Twin Moon - Chapter 257 - The Witch

Aurora.

The beast was in the clear, running full pelt through the trees and away from the gunfire, the baby still calm and happy in his jaws. Now what, I wonder, am I meant to just keep following him? I was about to stop running alongside the wolf, when a shot rang out. The man’s beast whimpered and stumbled as it ran, forcing it to fall and roll through the snow. The bag that the baby was in, flew from his mouth and slid along the ground, making the child scream. Another shot sounded and the animal whined and tried to stumble forward, towards the baby. He managed to get to his feet and began running towards where the bag had landed, when another shot sounded. It grunted and fell to the side, but dragged itself forward, until it had placed its body completely over the baby, like he was shielding it. I walked over next to the panting wolf and roamed my eyes over its body. A patch of purple liquid was oozing out of a wound on its ribs, and another wound closer to its hip. There were three shots, but I could only see two visible wounds. Aconite. The poison is deadly to werewolves. And one of the favourite tools to use by hunters. With a highly concentrated dose, it can cause death within an hour. With these few wounds, the beast will just be in excruciating pain for the next few hours. If he had been shot a few more times though, death would be coming for him. Such a shame, he was so close to escaping too.
The sound of crunching snow under heavy boots echoed through the trees, and hunters slowly began to emerge from the trees. They encircled the beast, trapping it in. Two figures stepped forward and I recognised the both of them immediately. One was an officer, I don’t know his name, but I heard them call him the General. He was a regular at my lessons. He never participated, but he came to watch all the time. The General would stand there and shout orders and yell at the men, he was one of the higher ups in the organisation. The other man was a younger and stronger looking Hank, Zee’s father from the basement. What would he be doing out here with hunters. As the two men stood side by side, it became abundantly clear. They were brothers, maybe twins. They looked just like one another, the General was maybe a little shorter than Hank, but their faces were the same. Hank laughed wickedly and kicked the dog in the stomach. He grunted and whimpered, but remained where he was, on top of the child.
“Where’s the baby?” the General asked firmly, but the wolf didn’t answer. He probably couldn’t even see straight. With three rounds of aconite coursing through his blood, I imagine reality is feeling a lot like hell right now. Hank stepped forward and went to kick the beast again, but the animal was too fast and clamped his jaws around Hank’s ankle. Hank screamed and fell back, all while his ankle remained locked between the wolf’s sharp teeth. The General stepped forward and pulled his gun from his hip. He aimed it at the leg of the beast and fired. The wolf let go of Hank’s foot and howled in pain. The other hunters quickly dragged Hank away. The wolf was panting hard and whining in pain. I watched as its fur receded back into his skin and his body reshaped into the man he was before. He kept his body curled around the bundled bag that was holding the baby, but it was now clearly visible, without all the added fur shielding it.
“There it is” the General smiled,
“Take it” he commanded, and all of the hunters converged on the mans naked form. I didn’t expect any kind of resistance from him, especially after being shot with the aconite, but I was wrong. The man growled and clawed, and fought fiercer than I thought possible. He sent a few of the hunters flying into trees, and even landed a few good punches. But after a minute, they had him on his knees with his hands in handcuffs behind his back. One of the hunters picked up the bag and handed it to the General. He grabbed the baby and laughed.
“You thought you could hide from us. You thought we didn’t know where you were. Silly dog. We know everything” the General chortled and handed the baby off to another hunter.
“Let me kill it, Trevor! I want that mutt dead” Hank screamed from behind the General.
“Quiet!” he demanded, and Hank’s screams quickly died down. The general bent down in front of the man and grabbed him by the hair, lifting his head so that he would see him.
“No” he said to himself,
“I think this mutt could be useful”.
The General stood up and waved his arms about, giving his men silent orders. They must have understood his hand movements, because they pulled the naked man to his feet and began dragging him away. He fought and screamed for the baby, but it was pointless. The hunters marched off with the baby, in the opposite direction.
“You’re letting it live?” Hank screamed as he came back to his brother's side.
“For now” the General answered,
“It mutilated me, I want it dead” Hank demanded.
“Come now brother, we have what we came for, now the real fun can begin” the General smiled and tapped his brother on the shoulder.
“Why do we need to keep them alive? If we just kill them now, the whole line will be gone”
“I’ve told you why, and I won't have this conversation again. Do your duty little brother” the General hissed angrily. Hank groaned but nodded his head reluctantly.
“Good, now that is settled, I have a special mission for you” the General smirked at his brother,
“What mission, this is the first I've heard of it” Hank snapped.
“We still don’t know how to trigger the magic” he told him,
“And, what does that have to do with me?” Hank quipped,
“We are going to try two different tactics”
“Trevor” Hank ground out,
“I will take this one back to the main facility”
“Don’t say it” Hank warned, but his brother ignored his plea.
“You will take the other one, Zelena its name was”
“No”
“You’ll raise it like a normal child”
“Not a fucking chance!”
“You’ll live in a normal town, with regular civilians and report back any changes with the child”
“No! Not going to happen. You can’t do this to me” Hank argued.
“This is an honour. You will have the chance to turn the tides on this war. For too long have those beasts been able to roam free throughout this world, killing humans at will. They have held the power long enough. If one of these kids is the answer, then it’s our duty to do all that we can, to use them to the full extent of their abilities” the General scolded,
“And if you’re wrong? If neither one of them have the magic?” Hank screamed his question,
“Then you can kill it. But only once we know for sure that it’s useless” the General confirmed with a smirk.
“And what will you do with this one?” Hank asked with a general toss of his head.
“This one will have a slightly different upbringing. If the normal childhood doesn’t work on yours, then maybe the brainwashing will work on mine”.
Both the General and Hank chuckled sinisterly as they walked off after the other hunters. From what I understood, each brother took a baby to raise them separately. One like normal and the other with brainwashing, whatever the fuck that is supposed to mean. But what magic are they talking about. The only magic that the hunters ever mentioned to me, was the dark witch magic that the Moon Goddess used. She has some kind of black magic that she used to create the werewolves, so that they could kill off the humans. At least that’s the legend. Why would they think these babies could have magic. Wait, if they do, maybe that’s where they got my power from. Maybe they used the babies to help create me. What am I thinking, this is a dream. It’s not real. I looked after the brothers, but my head spun and the dizziness took over. I was falling backwards before it all went black again. I kept falling, unable to move or stand or do anything. It was just black nothingness.
Flashes of cloudy pictures started to flood my vision, followed by echoing voices and laughter and cries. The sounds all melded together, I could barely make them out. And the pictures moved so fast, I couldn’t see them properly. I spotted Gunner in one of the pictures, with his arms around his Mate.
“I love you, Zelena” he called to her. His voice, and the name he called her echoed all through my ears. Zelena, I thought her name was Zee. Zelena was the name of one of the babies. The pictures shifted, and now the man from my dreams was there. He kissed me on the head and smiled,
“Stay strong, my beautiful Aurora” he whispered sweetly. Why would he call me Aurora, the other baby’s name. That’s not my name, my name is Whiskey. It doesn’t make sense. The pictures faded out, and another took its place. It was Zee and I, standing in front of each other. She grabbed me and pulled me into her body for a hug. A gentle glowing light shined all around us. She looked happy and excited. I was smiling, and I don’t smile. This is some kind of black magic, just like the hunters were talking about. That's what’s going on here, Zee is a witch, just like the Moon Goddess. That's why we look alike, she’s using magic on me. Well, that will have to stop.
The pictures faded away, the voices fading with them, leaving me in the darkness with the never ending feeling of falling. I landed on something soft and flew upright. I gasped as I sat up and looked around the room. Most of the people that were on the driveway, were now crowded in the room here with me. I searched out Gunner first, he was looking back at me with gentle eyes. Next to him was her, Zee, or Zelena, whatever her name is. The witch.
