my back. Shit. She’s right, I’m not thinking clearly. I stepped back from the door, putting some space between us. Elaine stood in the main doorway, her hard eyes watching me carefully.
“You are here to guard the building, nothing more. This child is my responsibility, and I won’t have you putting her in any kind of uncomfortable or compromising positions. Are you understanding me?” she asked firmly. I felt both hatred and admiration for the small she-wolf. She is clearly very fiercely protective and has taken to the role of mother effortlessly. My role. It should have been me protecting her, watching over her, making sure no one else caused her harm or shame. It should have been me.
“I will watch over the Goddess and her Mate, Phoebe can stay with me. You need to go back and collect your Mate and our other companions. Take a minute to calm yourself” Elaine spoke as she took a few steps into the small room.
“No, I will stay, she needs me here” I refuted.
“No, you will go. Don’t forget your place Lunaya” Elaine spoke with authority and a heavy firmness. Romeá watched our interaction closely. Her curiosity towards me hadn’t escaped my notice. I could see the gears of her mind working, trying desperately to figure out my secret. A secret I wasn’t yet ready to tell.
“Very well” I conceded. Not because I agreed with Elaine, but because I need to separate myself from the situation. I need to put some space between Romeá’s curiosity and my all too revealing emotions.
“I will come back in two hours” I said with conviction.
“Three” Elaine rebutted,
“Two” I repeated, crossing my arms and squaring off against Elaine.
“You will come back in three hours with either Venus or Alyse, two of us will remain on guard at all times. If Tri-Moon wish to send some of their own guards, you will accept them and work together”.
“No…” I began to argue but Elaine growled, a large rumbling growl that shook the creaky old floorboards.
“Enough, Lunaya!” she bellowed, leaning her massive frame towards me. I stood straight and glared at the Beta. Her stubbornness was definitely one of legend. We could fight it out, but I will still not win this one. I yielded and let my surrender flow from me.
“Well then, sounds like we have come to an agreement” Romeá spoke, breaking the rising tension. The wooden door behind Romeá swung open, a tall and muscular Were stood in the open doorway. His eyebrows were pulled together in a frown and his lips were pressed into a tight line, revealing his frustration. The screams of pain rolled through the room from the open door. He stepped through the doorframe, glaring at myself and Elaine. His blue eyes were hard and red rimmed, a hint of wildness flashed deep in the back of his burning gaze.
“Who the fuck are you?” he growled stepping closer. Elaine came to my side and hissed at the man's threatening stance. Romeá jumped forward, placing herself between us. She placed her small hand on the Weres large chest and held him still.
“Gunner, this is Elaine and Lunaya, they have come to offer their protection to the Triple Goddess” Romeá spoke looking up to the face of the Were.
“Ladies, this is the Alpha of Tri-Moon and my son, Gunner”.
The Alpha. She is Mated to the Alpha. That means this is her Mate. He stood tall and strong. His white button-down shirt sat untucked and crumpled over his large muscular chest. His dark blonde hair was scruffy and a little long, coming down close to his shoulders. As I gazed over his handsome young face, I saw the remnants of a scar leading towards his ear. The skin was healed but had left behind what looks like a burn mark. His ear itself was missing the top section. A dark pink and jagged semi circle remained where the piece of flesh has been ripped from. A battle wound perhaps.
“Where have you come from? I don’t recall seeing you at the ceremony” his hard voice trailed across the space between us. His fists were clenched tightly at his sides and his body trembled all over. His nose and the corner of his mouth twitched incessantly. The heat was affecting him, more than he cared to show. The cries of pain from my child had not stopped. Burying their way into the depths of my soul.
“Why are you not with your Mate?” I snapped.
“I asked you a question” he growled, pushing against the hold of his mother.
“She is screaming, in pain. Why are you not comforting her?” I demanded, my own growl filtering through. Gunner gripped his mother’s hand and forcefully removed it from his chest. In two large steps he came to stand in front of me. His chest was pushed out and only millimeters from pressing against me. I stood tall but he was a few inches taller. He tried to assert his Alpha dominance, I could feel it bouncing off my immune skin. Elaine flinched from beside me, her head lowering ever so slightly. Romeá whimpered from behind her son, feeling the full effect of her Alpha’s dominance.
“Who are you?” he demanded, a wary and somewhat confused looked flashed across his face. He has clearly not met someone who could resist the command of an Alpha.
“I am Lunaya, I have come to protect the Goddess. Now, why are you not taking care of her in her most desperate hour?”
Gunner released his threatening stance and pulled back his Alpha control. His stepped back slightly and his stiff shoulders slumped forward. Defeat. He was completely lost and overcome with defeat.
“She isn’t conscious, and I can’t get her to stop screaming” he said dejectedly. His mother came to his side and wrapped her small arm around his waist.
“You haven’t laid with her?” I asked, my voice coming out a little too hard.
“She isn’t conscious. I’m not going to rape my Mate!” he yelled. His feral eyes opened wide, and his cheeks turned a shade of red. Anger, frustration, anxiety and a huge amount of something sexual flowed from him. I stared at him, shocked. Dumbfounded. With all these other random Weres damn near losing their minds over this girl’s scent, and yet here, her own Mate, has been able to sit at her side and not lose control. My respect for the boy, no, the man, it skyrocketed. I knew in that moment he too would have my loyalty and respect, not just my blessing.
“I apologize” I said placing my hand over my heart and bowing my head. As I stood back up, a baffled looked sat on both Gunner’s and Romeá’s faces. I looked to Elaine and she had her brow raise, scrutinizing my action.
“Thank you for coming, where did you say you are visiting from?” he said a little softer, still looking at me with bewilderment.
“We have come from Luna Eclipse” I told him. He snapped his head to his mother and she nodded enthusiastically with a broad smile. I heard him whisper to her ‘really?’ and she continued to nod, placing her hand on his forearm.
“Well, okay then. Please let us arrange a meeting once my Mate is feeling better” Gunner said quietly.
“Of course, Alpha Gunner” Elaine finally spoke. He eyed her up and down as if just noticing her for the first time. His eyes widened slightly before a calm composure covered his face.
“If you’d excuse me” he said as he turned away, he brushed his mothers’ shoulder then went back through the large wooden door, closing it behind him. He seems like a good man, a good Were. I have a feeling my daughter is in good hands.
“I will go find the others then” I said as I looked to Elaine. She nodded her head and backed out the door. Cleo was laying on the ground, still in her burgundy and grey wolf form, while Phoebe leaned up against a tree.
“Phoebe, you will stay with me and we will take first watch over the Goddess. Cleo, you will accompany Lunaya back to the village to find the others. We will be refreshing guards every three hours” Elaine directed. Cleo stood and took a few steps closer as Elaine spoke. Phoebe nodded and walked around the other side of the cabin, scouting the perimeter, I assume.
“I will send more she-wolves out shortly. Thank you, Beta Elaine” Romeá spoke kindly. Her soft and genuine words were a stark contrast to the constant firmness that I have grown use to from the Luna Eclipse she-wolves.
Elaine moved to stand in front of the cabin door and crossed her arms over her wide set chest. Romeá walked past Cleo and I, and started back towards the way we came. Cleo nodded to Elaine and turned to follow behind her. I hesitated for a moment, eyeing the cabin.
“Go, Lunaya” Elaine rumbled. I turned and jogged after the others without saying anything further to Elaine.
