Twin Moon - Chapter 242 - Surrender
Aurora.
This could all be a trap. The passenger door swung open and Gunner sat back upright in the driver's seat,
“You coming, or what?” he asked with a smile. I carefully climbed into the seat and shut the door. I looked at Gunner as he started up the engine and backed out of the shrub and trees that the car had been half hidden amongst.
“Where exactly are we going?” I asked him. He turned to look at me quickly before looking back at the darkening road.
“My pack” he answered like it was obvious,
“I’m aware of that, but where is your pack?” I asked with a little more hardness to my voice. Gunner paused before answering. He looked at me a couple of times out of the corner of his eye as he drove, while I sat quietly watching him, waiting for his answer.
“Are you having second thoughts?” he asked cautiously,
“Not exactly. But driving in a car, with a man I’ve just met, in the middle of the night, to a destination that I don’t know, you can see why that is a little concerning” I told him.
“It’s not the middle of the night, it’s just off eight o’clock” he said back. He was trying to avoid telling me, why? What is he hiding.
“Where are we going?” I asked again,
“Why does the destination matter? You said you wanted to come with me” he quipped back,
“Why is it such a big secret? If you’re trying to earn my trust, this isn’t the way to do” I snapped angrily. This doesn’t feel right. Why is he trying to hide their location? I have a bad feeling about this.
“With all due respect, it was you that tried to kill me at first sight, not the other way around. If anyone should have trust issues here, it’s me” he snorted. He's avoiding the question. I'm not stupid, I know how manipulation works, and he is trying pretty damn hard to steer this conversation somewhere else. This must be a trap. What other explanation is there? I was right all along, he is a creation of the hunters and he’s been sent out to find me and bring me back. That's what he’s doing, he is taking me back to the hunters. Well fuck that, I'm not going back.
“Fuck this” I spat and pulled my door handle. The door swung open and I reefed my seatbelt off.
“Stop!” Gunner shouted. He leaned over my lap, grabbing my legs to stop me from jumping out of the moving car. With one hand still on the wheel, and a lot of his upper body on my legs, he pulled the door closed again with a hard thud. Gunner sat up a little more, then he gently took the seatbelt from my hand and buckled it back into place.
“Please don’t do that” he said pleadingly, while keeping his hand on the buckle.
“Tell me where you’re taking me” I shouted. I had one hand on the doorhandle ready to swing it open, and the other hovering over his hand on my seatbelt.
“To my pack” he said gently. All this time he was still driving, a fact that concerned me. Even if we did crash, I probably wouldn’t die, and I would heal quickly. But when there’s a scuffle in a car, don’t people usually pull over, why wouldn’t he want to stop?
“Where is your pack?” I demanded and tried to pull his hand away from the buckle. He refused to let me get to the belt, and instead grabbed my hand and held it tightly on my lap.
“I can’t tell you that” he said softly,
“Then I'm not going!” I screamed and tried to pull my hand free. The car screeched to a halt, sending my body jolting forward hard and my head whipping back. Before I had a chance to stop my head from spinning, the seats back rest dropped down flat, and Gunner’s body was hovering over the top of me. His hands were pinning me down on either side of my head, and one of his knees sat between my legs. The position felt very close, intimate even. Once again, my body betrayed me and my heart began to flutter. My breathing increased and my skin ran hot. I arched my back, trying to press myself against him, but he was too high above me.
“Calm down, I’m not going to hurt you” he said gently. I took a long deep breath, trying to rid myself of the pulsating desire in my stomach.
“There you go” Gunner cooed. The big idiot mistook my excitement for fear.
“Get off me” I growled lowly,
“In a minute” he said back softly,
“No, now!” I screamed and thrashed my arms and legs. One of my knees hit Gunner between his legs. He grunted and buckled over, leaning his head on my shoulder. He groaned in pain and moved one of his hands from beside my head, leaving the space open. I took the opportunity and opened the car door, I shoved Gunner off me, sending him toppling onto the ground. I jumped from the car and started to run back the way we came. I won’t go back to them. I can’t go back there. I ran down the road for a bit, then dodged off into the trees. I was moving fast, constantly changing my direction and backtracking, making it harder for him to follow me. If those bastards want me back, they’ll have to kill me first.
I stopped running and pressed my back against a tree trunk. I held my breath and listened to the sounds through the forest. The thumping of my heart was the only thing I could hear. Not even the forest animals were risking being caught tonight. I pushed off the tree and started to run again, only to be hit in the back and pushed to the ground. I rolled over and came face to face with a large set of razor sharp teeth. I pulled my knees up to my chest and planted my feet on its stomach. I pushed hard with my legs, sending the beast flying through the air and slamming into a tree. As I jumped to my feet and glared at the large wolf, I had to pause. This one was smaller, and a darker shade of grey. It's not Gunner. Gunner’s beast is huge, and his fur is a silky silver. Who the fuck is this? The wolf charged at me, I lifted my hand for my blade and hissed with anger. My bag is still in the car, the blade that Gunner didn’t destroy is in the bag. Fuck. The grey wolf jumped, launching itself through the air, headed right for me. Just at the last second, it was struck in the side and sent rolling through the trees away from me. A whirlwind of growls, grunts and yelps sounded through the forest as the animals fought.
I should have run, I shouldn’t have hesitated. But stupid me, I waited, I watched. Gunner’s wolf was clearly the dominant creature and could have killed the other wolf ten times over by now. But he didn’t lay any lethal blows. He was simply trying to subdue the other beast. Gunner had the other wolf pinned with his large paw on his throat. The smaller wolf was huffing and whining, it had smears of blood seeping through its fur.
“Kill it!” I shouted. Gunner whipped his head to me and flashed his teeth. The wolf struggled and yelped under Gunner’s hold.
“Gunner, kill it!” I screamed. But no, the big dumb lump didn’t kill it. Instead, Gunner took his paw off the wolf and took a few steps back. His silver fur slowly receded back into his skin, and he stood on two human feet with his hands out in front of him in surrender.
“What are you doing?” I yelled angrily. He was surrendering. What the fuck, he had it, he won, why would he let it go?
