The Moon's Descendant - Chapter 77 - Epilogue
Gunner.
It’s been three months now since the battle. Three months of helplessness and pain. Everyone is telling me to keep pushing on and to throw my all into leading the pack. But it’s hard, and it’s getting harder each day. Cole has been great with the pack, helping where he can. I appreciate everything he is doing but it’s just not right. I thought that I would have Zee beside me, helping me. I thought we were going to do this together.
We lost thirty-six wolves in total. Two from Blue Moon and one from Crescent Wolf. A group service was arranged to bury our dead and a huge black marble boulder was brought in to hold a memorial placard. Mum and some other she-wolves arrange a garden area and small benches to surround the boulder, making a nice area to sit and mourn. I haven’t had the strength to go there yet, but I can see it through the trees from my office window. I find myself often staring at it mindlessly.
Alpha Titus of Crescent Wolf was killed in the attack on their pack village, along with the Beta and two thirds of their pack. Their Alpha-Son is only six years old and not ready to lead. So, after they buried their dead the remaining pack members came to live with us at Tri-Moon. It was the least that I could do to help them, after all the hunters weren’t even after them. The Luna Lucile made sure that I understood their stay would only be temporary. She wants to rebuild their village and start fresh. I admire her strength and resilience, even though anyone can see that she is deeply hurting. I will help them, in every way I can. I have started to take the Alpha-Son Frendrick under my wing and continue his teachings on the ways of an Alpha.
Tobias has been hard to get rid of. He basically lives here now, even though he has a pack of his own to run. Much to my dismay, Mum set him up with his own room in the pack house. His brother and Beta, Marius, has been running things for him back at Blue Moon. Turns out that Marius was the dark grey wolf that I fought beside in the battle. He's a great guy, a little full of himself, but really loyal and kind. We've actually become good friends since the battle.
Unfortunately, this battle was no small event. The news of the hunter's attack on our pack, the Crescent Wolf pack and three more packs in the Eastern Canadian regions during their search for Zelena, has begun to travel far and wide. With the news of the hunters, goes the story of the Triple Goddess and her Ture Mate. Although most packs hear the story and think of it as nothing more than a made up or over-exaggerated tail, other packs know differently. The true believers among the were-kind are taking notice, and it can only lead to more dangers.
Sitting at my desk I realised that I could smell myself, it’s been a few days since I last showered. I must do something about that before I head to the hospital. I packed up some paperwork and left my office to head up stairs. Zelena’s scent still clung to the air in the bedroom, the bed and her pillow hold it the strongest. I haven’t been able to sleep in the bed, I don’t want risk the scent leaving. I walked to the bathroom and pulled off my shirt, discarding it on the floor. I studied my reflection in the mirror, my dead eyes are encircled by large purple bags. My skin is pale and I’m looking a little thinner these days. Everything has been a struggle, not just sleeping but eating and training too.
I washed off quickly and towelled my body dry. After pulling on a pair of jeans and a black t-shirt, I walked to the edge of the bed. I picked up Zelena’s pillow and pressed my nose against it, inhaling deeply. Her scent filled my nose and sent tingles through my chest. I placed it back down carefully on the bed and wiped away the tear that had made its way down my cheek.
When I pulled up at the hospital carpark, I spotted a young couple walking to their car carrying a bundle in a small pink blanket. My heart tightened at seeing how happy and full of joy their faces were. A vision of Zelena smiling down at a little baby girl with bright blue eyes and raven black hair, popped into my mind. I smiled to myself picturing how unbearably beautiful our own children could be. I would be tightly wrapped around the finger of my baby girl, giving her everything she could ever want. Our son would be proud and strong and protective of his sister, a spitting image of myself. I rested my head against my hands and let out a sob. After a minute I wiped the tears away and straightened myself up, time to be strong.
I headed through the hospital doors and took the elevator to the fifth floor. I walked down the hallway to the door of the room. I took a deep breath before twisting the door handle.
“Gunner, baby” my mums voice cooed.
“Hi Mum” I answered her.
“You’re too thin my boy, have you eaten today?” she fussed, brushing my long hair off my face.
“I’m fine Mum” I told her, pushing her hands away.
“Hey Dad” I smiled walking to the side of the bed.
“How are you boy? Your mum’s right you look terrible” he grunted at me.
“Thanks Dad” I mumbled, bending over the bed.
“Hello, my little wolf” I whispered, placing a gentle kiss on Zelena’s cheek.
“Any news?” I asked standing up again.
“Nothing baby. Same as yesterday” Mum answered my question.
Zelena’s wound has completely healed, it healed in just eleven days, but she has remained in a coma since the night of the battle. No one can explain it. No one knows why she hasn’t woken up. I’m not giving up hope, I never will. There are hard days and easier days but I still visit her every day. I talk to her, telling her stories about our history and filling her in on what is going on in the pack.
Tobias comes by just as regularly. I didn’t like it at first and we had a few fights over it, my jealousy and protective nature got the best of me. I have come to accept that his feelings for her are strictly platonic, well at least they are now. He did admit that before he realised we are True Mates, he thought the Goddess may have sent him to her to become her Mate and not just her Guardian. But not anymore, luckily for him.
Dad stood up and gave me his chair by the bed. He was now sporting a scar down the side of his face from a knife wound. He took one hell of a beating during the battle, took out more than twenty hunters on his own after they cut him off from the other wolves. He was shot three times and had multiple stab wounds, but he still managed to rip those assholes to pieces, and come out of it alive.
“We’re just going down to the cafeteria for a coffee, do you want anything?” Mum asked as her and Dad headed for the door.
“No, thanks, I'm good” I answered.
I sat down and took Zelena’s hand in mine, gently stroking the back of her hand with my thumb. I blabbered on about Frendrick and his defiant nature, and his sister Freya’s crush on Smith. After a while I rested my head on Zelena’s hand and unintentionally drifted off to sleep.
-
Her body collapsed in my arms and her eyes glowed a bright yellow. “Kill that fuck” I shouted, but Tobias had already leaped on top of the crippled hunter, tearing his head from his body. “Zelena, Zelena, you’re okay. It'll be okay” I said to her, but my voice broke, and tears welled in my eyes. I pulled my hand out from her back and looked it over, her blood was dripping off my fingers. “Oh, Goddess no. Zee, it’s okay. You’re going to be okay” I pulled her tighter into my arms and I could feel her warm blood dripping onto my legs. “Someone get Artemis” I shouted. Pain coursed through my body. It was unbearable. I could feel my insides tearing itself apart. Zelena lifted her hand and shakily placed it on my cheek. A weak smile pulled at her lips as her glowing yellow eyes began to flicker. My chest tightened and I couldn’t suck in a breath. Her hand dropped from my cheek and her head tipped back. The glow of her eyes faded as her lids slowly closed. I threw my head back and howled an excruciating cry of sorrow.
-
I threw my body up off the bed gasping for air. I looked around me trying to get my bearings, I was still in the hospital room. I breathed out heavily and leaned over resting my hands on my knees. I took deep breaths attempting to steady my heart rate. Just another nightmare. The same one I have had every day for the last three months. As I listened to my heart rate slow another sound caught my attention. I stood up straight and scanned the room. My eyes fell on the bed, on my still Mate. As I raked them over her peaceful body, I halted at her face. I rubbed my eyes and stared at her dumbfounded. Two golden eyes stared back at me unblinking.
“Hi handsome” she smiled.
