Twin Moon - Chapter 215 - Checking In

Zelena.

Smith and I headed back to the main house, with Tobias close behind. We sat down on the porch swing as Tobias perched himself on the railing opposite us. We sat quietly for a minute or two, with Smith rocking us gently. I studied the side of his face as he looked out over the village. His dark red hair sat in a mess of shaggy curls on top of his head. Some tendrils were long enough to reach his eyes, while others hung down past his neck. Smith’s chin was hard and straight, chiselled and defined. His nose was straight and turned up at little at the end. But it only added to his rugged good looks. When Smith smiles, with his broad mouth and perfectly white teeth, it’s hard not to smile along with him. He has always had this happy-go-lucky way about him. I kind of envy that part of him.
“Tobias, can we have a few minutes alone please?” I asked and looked up at him,
“No” he grunted back.
“What do you mean no?” I challenged annoyed,
“I mean I don’t trust him” he said firmly.
“What the fuck is that supposed to mean?” Smith growled and shot to his feet. The swing swung back with the force of his movement. I grabbed my belly with one hand and the chain with the other. Tobias stepped forward and looked at me over Smith’s shoulder. I put my feet down to stop the swing and carefully stood up. Tobias inched closer to Smith and bared his teeth.
“You’re careless” Tobias growled. I stood next to Smith and placed a hand on his shoulder, pulling him back a little.
“Tobias, you’re being unreasonable. You know that Smith would never hurt me” I snapped at him,
“Not on purpose. But he is childish and hasty, he doesn’t think. That makes him reckless and dangerous” Tobias stated firmly.
“I would die before I let anything hurt her” Smith growled angrily at Tobias. He stepped forward, puffing out his chest and trying to make himself look taller. It was pointless though, Smith is almost half the size of Tobias. I jumped between them and pushed them apart as much as I could. Tobias was growling, Smith was growling back, and I was smack bang in the middle of their display of masculine dominance. Enough of this. Summoning my power, I let it flow through to my hands. With a firm blast, I sent them both sliding backwards.
“Enough!” I yelled.
“Smith, sit down. Tobias, go and cool off” I demanded. Smith growled lowly but complied and sat back down on the swing with a grunt.
“No” Tobias rounded out,
“Smith maybe free spirited and a little hasty, but when it counts, he comes through. Every time”
“I don’t trust him”
“I don’t care. Not that I need to, but I can take care of myself. Now go!”. I was pissed. More than pissed, I was infuriated. I get it, he’s my guardian, but he also knows that Smith is no threat. I don’t understand what he is thinking. Tobias glared at Smith once more before looking down at me. His face was still hard, but he nodded stiffly and walked off towards the fire pit.
“What the fuck is his problem?” Smith grumbled as I sat back down beside him.
“I have no idea, that is so unlike him” I replied. I’ll have to talk with him about boundaries. Maybe try and suss out what is really going on. I know he and Smith like to give each other shit, well more that Smith likes to give him shit. But Tobias never really seemed to mind before. He sure as shit didn’t get aggressive over it.
“Whatever. What did you need me for anyways?” Smith asked. He leaned back on the swing and crossed his arms.
“I just wanted to make sure that you were okay, after Nat, you know”
“Aww. Were you worried about me?” he teased and nudged my shoulder,
“Yes” I answered back with a serious tone. Smith dropped his smile and uncrossed his arms. He was quiet for a minute, so I sat and waited for him to speak.
“It fucking hurt you know. I really do love her. But it wasn’t a surprise” he said sullenly,
“What do you mean?”
“Nat had been pulling away for a while. When I think back on it, it started when the fucker first got here. They had a bond from the very beginning, she was just too damn stubborn to let herself feel it”. He spoke so even and calm, like he had full control over his emotions. It was surprising, if I was in his place, I would be a wreck.
“You knew she had feelings for him?” I asked him softly,
“I did. I didn’t like it, of course. But I have known for a while that it was only a matter of time until she accepted them. I have just been waiting for it” Smith said with a sense of calm finality.
“If you knew all along, why didn’t you just end it with her?”
“I didn’t want to force her hand. Plus, I still had a little bit of hope”
“Hope?”
“Yeah, that I was wrong”.
“Oh, Smith” I said sadly and shifted across the bench until my body was next to his. He lifted his arm and shifted it over my shoulders, so I could let my head rest on his chest.
“Don’t worry about me, alright. I’m fine” he said encouragingly.
“I was meant to be the one making you feel better” I said with a chuckle,
“Well mission accomplished, bestie” he chuckled and squeezed my shoulder.
“I’m sorry about Tobias, he was out of order”
“Nah, don’t be, he’s just doing his duty. Don’t fret on it”
“Well for the record, you’re not reckless or dangerous”
“Thanks Princess” he said gratefully and pressed his lips to the top of my head.
“You know that I love you, right? You were my first friend. You’re my best friend” I told him as I peered up at him. He smiled and shifted his eyes back out to the village.
“I know, I love you too” he smiled and rested his cheek on the top of my head. We sat that way for a while, just listening to the sky rumble. The rain came in fast and hard, quickly soaking the ground. The sky got dark and dances with flashed of lightning. This is going to be one hell of a storm.
“So what are you going to do now? There aren’t that many she-wolves our age around here” I asked as I sat up right and held my belly.
“I’ll figure it out, I never had trouble with girls before, so I’m not worried”
“Yes, I heard all about your scandalous ways” I giggled.
“But on a serious note” he said with a deep breath,
“Did you get a load of that Hindi hottie that came with the Luna Eclipse she-wolves?” he crooned. He kicked a leg out, snapped his fingers, whistled. I huffed and laughed. Of course he wasn’t being serious.
“Venus” I said with a nod of my head. He was right, she was gorgeous.
“Yeah, Venus. Good Goddess she was something else, wasn’t she?” he said with a faraway tone.
