Mother of the Moon - Chapter 186 - The Aftermath

Lunaya.

I left Zelena to rest and went in search of Alyse. No doubt she is tending to the injured Weres. As I made my way outside, I found the clearing filled with bandaged and bloodied Weres. Most of them were up and about, walking around or sitting and talking. Some, however, were laid out on stretcher beds, in far worse shape. A few tables had been set up with some she-wolves serving food to the warriors. I spotted Alyse flittering between two stretcher beds and made my way to her.
“Can I help?” I asked. I stepped up behind her as she was wiping the blood from a she-wolfs face. Alyse jumped with a squeak and turned around, I’d startled her. I smiled and she sighed.
“No love, you need to rest as well. Go get yourself something to eat, I will join you shortly” she squeezed my forearm with a soft smile on her beautiful face, before turning back to the she-wolf. I looked around and spotted Ares sitting with his sister on some large logs around an empty firepit. I headed over to them and sat down across from him. Analah nodded and offered a crooked smile. She had fought well. I saw her blonde wolf take down a much larger grey wolf during the fight near the farmhouse. She had a bandage around her upper right arm, and another holding a piece of gauze to her neck. All in all, she still looks perfectly fine. She will fit in well with Luna Eclipse, if she ends up deciding to stay there. I nodded my head to Ares, who smiled and nodded back. He stood up and held out a large bowl with a spoon in it for me. I took the bowl and held it to my nose. Beef stew.
“Thank you” I said as I sniffed in the hot beefy scent.
“You’re welcome. I'm glad to see you unscathed. You’re a great fighter. Lua Chei would be lucky to have a Were like yourself” he said confidently with a wide smile taking up most of his face. He wasn’t trying at all to be subtle about his offer to join his pack.
“Thank you. You as well, both of you. You can really hold your own” I said as I raised my bowl in a cheers motion.
“Is that something you would consider?” Ares asked,
“What’s that?” I replied, playing dumb,
“Joining us at Lua Chei. You and your Mate of course” he smiled. The offer was very kind, and if I'm honest, a little sudden. As flattered as I am, and as lovely as the Lua Chei pack land was, it would never happen.
“I appreciate your offer, I really do. But I think we both know why I can’t do that” I said kindly.
“Ahh, of course, the big secret” Ares chuckled,
“Are you ever going to tell her the truth?” he asked, turning his body to face me, giving me his full attention. I’m not at all surprised that he knows. He is a smart man. Plus, after the battle, I think a lot more people know about my terribly kept secret.
“I am, as soon as she is on her feet again” I said with conviction. And I was. I'm not going to live at her side as a stranger any longer.
“Good. That's good” Ares smiled.
“And you? Are you going to take your rightful place and let your father retire?” it wasn’t my place to ask, but we were getting personal so why not. Ares huffed and slapped his thigh. A laugh burst through his plump pink lips, and he threw me a ‘you’re bold’ kind of look. I lifted a shoulder and smirked.
“I am. The old geezer needs a break I reckon” Ares chuckled. This elicited a giggle from Analah also.
“What will he do with all that spare time?” Analah snickered.
“Thankfully him and Mum are too old to keep reproducing. But I reckon they will keep up the vigorous practicing” Ares boomed and slapped his thigh again. I was glad to see they weren’t as shy about their parents very active sex life like their younger brother was.
As we sat and ate our food, the conversation flowed easily. More Weres joined us and also partook in the discussion. As the sun set, a fire was lit, and the warriors soon congregated around the heated flames. The sullen feeling of the battle and the heavy losses we all bared, was soon forgotten. Laughter, songs and avid conversations filled the air. It was almost easy to forget about the dead in that moment. However, the good feeling didn’t last for too long. The songs turned to dreary medleys and the conversation quietened to whispers. Tears fell and sadness took over those gathered. The warriors slowly broke off to go to their homes and loved ones, while the visiting Weres left for their temporary accommodations. I was left sitting alone on the log, staring at what remained of the fire. A soft hand snaked around my neck from behind, and I looked over my shoulder to see Alyse smiling down at me.
“Come on, time for bed” she said softly and pressed her lips to my temple. Her stomach growled loudly, and she giggled.
“Did you get to eat at all?” I asked her as I stood from the log and grabbed her hands. She smiled at me and shook her head.
“Nah, there was too much to do. The poor human couldn’t keep up with it all” she chuckled,
“Human? What human?” I rushed out,
“The doctor. Apparently, he has a special deal in place with Gunner and Lupus. He keeps his mouth shut, and they fill his pockets” she said with a shrug of her shoulder.
“That doesn’t sound exactly safe” I grumbled. I imagine if he is greedy enough to be taking money on the side for working with Weres, it probably wouldn’t be too hard to turn him. I would hope that hunters didn’t find out about this arrangement. They wouldn’t be too forgiving with his healing of werewolves.
“Meh, not our concern. He agreed to it willingly” Alyse huffed and pulled me forward. We were heading for our tent when her stomach rumbled again.
“No. You need something to eat before bed. We’ll go snoop through their kitchen” I mused as I pulled her towards the packhouse.
